Here are the things Percival does care about:

When Siegfried returns to Feendrache, there are two new scars on his back. They’re thin, but deep, etched freshly near his shoulder-blades, and Percival thinks to chastise him for letting some nobody catch him unawares. It hurts, he can tell, and hasn’t been cleaned properly - Siegfried’s shoulders sag around the cuts, and the beige of his undershirt is stained uneven with rust. He presses his lips shut, and slaps ointment on the wounds with force.

They share a meal at Siegfried’s favorite tavern. It’s Percival’s treat, because Percival was feeling magnanimous (- because Siegfried hadn’t a rupie on his person, said he was robbed clean when he was trudging through the Feendrache mountain pass; it was clearly a lie, what kind of lunatic robs a man with a greatsword, but Siegfried looked like he hadn’t had a proper meal for days, and Percival was tired of his excuses.) He engages in conversation, chatting about this and that, but Siegfried barely listens, his eyes flitting every time chatter pops up from the neighboring tables about bandits in the forest fringes, beast infestations in the hills close to town. He “uhn”s and “ahh”s at the wrong parts of Percival’s sentences. Siegfried would excuse himself and leave, Percival thinks, without the warning of baleful red eyes. (Next time, they are going to Percival’s favorite restaurant, where there won’t be peasants’ chatter, and Siegfried will finally eat.)
