He’s waving goodbye to the young family; done with the day’s lessons. Hugs them all and the youngest child pecks him on the cheek, receiving a ruffle on head in return. In the distance, he sees a minute figure heading his way and when it presents itself in the form of a young woman, eager for lessons, the first thing Archie does is grin.

“Yes, that’s right,” Marin answered the man’s question, trying not to appear as nervous as she felt. Another lie–the grunt couldn’t understand exactly why she was lying; there was a small thought in the corner of her mind that feared he would turn her away when he discovered her true motives. “My name is Marin.”
The brunette’s eyes widened in awe as the Sharpedo breached the calm surface of the water, chomping down on a treat at the height of a graceful arc before disappearing back under the waves. The sight seemed to snap some sense into her as she shook her head, a bit disappointed in herself.
“Actually – I’m sorry. I’m not here for scuba lessons. I don’t know why I lied.” Marin finally confessed, lowering her gaze with a sigh. She stared at her shoes for a moment before tentatively looking up again. “To be honest, I can’t even swim very well. The reason I came here is, um--”
She paused for a few beats, unsure of how to proceed. Her heart was beating so hard that she could feel her pulse in her throat. “I was a member of Team Aqua. I, um, I guess I came to see how our old leader is holding up.” Marin smiled sheepishly. “You seem happy. I hope life is treating you well.”

angling his brow, daiki notes marin’s enthusiasm, how she doesn’t ask questions. a smirk teases his lips, but then contorts sourly into a downward, judgmental curve. daiki’s eyes follow marin’s careful motions, watching her pick up the dead cigarette butt from the ash-littered and oil-stained cement. her appeal to this environment, he assumes, seems misplaced. but, they are strangers after all. she also seems jaded from his mannerisms—his sharp tone and overall roughness. still, he pulls out a thin cloth from his jumpsuit pocket, ready to offer it when she says—
“ sorry, mr. dax! or should i call you, boss ? ”

“Just. Dax.”
His biting tone was accompanied by a soft gesture. The conflicting nature of the two expressions were not lost on Marin, who silently reached out to take the cloth that he offered. Her eyes examined his sharp features for a moment before she averted her gaze to pay attention to where she was walking. There was more to Dax than he appeared on the surface. She certainly wasn’t convinced that he was as frigid as he was letting on.
Marin didn’t seem to mind the silence that lingered between them as they walked. She fell into step beside Dax, making sure to keep up with him -- she had a feeling he wouldn’t take too kindly to her slowing them down. When they reached the magnet train station, his question caught her off guard. Team Aqua tended to leave a sour taste in peoples’ mouths, these days. She pursed her lips as she considered the best way to answer without telling and outright lie.
“The organization I worked for no longer exists.” She stated simply, hoping it wouldn’t raise any concerns. “I was a shipyard mechanic -- mostly, I performed routine maintenance, but I also sometimes assisted with repair work."
The train screeched to a stop in front of them and she followed Dax onto one of the cars; when he chose a seat she sat down right beside him without a second thought.
“These days I accept freelance jobs at the harbor in Slateport City, Hoenn. It’s a busy port, so there’s always plenty of work.” She looked down at the cloth that Dax had given her, now covered with dirty fingerprints from the oil that she had unwittingly picked up from the garage floor. She folded it neatly into a small square and placed it in her lap before attempting to change the subject. “So, what kinds of errands are we running today?”
She looked up to meet his gaze. She didn’t want to pry, but she was curious what kinds of ‘errands’ Dax had on his mind that might result in them having to execute his third rule.

daiki’s had his fair share of strangers, but none have come across as innocent as marin. and he doesn’t mean it in a nice way. like glass, he can see right through feigned innocence, but marin’s naivety is a brick wall. what’s her deal? daiki blinks, searching her for any sleight of hand tricks, or familiar body language—any reason to slam the door without, once again, being the bad guy. he comes up short on his inspection, and it puts him further on edge.

It was all Marin could do to keep the smile on her face as she was assaulted with the bitterness of the stranger’s tone. If she was nervous before she was downright anxious at this point.
"I know a little more than ‘jack shit,’” she attempted apprehensively, shifting her gaze to her shoes just as they’re peppered with a sprinkling of cigarette ash. She simply taps her toes on the pavement to shake it off before continuing. “I’m a marine mechanic, but Goldenrod doesn’t have a port -- well, I mean, it can’t be that different, right? Machines are machines...”
Her voice trailed off as she wondered if it would even be worth it to continue. She was nearly ready to apologize for disturbing him and turn tail when the door shut in her face. The muffled sound of the chain lock being undone indicated that the door would reopen promptly, so in preparation the grunt took another step back, but nothing could have braced her for the sight that was revealed from behind the door.
A giant! she thought quietly as she blinked up at him, a titan towering over her with a cold look in his eyes. Nodding attentively, she took his three rules to heart, her smile returning as she realized that he had actually decided to hire her. Dax, she repeated in her mind, committing the name to memory as she pondered his words. He seemed more than just a little paranoid, if she was being honest, but she didn’t even think about questioning his motives. After all the trouble she had gone through just to find someone to give her a chance, she couldn’t afford to be picky.
“Got it!” Marin signaled her understanding with a nod, just before the tall male pushed past her, causing her to stumble backwards slightly as his smoldering cigarette butt falls to the ground.
The brunette looked down at it with a sigh. What were the odds that the wind would blow it out of the small garage, into a gutter, where it would eventually end up in the ocean? The answer: highly likely. Stooping down, she quickly sweeps up the discarded butt between her fingers, tossing it into a nearby trash bin as she followed her new employer . She falls into step beside him, nearly having to jog to keep up with his long strides.
"Dax,” she began tentatively, looking up at him with her amber eyes. Now that they were walking beside one another the difference in their height was painfully obvious. “Thank you. I promise not to let you down.”
“Sorry! Mr. Dax! Or should I call you Boss?” she panicked suddenly, quickly attempting to correct herself as she realized the formal tone she had taken with him. Since their relationship so far was strictly professional, she wasn’t sure how he wished to be addressed. The last thing she wanted to do was disrespect her boss only minutes into the job!

On the track of some of her old friends who had scattered after the dissolving of Team Aqua, Marin found herself in unfamiliar territory once the trail had gone cold. In the middle of the largest city of a region she had never been to, the ex-grunt had run low on money and was feeling even more alone than before.
Without enough funds to even travel home, she had no choice but to look for work. Unfortunately, in Goldenrod, she found herself encountering a problem that she had not yet experienced in Slateport. The person she spoke to at each garage she visited that day had given her odd looks when she requested work; one man even laughed, apparently under the impression that Marin was playing some kind of prank. It seemed that female mechanics were not a common sight in the area, let alone small and skinny ones like herself.
Marin, however, was not one to give up without a fight. So, she continued her hunt for work, moving from one automotive shop to the next. When she found herself at a quaint shop on the outskirts of the city, the brunette silently hoped that her luck would soon take a turn.
“Hello?” she called, stepping into the empty shop. To her surprise, there was no one there. She made her way to the door in the back of the shop, careful not to disturb any of the vehicles or equipment present inside the garage. She raised her hand and knocked tentatively. There was no audible movement on the other side of the door, and after a few moments it seemed like no one was going to answer. Marin was about to turn around and move on to the next garage when the door suddenly jerked open just enough to reveal a single, suspicious eye.
“Oh! Um--” the girl took a step back as thin tendrils of smoke began escape through the gap along with the disgruntled sound of a man’s voice. She gulped, shifting her weight nervously from one foot to the other. “My name is Marin,” she began, trying her best to be polite despite the circumstances. “I’m looking for work... I have mechanical experience -- not with automotives, but I’m a quick learner.”
She paused, realizing she hadn’t exactly presented herself in the best way possible. “I’d even be willing to, um... tidy up the shop, or organize your tools, or... Just any sort of job you need done. I just really need the money.”
Since her arrival in Castelia City, Marin had the faintest feeling of being watched. Her ship was one of the last of the night to port, and the sun had already begun to set as she started toward her destination. Luckily for her, it wasn’t a long walk from the docks, and she arrived before the night grew too long.
The elderly couple who had taken such good care of her for a short time when she was young, the Robinsons, had agreed to reconnect with her. Marin was happy to have the chance to properly thank them for the kindness she had shown her, and to let them know how much she still thought of them, even after so many years. Her old foster parents had been thrilled to see her, but after a short time Marin had decided to excuse herself with a promise to return in the morning; she did not want to impose on the kind couple too much.
Once she left, rather than try to find lodging for the night the young brunette found herself drawn back to the docks -- to the very last spot in Castelia City she had stood before she had taken her leap of faith, years ago. But, again, that odd feeling of being watched loomed over her, and she found herself checking over her shoulder once or twice as she walked, enjoying the sounds of the ocean.
Finally, a noise behind her confirmed her suspicion. Marin whirled around and assumed a defensive position, although someone of her size would have a hard time looking imposing in any situation.
“Hey, I know you’re there!” Marin shouted, trying her best to sound threatening despite the slight tremble in her voice. “If you’re gonna mug me I wish you’d hurry up and get it over with, so I can enjoy my walk in peace. I’ll let you know now, though, I don’t have anything valuable on me!”
Pulling her coat tighter around her body, she waited for the miscreant to show themselves. What manner of lowlife should she expect to be stalking a young girl through an abandoned, dimly-lit part of town? She shuddered at the thought.
The bay off of the coast of Lilycove City was stunning from any angle, but Marin realized that it was difficult to truly appreciate it’s beauty unless you were floating directly on it’s surface, far away from the shore. The brunette leaned over the railing of the ferry boat, her hair swaying in the breeze as her brown eyes took in every detail of the crystal-clear waters below. A school of Luvdisc passed below the boat, and she even spotted a Seel swimming whimsically through the waves.
“All ashore!” The captain called from behind his steering wheel as he docked the ferry on an island in the cove, giving his single passenger a nod and a small smile. Marin thanked him with a smile of her own before disembarking from the boat.
Her feet touched solid land once again, but felt more unsteady than when she had been standing on the boat. As she approached the the quaint scuba center, the ex-grunt pondered what she would say when she finally came face-to-face with her old leader. She had never met him before, but had always appreciated Archie for founding the organization -- the closest thing to a family that she’s ever had. Her heartbeat quickened with anticipation as she entered the establishment.
"I’m here for lessons!” A lie; the first thing that escaped her mouth before she could stop it.
