Dabao Primary School and Community Cultural Centre in Guangxi

Dabao village is remotely situated within the mountain range of Guangxi province in China. The settlement provides home to around 110 families of an ethnic minority group called the ‘Yaos’. The group has its own distinctive dialect and culture. Yao people are often identified by their unique colourful traditional costumes.

The design concept is structured around the use of layers of walls in addressing the challenges originated from the steep topography of the site. A long bamboo façade along the southern site boundary not only acts as a protective barrier from the road outside, it also regulates the transmission of noise and daylight whilst ensuring privacy of occupants at the same time. The intelligent use of different diameters and lengths of bamboo tubes responds adequately to the different light requirements of the rooms for their respective functions.

Orphans of Time Rebecca Bathory

A fashion photographer turned urban explorer has swapped modelling shoots for the allure of abandoned buildings. Rebecca Lillith Bathory, from London, travels around the world documenting haunting spaces such as derelict hospitals, schools and villas. The fine art photographer has been capturing abandoned locations since 2012 and her work has been a big hit on social media, attracting nearly 100,000 dedicated followers across her accounts. But despite the beauty of her images, she refuses to disclose the exact locations of her photographs in order to protect the space for other explorers and avoid tipping off security.

Sverre Fehn’s Hedmark Museum Hélène Binet

The Hedmark Museum, also known as the Storhamar Barn, is one of Fehn’s best known works and unique in Norwegian post-war architecture. The design of various parts of the new museum building and the exhibitions followed Sverre Fehn through long periods of his career. It started in 1967, when the archaeological excavations were completed. The then director of the museum, Per Martin Tvengsberg, had been a student of Fehn at the Oslo School of Architecture, and Fehn was commissioned to do an initial design.

The works on site started in 1969, the barn was finished in 1971 and the south wing with the auditorium in 1973. The exhibitions were completed under the new director Ragnar Pedersen, and were completed in 1980. The pavilions in the castle courtyard were completed in 2005.
