Netsuke of a stylized fukura susume ("fat sparrow"). Made of ivory. Mid 1700s, Edo Period, Japan
Sparrows (susume) represent prosperity and abundance. The fat sparrow represents to have your prosperity grow and expand. It became a common symbol of the late Edo period.
This piece was carved by Masanao In Kyoto, Japan. Currently housed in the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland.
