I went to the show without any expectations and I think this is my favourite way to go into things. I hadn't read anything about the Shanghai production, nor had I read anything about the city, but by the end of our 5-day trip, I found myself enamoured with both.
My sister and I bought tickets for Thursday, Friday, and Sunday. Our first show ended up being utterly bonkers and so we bought Saturday tickets as soon as it was over.
While four shows still proved to be incredibly insufficient to discover the new storylines, new characters, changes to loops, new 1:1s(!), and the beautiful labyrinthian building that is The McKinnon Hotel, we got to see so much, and I felt again the high of setting on a new adventure and having love fill up my heart so that I kept getting a stomachache.
There are lots of big and small moments that have been replaying in my head and these are some of them:
Seeing a serious and out of breath Macbeth run into the ballroom just in time for the banquet, his long hair wet, covering his bloodied face. (Ren Qing Cai Rang is a force. He has an air of gravitas I've not seen in any other Macbeth.)
Going into Macduff's ROLLING apartment and walking through it with my jaw on the floor. (They have their own room with a big bed with the softest-looking, pale pink sheets! A spacious dining room with a huge table on top of which sits A TOWER OF GLASSES some empty some FILLED WITH MILK. At the end of the long hallway, there is another dining room with an avalanche of ashes coming through the wall and this mountain covers half of the chair that sits at the head of the table.) I. cried.
Walking amidst the pine trees with Zhang Xuehao's Banquo. He led us quietly with a flashlight. (I wondered what we were looking for.) I had never seen the ballroom and the trees within them lit this way, and standing behind this person and his coat felt like A Moment. (I found out two days ago that Xuehao checked out of the hotel last week and so it was indeed A Moment.)
Zhang Long's Taxi cradles a teddy bear like it's his baby. He looks at it lovingly and bounces it in his arms as he walks from one corner of his shop to another, as if trying to put it to sleep.
He arranges dried flowers on an open terrarium and, me and other white masks, we are watching him intently, and I thought, Who do I love more? This person who makes minutiae compelling or the people around me who are watching him and finding it compelling? (I think it was the first time I felt such fondness for other white masks.)
Li Haocheng's Macbeth, arms tense, face red, sits atop a sleeping Duncan and presses a silky blue pillow against his face. As Duncan tries to reach for Macbeth's face, Macbeth repeatedly shushes him, like a father wishing his child would go back to sleep.

On the night of their 600th show and 2 years anniversary, every guest who attended the cabaret received a special gift from the hotel: a bottle of scent that is actually used in a certain room/space in McKinnon. Fans were very touched by this thoughtful gift. At that time, we had no idea how many bottles or how many varieties they gave out that night. Today their official Weibo and WeChat account announced that, there were in total 13 types of scent. As you can see from the picture, each of them has a special tag attached to the bottle. Here is a breakdown of each type, with translation of the tag, and my guess of which room/space is it associated.
Casting fears — Lady Macduff’s 1:1 room (package of salt)
The smell of scheme/conspiracy — Dining room
Bourbon and rubber — speakeasy bar
Rave climax — replica bar
Herb totem — Apothecary, herb room
Datura pattern — this one I haven’t figured it out
Demon’s eye — Hecate’s Lair
Rebecca — Agnes/Grace’s bedroom

Red string of love — Bride and Groom’s bedroom (this one I really appreciate the attention to detail. If you’ve seen the wedding scene and had one of Bride’s 1:1s, you’ll understand the significance of the red string)
Strangeness and familiarness — lobby
Lastly, if you open each of the folded tags, you’ll see a handwritten thank you note, some in Chinese, some in English, which is also a very nice touch to it.
I want all of these. Can they please just sell them in the gift shop? Can the McKittrick give these out as gifts to the fans? My first trip, my clothes REEKED of the fourth floor rubber scent so I would just love to have that one to sniff, and imagine that I’m getting lost in the twists and turns, and imagine I’m watching Bride, and Husband again.

the actress playing lady macbeth stared directly into my eyes and grabbed my hands and I was a part of a scene and it was so crazy and intense and cool and magical and AHHHH
i was immediately separated from my friend at the start of the show and spent the whole time wandering around the set and wow it's so incredible.
it feels at the same time voyeuristic and intimate and completely immersive
hearing the shouts of another scene happening in another room and floor, and knowing that the events of the story are unfolding all around you
AHHHH
all of the actors were INCREDIBLE they were so charismatic and they way they moved omg. like they were weightless. the choreography was absolutely stunning. they were electric.
actual life changing experience also i had a cocktail before the show started which was a good idea i think. bit of liquid courage. i probably would have been too nervous and in my head to have fully enjoyed it otherwise.
i loveeeeeee nonlinear storytelling. show me where we are. now show me how we got here. the end before the beginning. show me how it was inevitable or how many chances we had to change things(nothing was ever going to change). let's meet in the middle as all the puzzle pieces slide into place hell yeah that's the good shit.

Hello Mr Mike! I LOVED Midnight Mass. And the Muslim representation in that show was just *chefs kiss*. So i was wondering, did you have anyone on set that was Muslim that helped or was it all just research? And Rahul Kohli obviously did such justice to Sheriff Hassan <3
We did our research during the writing process, but it was really the contributions of two Muslim consultants that made all the difference.
The first was Mohammed Bouissa, who went through each script during the writing process and gave us feedback on the scene work. He happens to be a lifelong friend of Rahul Kohli, so it actually made for a very special dynamic. He helped us shape the character of Hassan in every detail, and some scenes - like the parent/teacher scene at the school - are a direct result of his input. He helped us so much with developing the character and making sure our dialog was on point. I personally learned an enormous amount from him.
And then, we were lucky to have a man named Mohammed Hajem with us on set during production to make sure we were handling the production details correctly. He was a Vancouver local who consulted on a wide variety of things, including the set decoration of Hassan's house, props, behavioral details in individual scenes (like at the Crock Pot Luck), and the authenticity of the prayers, both in pronunciation and physical behavior. He was with us throughout production, and his input on the final beach prayer scene in particular was incredibly moving.
I am so grateful for their contribution to the series. It was a wonderful education for our cast, our crew, and (I hope) some of our viewers, and it led to some of the work I'm the most proud of in my whole career.
