Intro to Arlo Avery: 21, Pureblood, Photographer, Slytherin. The child of Alaric Avery and Elizabeth Avery nÊe Fawley. Submissive, anxious, over sensitive, dependant, reserved, compassionate, observant, patient, encouraging, pacifistic. Reluctantly aligned with the Death Eaters.
Trigger Warnings: Abuse, Bullying, Violence
Arloâs childhood was not a happy one. He lived under strict rules, being tutored in French, piano and basic etiquette from the moment he began talking in sentences.
When he first arrived at Hogwarts he was scared and unnerved by what might happen if he somehow didnât meet his fatherâs expectation.
The Sorting Hat, after a moment of deliberating, told him he was a Hufflepuff. Arlo silently begged the Hat to put him in Slytherin and eventually it decided he could be comfortable there.
Upon hearing the word âSlytherinâ echo throughout the hall, the adrenaline drained from his body and he fainted.
Having received word of his sonâs most recent humiliation, Arloâs father sent him a letter the following week, telling him Nate had been instructed to befriend him, and teach him how to be less of a disappointment. Â
Arlo quickly found that he didnât fit in with his Slytherin housemates. He was teased frequently for the sorting ceremony. Students began to single him out for his apparent weakness, bullying him without remorse.
Arlo began to establish a hesitant friendship with Nate. Nate taught him how to easily parrot his fatherâs views whenever the topic of blood purity arose, and the skill proved a reliable defence mechanism. He became less of an easy target, no longer worth the effort of tormenting.
When they were in their fifth year, Arlo and Nate began to realise their friendship might be developing into something new. Seeing nothing to lose, especially considering their friendship was public knowledge, they started to date.
Nate and Arloâs friendship is still very much encouraged by both the Carrows, and the Averys, despite the two no longer being at school, which makes conducting their relationship while keeping it hidden incredibly easy.
Though Arlo is terrified by the state of the world. Living at home with his parents he is consistently being berated for his lack of confidence, his nerves, his inability to intimidate, and obvious lack of pride for his 'unsulliedâ lineage.Â
He has reverted again to the quiet, shy, and awkward Arlo who was bullied and victimised at school. He does everything within his power to stay silent and unseen while inside the Avery Manor.Â
During his time at school, Arlo began to practise photography. It was a welcome distraction from his world. He has demonstrated a fair amount of skill over the years. His parents are allowing the hobby because they believe art to be a sophisticated pastime.Â
Saving any money he manages to acquire in a hidden, charmed box beneath his bed, he knows he is at risk of being dragged further and further into the darkness his family seems to revel in. He knows if that ever happens it is incredibly unlikely he will survive to see the end of the war. He is too weak, he isnât loyal to the cause like he should be. And so he has devised a clumsy escape plan. Should he need to disappear, he has enough to fund himself for a handful of months.Â
