Now. First thing to understand is that the legal language within the new TOS *implies* that Disney is only referring to people who use its services, people who clicked and agreed to this new TOS. But it’s implication only. That’s not what this TOS actually says.

This TOS spends a lot of time defining fanworks, or as they call it, User Generated Content.

They want to make it clear that,

a) You totally have the right to make User Generated Content (UGC) all you want.

b) You can put that UGC anywhere you want, whether they own the site or someone else does. What matters is that you’ve put that UGC in a publically accessible place…like, oh, AO3.

c) Disney spends a few breaths saying that the creator of the UGC owns the copyright to that UGC…except if you read those words carefully, they’re not guaranteeing you anything, because THEY own the copyright.

d) Disney then says, since they own the copyright to your UGC, they can literally do anything they want with it. They can steal it, crib it, use the entire thing as their own, make money off of it, reprint it, ANYTHING–and you do not get credit. You do not get paid. You do not get acknowledgement. You might get a DMCA telling you take down your UGC because it is now *their* content that they’re selling and how dare you steal from them. (No, I’m not kidding.)

Disney doesn’t want your Tweets. They just wanted to see who was paying attention, and how, and if they could get away with it. (Yes, they did go after someone who reposted Disney’s own tweets. No more information on that yet.)

g) Yes, you should absolutely take this seriously. You should be terrified, because how many fan content creators have the bank to fight this if their “copyrighted content” that Disney specifies is still *their* copyrighted content is stolen? OTW exists for this very reason, but this is fucking Disney. They. Own. Almost. Everything. In. The. Corporate. United. States. Entertainment. Industry.

h) No, your MCU, Star Wars, Pixar, Disney animated films, ANY such fanworks, are not safe. If Disney likes it, they will take it. If you say they can’t, they’ll point to their new site-wide TOS and say that they can. Is that legal? Don’t actually know, but think about who’s in the White House right now. Think about who he’d support. Yes, the Library of Congress and the House of Reps are supposed to be in charge, but how long until we could push for them to deal with/fix this shit?

i) Yes, Disney is probably trying to steal content in order to survive the pandemic, seeing as their major sources of revenue (parks and movies) aren’t happening right now.

j) Yes, I will be removing my Star Wars content. I didn’t work on that fucking story for nearly 20 years just for some corporate shill to fucking steal it.

I’m not sure the exact reason, but my best guess is that since cats are very social animals, they a) are comforted by the presence of other cats nearby and b) they can share the workload while one hunts and one watches the babies. Four eyes are better than two when it comes to caring for kids of any species, especially when you have anywhere between two to twelve of them.

My grandma’s barn cats always have shared litters, even if they have a month age gap between them or even when one of the adults wasn’t even pregnant!

Here’s a photo of Dave’s sisters, Beans and Marshmallow, caring for their kittens together (in the barn wall because they’re dumb and the barn isn’t completely safe). Marshmallow had 2 kittens last year, and Beans had 5. Marshmallow is better at hunting so she did most of that, while Beans stayed home to watch the babies!

Because cats are such social species, I think it also makes it easier for humans to look after and handle their kittens. Chances are your two cats also see your family as the “moms” of the litters too!

@followthebluebell might have more info on cats and litters since he fosters? Anyone else who probably knows more about cats than me is welcome to chime in.

So the cats with the highest litter survival rate were cats who grew up together and raised their litters together.  The cats with the lowest litter survival rate were outsider cats, usually cats who had been dumped by former owners or had migrated into the colony.  The dumped cats generally had very poor social manners, and behaved in ways that a human would consider ‘dominant’ or ‘alpha’.  These guys and gals aggressively chased other cats away from food sources, acted antagonistically, and instigated fights even when another cat was trying to de-escalate the situation. 

Despite this, the outsider toms had a higher rate of reproduction compared to colony toms.  They were generally more willing to fight aggressively than the colony-raised males, so they tended to breed more, even considering their shorter lifespans compared to the colony males.  HOWEVER, outsider females had MUCH lower rates of reproduction because the colony females did not want to help them raise the resulting offspring.  These outsider offspring were also more frequently abandoned than colony-raised litters and had a higher rate of infections from fights as they got older.  The kittens being raised by outsider females were not learning the right cat manners— they weren’t learning how to raise litters themselves, they weren’t learning how to communicate with other cats, and they were themselves at a higher risk of being flat-out abandoned by a mother who had no idea what to do.

By contrast, the colony-raised kittens were more willing to share resources with each other, were less inclined to fight, spent more time with their mothers (especially female kittens), and spent more time around the colony toms without fights.  These kittens tended to spend more time playing as well, honing their hunting skills. 

So, raising litters communally isn’t just about having extra pairs of eyes out.  It’s also about raising kittens to become adjusted adults with the skills needed to navigate socially within the colony.  Please note that this is largely about cat-cat interactions and doesn’t always translate to human-cat interactions.  A cat who doesn’t get along with other cats is NOT a bad cat!!  They can still be perfectly loving pets towards their humans.
