Hydrogel removes toxins better than current alternatives
A 3D printed hydrogel structure can absorb metal pollutants in water significantly faster than solid alternatives.
Clean and fresh water is essential for human life, and water is a necessity to agricultural and other industries. However, global population growth and pollution from industrial waste has put a strain in local fresh water resources.
A hydrogel is made up of polymer chains that are hydrophilic (attracted to water) and are known for being highly absorbent.
Current clean-up costs can be extremely expensive, leaving poorer and more remote populations at risk to exposure of metal pollutants such as lead, mercury, cadmium and copper, which can lead to severe effects on the neurological, reproductive and immune systems.
Now, a group of scientists at the University of Texas at Dallas, US, have developed a 3D printable hydrogel that is capable of 95% metal removal within 30 minutes.
Clean water is also needed for oneâs hygiene, including brushing your teeth and bathing.
The hydrogel is made from a cheap, abundant biopolymer chitosan and diacrylated pluronic, which forms cDAP. The cDAP mixture is then loaded into the printer as a liquid and allowed to cool to <4â°C, before rising again to room temperature to form a gel that can be used to produce various 3D printed shapes.
The Dallas team also tested the reusability of their hydrogel and found that it had a recovery rate of 98% after five cycles of use, proving it to be a potentially reliable resource to communities with limited fresh water supply.

âThis novel and cost-effective approach to remove health and environmental hazards could be useful for fabricating cheap and safe water filtration devices on site in polluted areas without the need for industrial scale manufacturing tools,â the paper reads.

That fuckin smile at the end
To the worried person in the comments:Â
No, a hummingbirdâs heart will not stop if it stops moving. Youâre possibly thinking of Spoink, which is a Pokemon that supposedly powers its heart by bouncing, and as such canât stop moving. Hummingbirds donât sit often because theyâre busy looking for food, but they can and do sit. The females sit on eggs in nests, after all, and they do have to sleep.Â
Fun fact: the leg muscles of a hummingbird are so stripped down to save on weight that they cannot walk. They can step sideways along a branch or other perch, but they cannot go forward without taking flight.
However they absolutely do stop moving. In fact, hummingbirds hibernate! Overnight. Instead of sleeping. Because if they tried to sleep like a normal animal their hyperactive metabolism would mean that they starve to death before breakfast.
Unrelated fun fact: the primary Aztec god of war would take on the form of a hummingbird, and the souls of the bravest warriors were said to turn into hummingbirds in order to join him after death, presumably because every hummingbird is approximately four grams of pure concentrated asskicking which fears no man nor beast and will gladly throw down with somebody seventeen thousand times their size if offended.
this is a really cool post and i love seeing such a small bird but reading âNo, a hummingbirdâs heart will not stop if it stops moving. Youâre possibly thinking of Spoinkâ killed meÂ

This is an incredible breakdown of how MBD alters bone structure! Anatomikaâs reptile information is so fantastic.
The skull comparison really does a good job of illustrating what MBD does to the skeleton.
MBD can also result in weird lumpiness on skeletal structures (I think you can even see this in the bumps on the MBD chameleon skull), which I believe is mostly due to the body creating fibrous deposits around the bone in an attempt to strengthen it without using calcium. So if you feel weird lumps on your reptileâs skeleton (or if your turtle/tortoise has an abnormally lumpy shell) that can also be a sign of MBD.
