how did my ancestors survive the brutal unforgiving wilderness when I get anxiety sweats from going to Target
to be fair im sure your ancestors would have the exact same reaction going to a Target
In the brutal unforgiving wilderness false positives cost nothing and false negatives are expensive. Youâre better off being afraid of something that canât hurt you than not afraid of something that can hurt you.
In a world where we mostly arenât in danger, day to day, as long as we donât play in traffic or jump off something, thatâs no longer quite as adaptive.
We got our anxiety from a long, unbroken line of ancestors who were scared enough to survive, and pass on those genes!Â
It helps me sometimes to think about that at night, when I canât sleep because my heart is pounding over something like âwhat if my usually reliable alarm clock doesnât work in the morning for some reason and Iâm late for work and lose my job and everyone hates me.â Thereâs nothing wrong with me, I just have a lot of extra, unused run-from-tigers juice that my grandparents left me.
âUnused run-from-tigers juice.â
I love that.
Our brains have been running Hunter/Gatherer 1.0 for 60,000 years without a software upgrade.
excuse you. tools and language are each worth a major update at least.
weâre on like Hunter/Gatherer v1.2.7 or thereabouts
heart: randomly starts beating faster me: what is it what do you see
âiâm in kind of a weird mental place right nowâ i say, as if there are times when i am not in a weird mental place
A few hundred feet off Highway 18, about halfway between Portland and my momâs house, thereâs this pickup truck stuck up in the limbs of an oak tree.Â
My friend Zak pointed it out: I wonder how that got there.Â
I had made the drive less than a month before without noticing it.Â
My mom was out of town for the weekend. I took my boyfriend to finally see the Oregon coast. We drank red wine from the bottle and fell asleep together on one couch. In the morning, I couldnât figure out the coffee machine, so he drove to the next town over and brought back paper cups with a picture of a pirate on the side. We went to the Ripleyâs Believe It or Not museum and bought trashy souvenirs from the gift shop and I said to him everything in this moment is exactly perfect and six days later my brother was dead.
ďŽ
My first semester of law school, I had a mental health crisis.Â
I would sit in class and list things: this desk is real. the highlighter is real. my left thigh has a freckle above the knee so thatâs real.Â
I have hundreds of photos from those first few months, all from my own apartment. Pictures of the sinks turned off. The stove knobs. The freezer, closed. My key in the door lock.Â
ďŽ
Oregon oaks are marcescent â the leaves change color at the same time as the trees around them, but donât fall. The dead leaves hang on all winter. When the wind picks up, you would swear itâs raining by the noise of it.Â
ďŽ
Before he died, my brother drove up to Sacramento for an apprenticeship with a guy who made knives. I donât know everything that happened there, but I know most of the ending.
All the outlet covers pried off all the walls.Â
I know thatâs where you keep the cameras, he said. Iâm not a moron.Â
Theyâre going to keep him 72 hours, my mom said. At least 72 hours.
ďŽ
We never talked about mental illness. Just sat next to each other in silence for decades. Fiddling with the car radio. Up in the tree.
ďŽ
Even at the worst of it, I was surrounded by resources. This is a privilege, undoubtedly. It was also profoundly unhelpful.Â
Career counselors and professors talked about income potential and market desirability and I pressed my thumbs as deep as they would go in the spaces between my ribs.Â
What does it matter how fast I can move, I thought, if I canât get the hell out of this tree?
I didnât need affirmations about the ways it gets better. I didnât need vague promises of support; of âjust let me know what I can do.â I needed someone to bring me a fucking ladder.
Someone did. âI will make you a doctorâs appointment right now,â she said. âI will drive you there myself.âÂ
ďŽ
We donât need to be louder or more persistent or more earnest about helping â we need to be more specific. We need to make it as easy as saying yes, because saying yes is hard enough.
My go-to question for a struggling friend used to be, âWhat can I do for you?â I donât ask that anymore.Â
I ask, âCan I order dinner delivered to your apartment?â I ask, âIs there an email you need to send that I can draft?â âCan I take your dog for a walk?â âCan I find a therapist nearby that takes your insurance?âÂ
Can I get you a ladder?Â
ďŽ
I was back on Highway 18 right before New Yearâs. It was an unusually cold winter for Oregon, the schools had already run out of snow days. We drove at about fifteen miles per hour, leaning forward to see through the fog.Â
But there was that tree. Even in the frost, the leaves held fast. Withered. Brittle.Â
Hanging on.Â
alright donât be mad but. i never read the great gatsby. i know i was supposed to. yes, it was assigned to us. i even know, more or less, what happens in the book. technically, i wrote an essay about it, i think, once or twice.Â
at the time, i hadnât read any book assigned to me. ever. it wasnât that i didnât like to read. i loved reading. but homework took place in a function of my brain that i couldnât access. i would sit in libraries or at my desk and just. not do my homework. i spent hours like this, days like this, years like this. just not doing what was assigned to me, no matter the consequences, no matter how badly i wanted to be doing it. i just wouldnât. and i wouldnât go to class because i didnât want to deal with the fact i didnât do the homework. and then i wouldnât get the homework. so i didnât do it.
i remember realizing while i was doing college applications that i had actually, real-life fucked up. that it was permanent, what i had done. that i had a C- of an average and no future to look rosy at. and i still couldnât make myself do things. i tried to submit applications only to realize iâd shoved off the date to the very last moment. and i was fucked.
it takes me three years and two transfers and three new starts before i am actually real-life trained how to study, how to read, how to enjoy being assigned things.Â
and i watch parents of my students yell at students for being the same person i was six years ago: screaming at an A-, confused at skipped classes, punishing missed homework. and these students donât have an answer. they just donât do things. even if they want to. and they look at me, confused and defeated and without an answer for their parents. âi just canât,â i hear a lot, and i understand.
parents donât like âexecutive dysfunctionâ as a reason. âanxietyâ and âdepressionâ are often misdiagnosed as âprocrastinatingâ and âlazyâ. kids just learn theyâre like this. that theyâre always going to be. that itâs their fault, permanently. they are surrounded by books they didnât read. and it doesnât feel good. it feels like suffocating.
today i started âthe great gatsby.â i promise. one day, itâll feel easy.

look if youâre feeling really low the questions âam i hungry,â âam i thirsty,â âam i sleepy,â âdo i need to bathe,â etc ARE very very important for you to ask yourself but something else you should ask is âhave i done anything today??â
when youâve got mental illness esp anything related to depression or executive dysfunction it can be VERY HARD for you to be productive sometimes, but. the human brain literally hates being bored and it hates feeling like it hasnât accomplished anything; sitting around stagnant is just gonna make you more miserable.
even just getting up and washing a couple dishes can take a shit ton of the weight off. it doesnât have to be something big. just do⌠something.
âI didnât foresee any of this. I had OCD - I still have OCD - and very taboo obsessive thoughts that I kept secret since I was 15. In my mid twenties when I was on the other side of decent therapy, I had this overwhelming urge to tell my story. It struck me as really unjust that this was something I, and so many other people, were living with in secret.â
Issue 01: The Accidental Advocate, explores Rose Cartwrightâs journey from anonymity into the public eye, the founding of Made of Millions, her Channel 4 TV show, and whatâs to come for the mental health movement.
âMy depression is a shape shifter; one day it is as small as a firefly in the palm of a bear, the next day, itâs the bear.â
â Sabrina Benaim, from Depression & Other Magic Tricks
the only reason i still have depression is because i canât take my brain out of my skull and blow on it like a ds cartridge

[Drawing of a pumpkin jellyfish next to a caption that says âJust because your mental state makes it hard to enjoy things right now doesnât mean youâll never enjoy anything again. You will enjoy things again. You will be okay again.â in yellow text against a teal background.]
alternative depression tips for when you read the âdepression tipsâ post and laugh hollowly, bc only in your fondest dreams could you manage to do any of those things
dry shampoo and face wipes are your friend. if you can brush your teeth youâll feel maybe 2% less disgusting. wash your hands.
smelling nice is gr9, rubbing moisturiser in is Exhausting. perfume, scented candles and linen sprays are way quicker.
try to change your clothes at least every other day. wear sweats or pjs as often as you physically can.
you donât need to put on underwear if youâre not leaving the house (that goes double for bras and binders)
drink any water that hasnât been sitting out on your desk for a week. dust doesnât taste good. stay hydrated. I fill one of those 2 litre bottles in the morning and keep it with me so I donât have to get up and walk to the sink.
re: cleaning, try and keep one room vaguely clean. if everywhere else is a shit hole thatâs fine, but you can go sit in your one tidy space and chill for a bit. itâs fine if thatâs the bathroom or just the corner of your bedroom where thereâs no crap on the floor. find a tiny space that isnât horrifying and sit in it.
music helps.
eat a thing. +5 points if it has a fresh fruit or vegetable in it. take out is acceptable if it comes with veggies.
if your creativity curled up and died a long time ago try and find something that at least reminds you what it was like to feel inspired. watch a film, look at some art (probably not your own), read a thing. if that makes you feel worse, just?? donât think about it??
grounding yourself is actually really helpful. open the window and breathe for 2 minutes. lay down on the floor and feel your whole body (unless you donât want to in which case: lay down and donât feel anything except the floor)Â
human interaction is Good. text a family member you donât hate if you have one. message a friend. reply to someoneâs personal post with âSAMEâ. make your own personal post asking the void for validation. stare out the window at people and remind yourself that life exists outside of the black space inside your head. whatever works.
pets are amazing, agreed. watch some funny animal vines if you donât have one.
My bummy ass seriously needed this 2 fucking days ago
