My thoughts after freshly finishing TVA (my boy Armand was done dirty 💔)
I could write a whole long rant about my favorite parts of the book, and the whole story as a whole. I just have a lot to say, and none of my irl friends would know what I'm talking about so I'm just gonna yap here.
The ending of TVA was lackluster, in general, and compared to the other Vampire Chronicles books. Like, WHAT DO YOU MEAN Lestat just wakes up and asks Sybelle to play the Appassionata-- isn't that Armand's favorite piece? Crucify me if I'm misremembering. What connection does Lestat have to Sybelle or the music that she plays? He was in the chapel with her ONCE, and he didn't even interact with her, his focus was on Armand, who was drinking from him-- ONE WOULD THINK.
So much of the ending (and the book in general tbh) just sounded like Anne Rice talking. I love hearing the author's voice in their writing, but so much of the metaphysical parts of the story were just "Jesus Jesus Jesus, Lord Lord, Christ, THE FRICKIN VEIL AGAIN." I understand that much of Armand's character revolves around his convoluted beliefs, but as I said, it just sounds like Anne Rice talking to herself about religion, rather than Armand talking to the other vampires.
One part I enjoyed about the ending, against my own judgment, was Marius asking why Armand could still believe in Christ after all the horrible things that happen to innocent people, especially the things that happen in His name! Marius was asking the real questions. But then of course, any question about flaws in religion is brushed away because Christ seems to always be the answer in these books now. This is coming from someone who is very obsessed with religion. I find it fascinating. But I was getting overwhelmed with all the God talk.
Again, I couldn't enjoy the ending like I enjoyed the rest of the book because all of the characters just felt like one person with different masks. They weren't very individualized. I only liked Marius the most in the ending because he felt so different from everyone!!
In a few days I'll either learn to appreciate the ending, or I'll despise it tenfold.
I love Armand though, at least how he is through my eyes.
