Merry Christmas to all who celebrate! These are Last Minute Christmas Stockings, started a whole 3 days ago. They are monogrammed because I didn't have time to do their whole names. Done in acrylic (Red Heart) on size 8 needles.
Project for Extreme Solar Systems III #ExSS3. In Knitpicks Diadem fingering yarn, alpaca/silk blend. Will eventually be a scarf for my mom, might even finish it by Christmas. Porcupine stitch stitch from Barbara Walker, vol 2.
Bat-shawl Pattern

Star Baby Hat
I love making baby hats. They are quick, cute, and fun. It’s a great way to try out new concepts. And really, when it comes right down to it, people will be admiring how cute the baby is rather than noticing flaws in your workwomanship.
I like chevrons for color work, because it’s an easy way to make an interesting pattern while keeping color changes to a minimum. And I like the chevrons in the round can turn into a star at the top if you decrease the right way. The one tricky bit here was making the transition between the 1x1 ribbing and the chevrons. Luckily, you can hide that bit by turning up the brim.
Made with Knitpicks Swish worsted yarn, on size 6 needles (5 for the ribbing).

Fibonacci spiral blanket, completed July 2013. Cat included for scale. I got the yarn from a friend of my in-laws, and it is all naturally colored. Didn’t realize that the yarn color was slightly different in the lighter bunch until it was too late. I wrote one of my first python scripts to calculate the stitch lengths for the quarter-circles.
The color illusion blanket is taking forever, because it is huge. Still feels a bit like working with yarn spaghetti.
Knot theory
Knot theory is a real thing. Sadly, it is completely unrelated to string theory, even though it sounds like it should be. However, as any knitter knows, when working with real strings, it is all too easy to get tangled up in knots.
Yesterday, I made some tasty knots with my son.
On the lower left is his attempt to make an airplane, which actually turned out not-too-badly. Only two of them were the canonical pretzel shape. In fact, one of them was just him throwing the dough down in a heap. There is also a square know and a bowline in there.

Just to show that I haven't been knitting *nothing* over the last year. My husband says it looks goofy. I say what's the point of a hat except to look goofy?
Bat-shawl
I’ll admit that Batman is one of my favorite superheroes. Dark, brooding, and wicked smart. And the toys! Those wonderful toys!
It occurred to me one day that the Batman logo, particularly from The Dark Knight, has some elegant symmetry to it. Symmetry that could be pretty easily replicated with knitting. And sometimes, a fangirl needs a little bit of elegance in her life. And so the concept of the bat-shawl was born.
Knit with Knitpicks Stroll fingering weight yarn in black, 100g hank on either size 3 or 4 needles, I forget which.
The logo stands out better over a light-colored shirt, but it would be a nice subtle look over dark clothing, too.
Epilogue: I have since sent the Bat-shawl off to a loving home, since I’m not actually not that much of a fangirl. But I have since started work on another super-shawl, which may someday be featured here, hopefully in the not-too-distant future.

The beginning of a multi-color project inevitably starts out looking like yarn spaghetti
Completed disk for @knitted_bd. Features include flared radial profile, spiral waves, and planetesimals. It’s orange because organics in the dust give it a reddish color, or maybe because that’s the color mohair I had. Modeled by Uranus, which is actually much smaller than a brown dwarf, but Uranus did have a disk once, too, as evidenced by its rings.

Formation of a brown dwarf disk, specifically for @knitted_bd. The composition of this disk is mohair (yes, the label says Sears Roebuck and Co.) and plastic beads. The cat tail will not be part of the final product. I'm knitting it using two skeins at once, each ball making alternate rounds. It's basically because I want it to have spiral structure, and to be a hyperbolic surface all at once, but it's a bit difficult to explain.

Trying to turn this into the back of sweater. It's knit in the round, and this is the third? fourth? time that I started it over from scratch. I kept having flashbacks to high school geometry while working on this. I think Mrs. Hamilton would still be proud, anyway.
