When there’s no written record of a culture – and the earliest examples of writing are around 5,000 years old – we have to rely on artifacts and biological remains. Authors of stone-age diet plans have relied on out of date and, well, half-digested archaeological evidence of what life was like thousands of years ago. Unfortunately, most “stone-age” or “paleo” diets rely on outdated methodology and iffy logic. Fortunately there are sources on what our stone age ancestors ate. Biological remains – like the food in mummies’ stomachs or chemical analysis of skeletons’ composition – are one source. Archaeological remains – like residues in pots, or tools made for use with certain food types – are another source. And since the mid-1900s, scholars have argued that language can provide clues about stone-age lifestyles, even in the complete absence of writing.
