Yoichi Nagumo x Ex–Port Mafia Reader

Nagumo didn’t believe in coincidences. So when he saw you again, sitting in a dim bar like nothing in the world could touch you, he didn’t call it fate. He called it bad timing. You were nursing a drink you weren’t really drinking.

Same posture. Same calm stare. Same quiet pressure in the air that used to make Port Mafia members step aside without realizing why. Ex–Port Mafia. That part followed you like smoke that refused to disappear.

Nagumo leaned against the counter beside you like he belonged there.

“You picked a terrible place to hide,” he said casually.

You didn’t look at him.

“I’m not hiding.”

“Sure,” he hummed. “And I’m just here for the atmosphere.”

That got a faint shift in your expression. Not surprise. Recognition.

“You always talk too much,” you said.

“And you always look like you’re about to stab someone,” he replied.

A pause. Then, finally, you glanced at him.

“…You shouldn’t be here, Nagumo.”

“I get that a lot,” he said lightly.

The bartender chose that exact moment to leave. Smart man. Silence settled between you. Heavy, familiar, unfinished. You turned your glass slowly.

“I heard the rumors,” Nagumo said after a moment.

“That I left?”

“That you disappeared.”

A faint smile tugged at your mouth.

“Same thing.”

Nagumo studied you. Not like prey. Not like target. Like someone trying to solve a puzzle they didn’t remember starting.

“You look… fine,” he said.

“I am fine.”

“That’s usually what people say when they aren’t.”

Your eyes narrowed slightly.

“You didn’t come here for concern.”

“No,” he admitted. “I came because I don’t like loose ends.”

That made you exhale softly through your nose.

“Still the same.”

“Still you,” he corrected.

For a while, neither of you spoke. Outside the window, rain slid down neon-lit glass. Inside, the world felt suspended. Then you spoke quietly.

“Port Mafia doesn’t have loose ends. It has dead ones.”

Nagumo’s gaze sharpened slightly.

“You’re not dead.”

“No,” you agreed.

A pause.

“…Unfortunately.”

That got a low chuckle out of him. He slid into the seat next to you. Uninvited. You didn’t stop him. That said more than either of you liked.

“So,” he said, “what are you now?”

You finally looked at him properly. No hesitation. No softness. Just honesty.

“Free.”

Nagumo tilted his head.

“That’s a dangerous answer.”

“So was working for them.”

A beat. Then quieter.

“Was it worth it?”

That question lingered. Longer than expected. You looked away first.

“…I survived.”

Nagumo didn’t push further. That was new too. A distant siren wailed outside. You didn’t react. Nagumo did.

“Trouble?” he asked.

“Always,” you said.

He sighed.

“Of course it follows you.”

You glanced at him.

“You’re still here too.”

“Yeah,” he said simply. “Looks like it follows me as well.”

When the glass in front of you finally emptied, you stood. Nagumo didn’t stop you. But he did speak.

“Are you going to disappear again?”

You paused. Just for a second. Then glanced back over your shoulder.

“…Depends who’s asking.”

A faint smirk.

“That answer is so you it’s annoying.”

You hummed softly.

“Then don’t ask questions you already know the answer to.”

You turned to leave. But Nagumo’s voice stopped you one last time.

“This isn’t the Port Mafia anymore.”

You looked back. Rainlight flickering across your face.

“I know.”

A pause. Then softer than before.

“…That’s why I stayed this time.”

And just like that, you were gone into the rain. Nagumo watched you disappear into the neon night. Then sighed under his breath.

“Yeah,” he muttered.

“Still trouble.”

Two things since the previous chapter dropped for Sakamoto Days!

1 I hope someone finds Shin! I hope he’s good. I don’t want him to just be passed out in a random alley for too long! Despite the civilians in this story being mostly npc’s, there’s still other people around and I don’t want shin to get hurt. Hopefully we see him again soon!

2 with the prediction of Sakamoto Taro’s death, I think there’s truly two options that Yuto Suzuki is planning.

One option is that Kei Uzuki/Slur develops a Sakamoto Taro personality and someone kills him while in that personality, and effectively, the real Sakamoto cannot save Uzuki, making it tragic that he couldn’t keep his promise to Kashima.

The other option is Nagumo turns into Taro and is killed while dressed/disguised as Sakamoto Taro. Nagumo is known for being disorienting, and that’s a strength of his, so it could become his fatal flaw as well in the end. This would also be incredibly tragic because Nagumo is a favourite character of many and is best friends with Sakamoto.

It would also be tragic cuz there aren’t a terrible amount of major deaths in the Sakamoto fandom (some include: Haruma, Rion Akao (which was not a major major death cuz we’ve known she’s dead for while but a major factor in the story), Takamura, Hyo, Gozu, Carolina Reaper, and Tasuka Ando). There are a good amount of minor characters’ deaths (Oki, Laser Yamamoto, Sei Asaki, Shinto Yotsomura, minimalist, dump, saw, Sochi Amo, Uda, Kobayashi, and Higuchi), but something really popular with Yuto Suzuki’s plots are that those you think are dead aren’t really (cough gaku cough cough).

Don’t read unless you’ve seen!! I’ve been thinking and digesting this last chapter.

The main theme of Sakamoto Days has been that everyone deserves a second chance and therefore no one ever deserves to be killed, especially because we don’t know what their own life is like. Who says we get to take it away?

Nagumo and Uzuki bring up the fact that Uzuki has killed and will continue to do so. So unless you completely capture and make it unable for him to escape before he repents, he will repeat the killing and repeat the power. Obviously Uzuki is hurting and he deserves the chance to be good, have retribution, and choose to apologize. He deserves the chance to rectify for putting a bounty on Sakamoto, for killing many, and for putting multiple kids & families in danger.

Nagumo, on the opposing side, brings the same question that JJK has as well: what happens when someone you save goes on to kill a person or being?

We don’t know much about Nagumo’s family or history. We know he’s from an elite and infamous family of spies. And we know he’s transferred from the spy department to assassins department in the JCC. As of the switch, his only known family left was Rion Akao and Taro Sakamoto. One who is dead and the other is almost dead (I don’t think he’s dead yet). That’s his only family. And the guy who has killed both (nearly), is planning on killing more.

Nagumo has always been morally teetering, but he has always respected Taro (despite his teasing), he’s always supported him. He’s now in a moral conflict that I think was well thought out (development wise), because he trained with Sakamoto because he betrayed the new JAA for him. But he’s also never had to (after officially joining the Sakamoto allies) be told, “our rule is no killing” despite already knowing the existence of the rule. Sakamoto never told Shishiba “no killing”. But Nagumo is his friend.

So new potential theory: Nagumo accidentally kills Sakamoto when Sakamoto’s last bit of energy goes into stopping Nagumo from giving the final blow on Uzuki. Nagumo = devastated. Uzuki sees Sakamoto’s death and internalizes it, becoming the new Sakamoto to live on taro’s dream of the new jaa with a chain convenience store front. Everyone’s going to end up alright besides Nagumo of course. Because Nagumo just killed his last friend in the og trio.
