Okay, time for some lighthearted ranting.
Can we talk about the fact that God put the fate of the universe in the hands of two of the most emotionally compromised people on the planet?
Crowley is broken and depressed and Aziraphale has just been brutally roasted to death by God.
Yeah. They are not of sound mind.
These are also the beings who spent thousands of years doing everything possible to avoid doing their jobs because they’d rather get lunch. Aziraphale literally popped over to France during the Revolution because he wanted crêpes, for fuck’s sake.
And then they lost the Antichrist and spent eleven years raising the wrong child.
Trust them to make a decision beyond wine pairing? No thanks.
This isn’t really a bash on them. Quite the opposite.
They were never meant to be heroes. They were two immortals who loved books, music, tea, vintage cars, and getting mildly drunk while arguing about a bird in a spaceship sharpening its beak on a cosmic mountain at the edge of creation. They liked ducks. They liked Jane Austen. They liked Earth.
That’s what made them special.
It’s about Aziraphale hosting an entire ball for Crowley. Come on. That was never for Maggie and Nina, whether he wants to admit it or not.
And let’s not forget that the world was already saved once, not by angels, demons, or divine plans, but by a child.
Adam didn’t save the world because he was powerful. He saved it because he loved it. He loved his friends, his dog, his hometown, and the life he had built for himself. In the end, that mattered more than Heaven’s plans or Hell’s ambitions.
For me, the biggest mistake was pushing Aziraphale and Crowley into the role of heroic martyrs and cosmic sacrificial lambs. That archetype works beautifully in plenty of stories, but Good Omens was never really about noble self-sacrifice.
It was about ordinary love and ordinary choices winning over grand designs. About choosing the world because it’s worth living in.
It’s about two celestial idiots who kept trying to save the world almost by accident because they loved being part of it.
Maybe that’s why I keep thinking about this quote:
“Some believe it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. It is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love.” Gandalf
That has always felt closer to the heart of Good Omens than any grand sacrifice.
The world was saved by Adam because he loved it.
And Crowley and Aziraphale spent six thousand years proving exactly why it was worth loving.
This was meant to be funny, but somehow got away from me. But those are my thoughts of the day.
does anybody remember the s1 exchange between aziraphale and crowley where crowley was like what do you mean god is going to drown everyone even kids you can’t kill kids and then aziraphale was like it’s ok god is going to create a rainbow at the end :))))) and then the gomens finale is like god kills everyone but it’s ok bc there’s 1 gay couple at the end :)))))) anyway,

Tl;dr how you can personally make Neil Gaiman lose money (and not be a jerk to others.)
I see a lot of folks upset that NG will financially benefit from residuals and other compensation surrounding his involvement in the adaptation of Sandman and Good Omens (and he will.) But the answer isn’t “rage at the fans who are so emotionally attached to their blorbos because they grieve differently, and then somehow NG will be financially punished.” That’s lower-class/middle-class thinking. NG is too rich and financially diversified to really be hurt by little boycott or a couple of show cancellations (though said cancellations can cause life-changing poverty to the little guys who signed contracts and turned down other opportunities before all of this came out. Boy does NG love women in poverty 🤮)
So if you want to substantially reduce the wealth of someone at NG’s financial level—you need to do it with professional services fees.
Details below the cut:
why not :^)
They wrote their own story.
✨️some thoughts under the cut, feel free to ignore it and just enjoy the picture✨️
✨the arrangement✨
I did a thing I guess

also, I really don't know how to phrase this but to me the finale misses the joke, you know?
it forgets that the christian cosmology was the setting, told through corporate satire, not the villain. even God wasn’t an active tyrant; she was an absent CEO, leaving individual contributors like Aziraphale and Crowley to realize their job descriptions were irrelevant to the company's bottom line anyway, so they coasted by on minimum effort
that corporate satire was what allowed this to be a comedy, a space to tell a beautiful story about choices, humanity, and love. the finale for some reason treats that background seriously, it turns that setting into an omnipotent, dystopian threat, which completely suffocates both the romance and the humor by replacing a petty system you can outwit, outsmart, outmanouver with a bleak, unearned nightmare where "the company controls your every breath, and you can never clock out"
you know what fucking kills me? all major historical events that happened in our universe (the supposed new universe) also happened in the original universe.
we know that covid happened because the lockdowns were the reason Maggie was behind on rent (+ the whole lockdown audio bit, if you want to treat that as canon). the French Revolution, WW2, the Spanish Inquisition, climate change all happened. Shakespeare, Queen, the Velvet Underground, Shostakovich and David Bowie happened. hell, even on a much smaller-stakes scale, our version of the M25 still looks like Crowley's version.
the universe still worked out the same exact way. what was the point of their sacrifice then? no more cosmic meddling? we've ended up with the same exact thing anyway, so either Heaven and Hell were never that important because it's all humanity's doing (oh hello Book Omens/S1) , or the universe is just so inert that the whole "once you get rid of God you gain free will" thing is just blatantly Not True
"but humanity is now free to exist without the influences from Heaven or Hell!!!" yeah and everything still worked out the same way so ultimately Heaven and Hell never had much of a hand in anything
"but humanity being in control is very Pratchett!!!" yes, but killing the whole universe just to prove that point isn't. the death of 8 billion people was just a device to prove that humanity is capable of both beauty and horror? "sin, young man, is when you treat people like things."
I dunno man, this ending is fucking bleak
afaik the point is that this humanity doesn't die after 6000 years, it will live, as long as it can. GO!humanity can't.
SO WHY DON'T YOU ASK IT FOR OLD HUMANS?
All they needed is just reset of the old universe and rescheduling of Armageddon to hear death or whatever it could be.
Or bring everyone back but nerf the angels & demons so they can't cause mass destruction. Or any of a zillion other endings, many of which are already on ao3.
But "treating people like things" hits to the core of the matter, I think. All the beloved characters, even the forgettable background masses, they were all downgraded to play*things* of God and genocided out of existence. And then God took them back out of the box (minus all memories) and made a new universe with almost the same setting, but now they play out contrived human lives where all the characters we know show up in the same bar at the same time.
I've only gotten more disdainful of the writing over time.
World broken, heart broken. I could write essays but I prefer drawing
Oh for somebody' sake just please show people that you at least watched other seasons
'i want free will to be a real thing.'
yeah well I want continuity to be a real thing but I guess that's too much to ask.

This is exactly what I wanted to see in the finale. The film was completely devoid of any emotion. They deserved at least an embrace. A desperate, long-awaited one, full of love, the desire to protect, and to love forever… Perhaps with tears, but tears of relief, as well as the longing from a long separation...
Hope this helps
