Catalan Coast

This acrylic painting composition was inspired by a beautiful coastal footpath North of L’Amettla de Mar in Catalonia, about 90 miles South of Barcelona,Spain. Staying nearby last November I’ve tried to capture the beautiful glow of the sunlight in this autumnal Mediterranean scene. The air was fresh and chilly but so clear and seemed to intensify the light. The plant in the foreground was the most challenging part of this view with so many angles, shades and hues.

The first of two paintings featuring swans. After under-painting the swan I left the canvas flat which my cat found comfortable to spend the night on. Leaving two little paw indentations. Thinking the canvas was spoiled I restarted on another canvas before finding, days later, that the first one was OK after all. So I altered the background.

It’s occurred  to me that this would make a nice mural for a nursery or similar area.

I very nearly painted a picture without depicting any water but then I just has to go and add a few puddles, well…. it is the UK and if it’s not raining it usually just has I haven’t tried to illustrate any particular place that I can remember but I often walk over the downs in West Sussex and that is the obvious influence for me in this painting.

Sometimes the clouds are low and broken making the surrounding valleys appear veiled by mists. Roiling and tumbling and randomly revealing snippets of the hidden landscape as the overhead winds shred away the rising moisture. The sun just high enough to create a white-gold glow, fresh and clean.
