I am so fucking torn between wanting Lupe/Jess to be a thing and wanting them to stay platonic buddies
Like at first I strictly rooted for them to remain friends, cause itβs so refreshing to have two lesbians just being best buds and nothing romantic between them, and they are literally the definition of chaotic bros
But then this scene happened and it was pretty fucking fruity.Β

Plus it would be so cool to have a butch/butch relationship which has practically never, to my knowledge, been protrayed in media. Yet I kinda also love them as femme-crazy platonic bros being wingman to each other in gay bars. Like IΒ can just see Jess trying to impress some girl with some wilderness shit about taming wild boars and Lupe being like ok tell us about every single wild boar youβve tamed
~To ship or not to ship, that is the question~
I think pairing them romantically in the second season would actually be a bit of a disservice. Itβs rare that we get to see such close intimacy in a platonic friendship. That level of vulnerability absolutely exists in the real world, and itβs even more special in butchXbutch friendships. Theyβre constantly wearing a mask all day out in the world, constantly having to prove themselves to society, or even themselves, but at the end of the day, they get to find solace in their closest relationships because they all truly understand each other because they share similar experiences IN the world, and similar experiences FROM the world. They get to take off the masks and the armor and relish in the comfort of being safe with their people. They donβt have to hide, or face ridicule or judgment; they get to just BE and exist and belong and BE LOVED as they are, and thatβs fantastically special. Found family is a treasure, and we should be able to honor that without putting pressure on romanticizing deep connections.
Iβm not opposed to Lupe and Jess being romantically involved, but I think it should wait awhile and be a true slow burn. To romantically pair them so soon just feels like a quick out for their story line. Itβs too easy to just slap them together and call it a day, and a relationship like theirs is so much more layered than that. Their intricacies and vulnerabilities and experiences, independently, and together as best friends, should really be explored first. We donβt get to see a lot of that on screen, or even in real life, and I think it would be a HUGE missed opportunity to see the depths of their layers by just relegating them to being lovers. They have the type of friendship that can, and will, last a lifetime, and thatβs something to absolutely be treasured for everything that it is. They donβt need the pressure of being romantic to further their storyline or character development at all. It may even be counterproductive in some ways
