This teacher is encouraging the behavior hard. These kids have a funny new gag, and the teacher made it incredibly clear that it bothered them. This makes the kids love it even more, because you are the current authority, and kids are learning to test the boundaries and question the rules.

Why shouldn’t they flip a coin? It’s completely harmless, and a single assignment won’t matter.

If you want proper classroom management, you need to do one of two things in this situation:

Explain the NATURAL consequences of the action, not in an angry way, but a casual way. I.e, “Bro, if you get tails and skip the assignment, you’re going to have a disadvantage compared to everyone else. You really want to let a coin decide if you’ll have fun in my class?” This will work for some students, but not all; particularly, those students who are a bit better with intrinsic value of tasks.

Better yet, option two: JOIN THE BIT.

Charge a quarter per coin flip. Collect the quarters in a jar. Throw a party for it. (This would likely get admin on you, so watch it)

Flip a coin yourself — even better if it’s comically large — and if you get heads, you win because the coin is bigger.

Install a Plinko machine. “Put your quarters to better use.” Have classroom rewards offered as prizes.

I'm typically not one for prints, but I've decided to bite the bullet and set up an alternative to RedBubble, since that has been slowly going under thanks to their weird policies about artist cuts.
