Old men ought to be explorers Here and there does not matter We must be still and still moving Into another intensity For a further union, a deeper communion Through the dark cold and empty desolation, The wave cry, the wind cry, the vast waters Of the petrel and the porpoise. In my end is my beginning. — East Coker
What Do You See in Your Clouds?
From My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers Behold, He cometh with clouds. — Revelation 1:7
In the Bible clouds are always connected with God. Clouds are those sorrows or sufferings or providences, within or without our personal lives, which seem to dispute the rule of God. It is by those very clouds that the Spirit of God is teaching us how to walk by faith. If there were no clouds, we should have no faith. The clouds are but the dust of our Father’s feet. The clouds are a sign that He is there. What a revelation it is to know that sorrow and bereavement and suffering are the clouds that come along with God! God cannot come near without clouds, He does not come in clear shining. It is not true to say that God wants to teach us something in our trials; through every cloud He brings, He wants us to unlearn something. His purpose in the cloud is to simplify our belief until our relationship to Him is exactly that of a child — God and my own soul, other people are shadows. Until other people become shadows, clouds and darkness will be mine every now and again. Is the relationship between myself and God getting simpler than ever it has been? There is a connection between the strange providences of God and what we know of Him, and we have to learn to interpret the mysteries of life in the light of our knowledge of God. Unless we can look the darkest, blackest fact full in the face without damaging God’s character, we do not yet know Him. “They feared as they entered the cloud...” Is there anyone “save Jesus only” in your cloud? If so, it will get darker; you must get to the place where there is “no one any more save Jesus only.”
1 August 2026. Lammas.
The crows brought me bread from heaven. Dozens of crows, maybe a hundred. They twirled in eddies of air and guided my eyes to the inverted rainbow inlaid high in the clouds, smiling down on the crabapple copse. Three black vultures glided silently into the south. I sat and stared and prayed. A cuckoo chortled across the field.
Insist on remembering the flashes of grace and reassurance and allow them to lighten your days of unknowing. A little leaven leavens the whole lump.

29 July 2026. Feast of Saints Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, Companions of Our Lord. Full Thunder Moon. The Convert By G. K. Chesterton After one moment when I bowed my head And the whole world turned over and came upright, And I came out where the old road shone white. I walked the ways and heard what all men said, Forests of tongues, like autumn leaves unshed, Being not unlovable but strange and light; Old riddles and new creeds, not in despite But softly, as men smile about the dead The sages have a hundred maps to give That trace their crawling cosmos like a tree, They rattle reason out through many a sieve That stores the sand and lets the gold go free: And all these things are less than dust to me Because my name is Lazarus and I live.
Did that fish you ate have two skins?
The garden of dreams and the burden of dreams.
I met a lion in my parents’ yard. He was gentle and friendly. We frolicked and played in the grass. I clamored over his broad back and sunk my hands into his mane and hugged him. Then I stood facing him and looked into his eyes. He was saddened and reluctant for me to go, but he let me go. I love the lion and the lion loves us.
Sometime ideas, like men, jump up and say 'hello'. They introduce themselves, these ideas, with words. Are they words? These ideas speak so strangely. All that we see in this world is based on someone's ideas. Some ideas are destructive, some are constructive. Some ideas can arrive in the form of a dream. I can say it again: some ideas arrive in the form of a dream.

Great truth and dome-deep thoughts.
I met my aunt's little rescue dog, Angel, yesterday. She has white fur, but because of an enzyme in her saliva, her little feet and any other place she licks becomes brown. She looks like she’s been muddied, but she’s clean.
"How can I be defil’d when I reflect thy image pure? Sweetest the fruit that the worm feeds on & the soul prey'd on by woe, The new wash'd lamb ting'd with the village smoke & the bright swan By the red earth of our immortal river: I bathe my wings."
Take Up Your Cross
From The Inner Voice of Love by Henri J. M. Nouwen Your pain is deep, and it won't just go away. It is also uniquely yours, because it is linked to some of your earliest life experiences. Your call is to bring that pain home. As long as your wounded part remains foreign to your adult self, your pain will injure you as well as others. Yes, you have to incorporate your pain into your self and let it bear fruit in your heart and the hearts of others. This is what Jesus means when he asks you to take up your cross. He encourages you to recognize and embrace your unique suffering and to trust that your way to salvation lies therein. Taking up your cross means, first of all, befriending your wounds and letting them reveal to you your own truth. There is great pain and suffering in the world. But the pain hardest to bear is your own. Once you have taken up that cross, you will be able to see clearly the crosses that others have to bear, and you will be able to reveal to them their own ways to joy, peace, and freedom.
For the first time that I’m aware of, I dreamt of a hippo. She was gentle, cumbersome, and eager to taste the firstfruits of my garden. I felt a bit frantic, trying to protect my goods, but she was persistent. She favored a broad brown angel I saw in a dream a few months ago.
Vision and Reality
From My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers And the parched ground shall become a pool. — Isaiah 35:7 We always have visions before a thing is made real. When we realize that although the vision is real, it is not real in us, then is the time that Satan comes in with his temptations, and we are apt to say it is no use to go on. Instead of the vision becoming real, there has come the valley of humiliation. Life is not as idle ore, But iron dug from central gloom, And batter’d by the shocks of doom To shape and use. God gives us the vision, then He takes us down to the valley to batter us into the shape of the vision, and it is in the valley that so many of us faint and give way. Every vision will be made real if we will have patience. Think of the enormous leisure of God! He is never in a hurry. We are always in such a frantic hurry. In the light of the glory of the vision we go forth to do things, but the vision is not real in us yet; and God has to take us into the valley, and put us through fires and floods to batter us into shape, until we get to the place where He can trust us with the veritable reality. Ever since we had the vision God has been at work, getting us into the shape of the ideal, and over and over again we escape from His hand and try to batter ourselves into our own shape. The vision is not a castle in the air, but a vision of what God wants you to be. Let Him put you on His wheel and whirl you as He likes, and as sure as God is God and you are you, you will turn out exactly in accordance with the vision. Don’t lose heart in the process. If you have ever had the vision of God, you may try as you like to be satisfied on a lower level, but God will never let you.
