Childhood (Part 2): Later on, his mother met an older gentleman through nursing. Let’s just call him ‘Grey’. Grey would often relieve his mother during her shifts. They spoke a lot to one another, and became good friends. Joey’s mother grew comfortable and would sometimes communicate her struggles to Grey. Grey was gay, but offered to open his home to her and her family to help alleviate some of the hardship. Joey (age 10) and his mother moved in with Grey. Everyone had their own bedrooms in Grey’s home. Shortly after the move, Grey began to molest Joey multiple times a week. Joey attempted to tell his mother, and was dismissed. This molestation went on for 5 years, before Joey got old enough to begin to fight back. Joey told a friend of his what was going on. The friend’s mom called the police. Grey was not arrested. Joey’s mother told Joey not to say anything to the police, so that Grey wouldn’t lose his nursing license. But since that day, the molestation finally stopped. One day after all of this, Grey went to have a “chat” with Joey about sneaking out of the house. Joey’s bipolar disorder was in full gear, and technically hadn’t been properly treated yet by the time he was 15. Grey began to scold Joey, and violently grabbed Joey’s arm and slammed him into a wall to force him to stay, and listen to what he was saying. By that time Grey has lost any, and all respect from Joey. Grey was a constant trigger for Joey, and Joey threatened Grey with a knife during their altercation. It was then, when Joey received his first felony... Childhood (Part 1): Like most of us, Joey grew up in a broken home. Joey’s biological father was having an affair with his mother. The day his mother informed his father of the pregnancy, his father informed his mother he was not going to leave his family of 6 or 7. Joey’s mother was a single mom, and a hard worker to provide for her family. She was a home health aid, and had a LPN nursing license. Joey had siblings of which he was the youngest. Joey had a speech impediment since birth. Speech therapy did not help with this, Not even a little. Joey also has always had photophobia (extreme sensitivity to light), and a lot of the photos I have of him... he wears sunglasses in majority of them. Joey was diagnosed with Bipolar Type 1 (with rapid cycling) Disorder at the age of 15, but had been exhibiting major behavioral symptoms since 6-7 years old. There was time when Joey’s mother had sent him away to a facility for a few years because his behavior was so out of control, she thought the facility could help. The facility helped with structure and scheduled task, but not significantly with his behavioral problems. Joey was often a target for bullying not just in school because of his stuttering, but at home as well because he was the youngest sibling. School was not easy for him, and he required IEPs and transfers to special classes and special schools to be able to keep up with the curriculum, as well as get the proper help and guidance for his behavior issues. Because of his mother’s work schedule, she barely had the time to commit to him. Intro: This is my fiancé, Joey. I met Joey for the very first time late 2008. Joey was released from prison June 1st, 2008 after spending 5 years inside. I will get into the “crime and punishment” details later. For now, I just want to explain what this blog is going to be about... I wanted to share some of the stories I’ve heard from Joey himself. Things that have also confirmed through several ex cons I’ve spoken to. Things that I never even knew, things I couldn’t believe I was hearing, and the mayhem of what “rehabilitation” after prison (to become ‘acceptable’ members of society) is really like for actual ex cons. I have sat down with him, and asked if I could do this. I think the world needs to know what is happening behind those fences, and what type of human beings the prison systems actually create vs the sunshine and raindrop bs they feed you. And we aren’t talking about episodes of ‘Locked Up’ or ‘Prison Break’ here... where they only show you what is acceptable for television, and what the F.C.C. thinks will make a good plot for more viewers... we are talking actual reality. My hopes for these blogs are as follows... first and foremost, to tell my best friend’s story. Through telling his story I hope to educate people ignorant to how prisons work and run. To make people more aware of how the prison systems don’t actually rehabilitate criminals. Expose the after effects of prison including the fact that every inmate released are just being set up to go back whether it be by impossible standards/rules to abide by even after serving their time, and being released... and also, expose the PTSD that every inmate acquires eventually through being subjected to what goes on inside. Actually, scratch that... I have so much to tell you all, and I can’t even begin to scratch the surface in this first blog.
