âCULTUREDâ A TRAVEL BLOG BY ANTHONY GASKINS: ENTRY 1 - âA KEY TO LIFEâ
August 8, 2016 â A Key to Life After 11-hours of flying, I may have only notched a grand total of 3 hours of sleep. Even though the plane flew turbulence free, I shared a whole cushy row with only my partner, I still couldnât get comfortable. Not to mention there were three young children having an even worse time finding the cruising altitude of a 43,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean even more difficult to manage. I related to their frustration, but enjoyed their occasional moments of calm playfulness. They were adorable, curly haired and cheeks full of love. Their mother and father tried to offer as much comfort to them as possible, even if it meant sacrificing their own - and that realization stayed with me. Parents make tremendous sacrifices that hardly go noticed. After landing at Cairo International Airport, we were greeted by many stares of wonderment. My lovely partner and I are quiet the eye catcher even in the states, not to sound arrogant, but our unique coupling of brown and tan skin complexions has a tendency to stimulate curiosity. She is a stunningly gorgeous first generation Egyptian American, who sports a golden tan colored glow, while I boast my chocolate melenated Afro American position. As we move through customs, we get curious looks, smiles, and many questions about whether or not we need a taxi or help with our bags. As a young kid, I never in a million years imagined that I would be offered an opportunity to experience Egypt. Â However, this trip marks more than just a casual site seeing vacation. During my time here I will partake in a religious ceremony known as the âKabt Kitabâ, or (Keb-bik-teb), where my partner and I will announce our relationship in front of her family and Allah.
We are treating this like an informal engagement, and hopefully next summer have an official, westernized wedding, with all the beautiful hopes and childhood dreams⌠But letâs stay in the present. After grabbing our luggage, and few items from duty free, Tammyâs older brother met us with a driver that would take us through Egyptâs mainland to meet her parents on the coast of Alexandria. Tired of sitting but thankful we made it safely, we ride down the main highway dodging locals who casually stroll across, staring down cars as if in a cross walk. Distant views of pyramids are sketched in the dusty haze that floats atop of the Egyptian landscape. The Nile River boldly flexes its importance as we drive through Cairoâs historic legacy, painted with wise old apartment buildings and beautifully constructed mosques. The city whispers spirituality, inviting a gracious sense of humility that I respectfully acknowledge as my eyelids drowsily fall shut. Tammyâs parents are beautiful people. They welcome us with warm smiles and loving embraces. Their villa sits in front of a sandy beach that leads to the aqua blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Tammyâs father mentions that life here is simple, quiet, and less hot than other nearby areas, as 70âs and 80âs classics play on the radio in the background. During dinner, Tammy proclaims aloud that this is the first time their whole family has been in Egypt at the same time. Her mother, father and brother all agree, as they reminisce over the years past. It was an awesome moment for me to witness, as I listen and enjoy the retelling of stories in broken Arabic. It made me think of the family I observed on the plane, and the sacrifices the parents made in order to ensure their children had the best experience possible. It was a reminder that family is probably one of the most valuable components to life, and is something that I am fortunate to be able to build with her.

Filmed in the infamous, Southside of Chicago, Rise is a music video by Anthony Gaskins and PCPMedia. Featuring, Chicago native, Jonah B. Taylor and Anthony Gaskins.
Rise is a story about friendship, and the jealousy that it can often breed. Inspired by the Pulitzer Prize Award Winning play, "TopDog/Underdog" by Suzan Lori Parks, Taylor plays the role of, "Fev", an experienced 3 card monte player that has a natural talent for the hustle. Gaskins who plays, "Lyrc", is his right hand man, but has every intention to move into the top spot by out hustling his partner.
What happens when a friendly rivalry turns into a deep hatred? Will you rise above your ego to mend a tattered relationship?
Rise is brought to you by, PCPMedia.us
