i wasn't able to post it yesterday, but here's my belated birthday post for tom :)
and while i'm at it, i don't understand why some people think it's hilarious when celebrities get accused of being gay/trans.
there is so much hatred and paranoia towards queer people that even cishet celebrities aren't safe from homophobia and transphobia. what's funny about that?
there are way too many supposed "allies" who still obviously see men with vaginas and women with penises as a joke/fetish.
just one out of many examples is how the idea of a man having a uterus/being pregnant is seen exclusively as an absurd, hilarious fetish online. even people who claim to support trans people just ignore that that's a real experience that trans men have (often against their will and without the right to abort) and that it's not actually funny at all
i genuinely don't understand what's so fucking funny about someone having a body/biology that's different than what's expected. and anyway, nothing is so funny that it's worth making the trans people in your life feel unsafe with your horrible "jokes".
i can't believe taylor is rumored to be getting married on july 3rd
yet another TC-TS crossover (if it is true, reddit thinks that it is but you never know)

took a super long mental health break bc OCD combined with autistic sense of justice makes social media hell for me- i literally remember every single post that made me mad or upset and i obsess endlessly over it
but now i'm finally medicated and hoping to be able to enjoy this finally
"""tom cruise and ana de armas set to marry in space""" literally why and how do you get this information.
wow i just hit 100 posts. taylor album release season will do that to you i guess lol
bro i keep seeing posts that are like "will this album END taylor swift's career?????" "is this THE WORST thing she's ever written????" "is everyone finally SICK OF HER???!!"
and then i see a post from an OG fan that's like "guys it's like this every time. they claim that the album is terrible and will end her career every. time. there has never been an album that was universally praised, every time there were people going 'this is a wrong move, she should've stuck to (whatever style the previous album was)'. her career is not over because some people don't like this. there are people who don't like it every time, and she's still fine"
like bro. some people not liking it doesn't mean anything. for example, i don't like SC. that's the worst thing about the album to me. but my gripe with the album is not gonna end taylor's career (especially because there's apparently only like 4 people in the world who don't like SC for reasons that are not slut shaming her, and i'm one of them).
and about the "this is cringe" complaints, claiming that her career is over because she said "memes" in a song is like.... even I was aware of the backlash against her "cringe" lyrics in "me!" and "shake it off". and that came from two of her most successful albums, in the public eye and in terms of praise by fans, and folklore is also loved and praised despite "no one was around to tweet it".
she'll be okay, her career is fine i swear. i feel like this "she's OVER!" stuff is just wishful thinking from people who don't like her
also tloas is not my favorite, especially bc like i said i really don't like SC, but i wouldn't be caught dead giving this album the same treatment that i know people gave MY favorite album, ttpd.
people are saying that there's a perspective shift at the end (the key change) of father figure (apparently corroborated by taylor herself?), so i guess i wasn't totally right, and it does sort of change what i thought, like, "this empire belongs to me, leave it with me" at the end represented, to me, the nail in the coffin of someone taking credit for taylor's work and taking it away from her. but her reclaiming her empire at the end makes sense too, and "who covered up your scandals" makes sense too as the perspective of the protegé/taylor, it just hit me harder as a lie like "well i made your career, i kept your reputation good". but it also makes sense as taylor saying "i stood by you, and you stole from me and betrayed me anyway".
and anyway. the rest of the song still isn't her saying that this is who she is. using the mafia metaphor from the song, she is michael, not vito. she's "my dear protegé"/"my dear boy", not "your father figure", for most of the song. just the end with the switch in perspective is her turning it around, with the protegé saying, "i was your father figure", which is think is saying "i made ("fathered"="created/grew"? your success, you didn't make mine, give me back my songs/money/empire"
also it still works as a music industry🤝hollywood song (which makes it a taylor🤝tom song)

i really thought ophelia was gonna be my favorite, but i think that i had the wrong idea of the theme. it wasn't really about the actual story of ophelia, it wasn't trying to be accurate. it's like love story, both of them take a shakespeare story and make it into a lens to see the relationship from, but they're not necessarily tying it strongly to the themes from the original, taylor makes it her own by changing the story and incorporating the relationship she wants to talk about.
i thought that fate of ophelia would be more about not having control, being betrayed, questioning your sanity (maybe not so extreme, but like questioning yourself), grieving, and coming out of it alive. but like i shouldn't have thought that it would be so much about the actual (depressing) subject matter, even with a "but i survived tho" resolution, because it's not ttpd, it's not meant to be long and introspective and poetic. taylor said it's meant to be an upbeat pop album, so it makes sense that it was written more as a song about leaving solitude behind, simplifying the real story (you kinda have to if you want a tight upbeat pop song) and that she also incorporated the rapunzel thing (with the mention of being alone in a tower) because i think she's incorporated fairy tales a lot throughout her work.
so yeah, like i said in another post, the theory videos maybe set up impossible expectations for me. like you can't fulfill all the interesting ideas that might come from the song titles.
i really think that elizabeth taylor is the best song on tloas. it fits the theme (of the title of the song and of the album) so well. not just the lyrics, but the music itself too. it really sounds like hollywood. i think a big part of that is the strings, that reminds me of old hollywood soundtracks. especially that part at about 2:25, it also sort of reminds me of the part in oops i did it again where it sounds like they're playing a part of a movie. which is exactly the perfect vibe for this song obviously, its about a movie star.
and the beat drop with the piano is sooo good and dramatic, really represents the turmoil suggested in the lyrics and the theme.
overall i think the first 4 songs are the best, and especially elizabeth taylor really is the perfect song for this album.
i wish the music video was releasing at like noon so that people from timezones that are not eastern time would actually be able to watch it (at a reasonable time)
like why does it have to be at 7 PM eastern time... can't it be at like 1 PM or even in the morning... do they realize how inconvenient some of the releases are for people who live in a timezone that's UTC plus something
the only good part is not having to wake up at midnight for album releases lol. but when something is at a normal (not midnight or something like that) time in the US, but it's past early afternoon US time, then it's really rough for me bc of the huge time difference
father figure is growing on me more and more (and more and more i actually love it)
the first listen i didn't really feel what i feel about it now, because it just seemed comedic to me, because come on putting the word "dick" in a song makes it seem funny
and then i listened to the clean version (btw from the ones i've listened to, the clean versions are seamlessly changed as always, really great), and then i listened again and again and again and the explicit version started growing on me too bc i really understood the song
also ttpd will always be my king and my #1, however father figure might be joining the ranks of certain ttpd songs specifically as a perfect tom🤝taylor song
come onnn like the manipulation in this song... the hollywood thing that makes him (the narrator, who is NOT taylor, this is taylor playing someone else, its obvious, this is not her saying she is/wants to be/ would be the father figure, come on guys this isn't The Man) sound like he's pretending to be an agent mixed with the mob boss thing (i'll kill you if you're not loyal).... the "i made your career" attitude..... come ON.... the way that "you left to fulfill your dreams" is framed as a slight against him, as a betrayal... come ONNNN
both of them have dealt with many people talking to them like this, especially early in their careers (i mean i think we all think of one specific person for each of them as the guys who took advantage of them and screwed up their careers, but they definitely both knew a LOT of people who wanted to use them, with the industry they work in you can't escape it)
also the key change at the end woowww. made me need to catch my breath fr. and "whose portrait's on the mantle, who covered up your scandals"???? DUDE that's what i mean when i say manipulation... "i did all this for you, and you leave like this"... and i think it's clear that we're supposed to take him saying all the generous things he did as fake, i mean come on are we supposed to forget "this love is pure profit" from a minute ago??
"father figure is the new the man, father figure is her telling us to call her daddy lol" NO! FATHER FIGURE IS THE NEW MY TEARS RICOCHET!
the man is like "i wish i wasn't treated unfairly by the public, i wish i could get away with things". it's NOT like that with father figure!!!! Father figure is NOT aspirational!!! it's her imitating how people have talked to her!!! it's about people in the industry who take advantage of you!!!
THE "I/ME" IN FATHER FIGURE DOES NOT REFER TO TAYLOR OR WHO SHE WANTS TO BE! Obviously!!
man now i'm thinking about whether i like ophelia more than opalite... i had really high expectations for ophelia, as like the most ttpd song. based on the title and also the piano at the beginning really had me like yeahhhh this is exactly what i wanted (and then the piano disappeared, rip)
but it makes sense for her not to dwell on the actual story of ophelia, it makes sense that it's more of a "man i'm grateful for what i have now" song instead of a "things sucked before" song
something i realized that i think is kinda weird is that the point in the song is that she was alone and then he found her. and not that she was wronged but he's right for her. bc the point of ophelia is that she was treated badly by him and then he dismissed her, not that she was sad that she was alone as a fact by itself
nitpicks really though, i just had different expectations bc of the story of ophelia
i think i have to listen again to have a clearer idea
