Asra: I saw you ~

I love Portia from The Arcana as a character, she’s this bright happy ball of sunshine, but she’s only ever had one look. So when they released a “pirate” look for her at the beginning of this year, I knew I had to do it. I didn’t have a convention in mind to wear it at until a group of my friends who all cosplay from the same game converged there on the same day, and it happened to be a year since I’d made my first original Portia costume for the same con. So, I set out to finish the project and surprise them there.

I constructed 90% of the costume myself, only purchasing the tassel, wig, and shoes. Everything else was self-patterned, hand-painted or custom dyed, and given little extras for ease of wear. I like playing with texture and color on simpler designs like this; I’m very proud of the two tone dupioni in the purple vest. The most difficult piece to make, ironically, seems deceptively simple— I had to remade the gold button skirt three times. There’s still more I’d love to add or fix on her to get her even better and closer to the art.

Cosplay is the thing that got me where I am today. I wouldn’t have my job without cosplay. I wouldn’t have self confidence or self love without cosplay. I owe a lot of friendships and bonds to the hobby. It’s given me opportunities I didn’t think I’d have. Honestly, even when I’ve thought about giving it up, the idea of bringing something to life and being a part of a bigger, more welcoming community inspires me.
