Human designs (First Iteration) of Chosen and Dark, there's still room for improvement

A little Cho thing to give me some fuel motivation >u< Either way, I have always found his name an interesting thing to compare with how he is. Certaintly at first glance, he lives up to it; Many powers and technically was the hero in the end of day during the AvA season 2(?). But when upon looking closer... he's just. Well. He's more stained with blood than the blood he's supposed to save. He has far more bad doings and flaws than goods that can compensate for it. Just a silly little thing I wanted a little drawing out of ^^

Victim was given probably the worst possible treatment a living creature could be given for the first 9 months of his life. He escaped, and at first he did seem to be getting healthier. He had a solid support system in the form of Mitsi and the rest of the villagers, and we see his progress during the montage. He's healing. And then Mitsi (and probably more than a few people he knew personally, but Mitsi is the one he gets hung up on) dies, and Victim believes he knows who was responsible. From what we can tell, he then becomes absolutely obsessed with catching Mitsi's killer, to the point where it's basically all he can focus on. With one exception. Victim is also still trying to figure out a way to get revenge on Alan. I do genuinely believe he had originally given up that idea when he still had Mitsi, but losing her sent him off the deep end, and he picked up that line of thought as well. If you're going to get revenge on your lover's killer, may as well hit your own tormentor too, right? The thing is though, it didn't have to send him off the deep end. Victim lost the person he probably loved most, yes, but he didn't lose everyone. He still had Agent, and we see that at least some Rocket Corp employees did survive. Grief and anger destroyed Victim, but for all that he had no say in the circumstances that led to it, he was the one who chose to let that destruction in.

The Chosen One was also mistreated, in his case at a (presumably) lower intensity for longer. Four and a half years to be exact. We can probably also assume he didn't really have any sort of positive interactions with anyone in that time (even if he wasn't kept isolated from anyone but Alan, the icons didn't seem particularly interested in becoming friends with him). That's quite a long time to build up resentment and a 'I can't stop the bad things from happening to me' mentality. And then he manages to free himself, and makes a friend who he escapes with. And you can tell how happy he is. In the brief flashback showing Chosen and Dark in the tunnel after they leave the PC, Chosen is the one who reaches out for a high five. Chosen has never been particularly emotive (at least by stick figure standards), but the fact that he reached out for that high five (a 'we did a good thing together' gesture) when Dark only flexed shows that he absolutely wanted that connection with another stick. We see Chosen and Dark's ideas and mentalities start to diverge in AVM: Beta. Chosen actively engages with the game and starts exploring its mechanics, while Dark just spends the majority of his time fighting. Mind you, both of them are enjoying themselves, but it does show a difference in how they approach things. Chosen doesn't want Dark to destroy his first build, but allows it anyway. We don't know the exact reason why, but I have a suspicion that I'll come back on later. (Also, I'd like to point out that AVM: Beta is quite literally the most relaxed and at peace we've seen Chosen be throughout the entire series, and yet he's still jumpy. He lasers a creeper without a second thought simply because it startled him, and while we know that creepers absolutely deserve that, Chosen had no idea what was behind him. For all he knew it could've been a passive mob) Once they meet back up, it's Dark who takes the lead in leaving, but Chosen still looks curious. I'm willing to bet Chosen would've probably stayed in Minecraft for days on end if he'd been able to. And then the attacks on animation-hosting websites happen. He didn't seem to care much for Facebook or Angry Birds, but we see Chosen start to have second thoughts on Stickpage (notice the reduced but still present fire in his hands), and outright regretting his actions on Newgrounds. We actually see in Skim's storyboards for the memory section in AVA13 that Chosen was thinking 'oh god, what have I done?' in the moment right before Dark showed up to throw that fireball at Mitsi. The thing is, Chosen almost certainly could have stopped Dark in that moment, but he didn't. All he does is lift his hand in a half-hearted 'stop' gesture, but it was so small and subtle that Dark probably wouldn't have noticed it even if he was paying attention to Chosen in that moment. That's the most obvious example of Chosen's biggest problem, but I can also point to him still reaching out to Dark for help near the start of AVA13, and his complete lack of just... anything for the rest of the episode until he has no choice.

Chosen's problem is that he's both way too passive, almost never being proactive in anything major, and way too forgiving of Dark specifically. Chosen just waits for things to happen to him rather than taking charge and doing his own thing, and on top of that, there has quite literally only been one single instance of him telling Dark 'no' on screen, and it was when Dark was trying to launch the first Virabot. That being said, based on Dark's reaction, he doesn't seem to be particularly used to Chosen disagreeing with him. There's also the fact that Dark still reached out to H4CK3R after their fight and seemed genuinely upset at being rejected (in other words, Dark probably isn't used to being rejected). All this tells me that Chosen was (and probably still is) willing to forgive pretty much anything save for literal mass murder. And remember the thing I said I'd come back on later? Yeah, I think the reason Chosen allowed Dark to destroy his build is because Chosen didn't want to do anything that might limit or upset Dark. More specifically, I think Chosen was unwilling to possibly lose his only friend. He was willing to put his loyalty over his morals, unfortunately to the detriment of probably hundreds of animations. And just like Victim, he didn't have to do this. He didn't have to stay passive. He could've told Dark to stop, could've physically intercepted the fireballs, could've done something other than just stand there and watch it happen. Chosen's problem is that he's way too passive, and so desperate to keep the one friend he has that he's willing to ignore actual atrocities. He's clearly trying to get better (he stopped to save a random stick in Wanted when it would've been in his own best interests to keep moving, and he didn't even attempt to attack Victim in The Box until he was basically forced to defend himself), but he also can't seem to stop wanting to crawl back to Dark.

Honestly, it just goes to show how much nature and nurture both can and can't matter in someone's personality. Orange had a bit of a rough start but was treated kindly by Alan afterwards, and became kind as a result. Dark technically wasn't mistreated by Alan either (Alan largely ignored him, but when he did interact it wasn't mean), but still became a terrible person of his own accord. Chosen had an extremely rough start and faced the longest period of mistreatment, and that did shape him into becoming destructive. However, he realized his mistakes and chose to become kinder by himself. Victim faced arguably the worst mistreatment of all, and at first chose to leave his past behind and become kind. But then the source (or I guess a better analogy would be 'mirror', since kindness will reflect what it was learned from) of that kindness was taken away, and he was given the same choice again, only this time he chose to become cruel.

I don’t really know how I feel about this. Sure there were bits I enjoyed doing and look decent but I managed to somehow lose like so much of her helmet in the process (how I don’t know) and I know I am VERY far from getting the style down. But it was also my first time trying to do this so idk what I was expecting.
