Clarke wakes up sometime before dawn and realizes Lexa is still asleep beside her. For once, the Commander isn't carrying the weight of twelve clans on her shoulders. Clarke spends a few quiet minutes memorizing the version of Lexa the rest of the world never gets to see.
Somehow you seem smaller when you're asleep, the muscles no longer knotted into tight balls beneath your skin. I can run my fingers down your back and find the tattoos placed there when you were far too young. Some of them have stories I know by heart because you've told them to me on nights when sleep wouldn't come. Others remain mysteries, pieces of yourself you've kept tucked away behind walls that even now haven't completely fallen.
For now, all I can do is trace each line and circle and hear your voice as I follow the rough edge of a scar across your skin. I wonder if you still remember every battle that left its mark or if they've all blended together after so many years of carrying more responsibility than anyone ever should.
The morning light catches against the dark ink on your skin and for a moment I find myself trying to memorize it all. The warmth beneath my fingertips, the steady rise and fall of your breathing, and the rare peace on your face that only seems to appear when nobody is asking something from you.
Maybe that's why I find myself watching you instead of trying to sleep.
The rest of the world sees a Commander. They see strength and certainty and someone capable of carrying the weight of twelve clans on her shoulders. But lying here beside you, all I can see is the girl beneath it all, the one the world demanded too much from long before she was ever ready to give it.
I let my fingers trace one final line of ink across your skin before settling beside you again, content to spend a few more minutes with the version of you that so few people ever get to know.

The summer heat had set deep into Polis. The nights had become restless for many as they couldn’t find an escape, even after the sun had faded.
Clarke and Lexa were no exception. Sleep had become difficult to find in the thick summer air, and when Lexa had quietly suggested escaping the city for a few hours, Clarke hadn't needed much convincing.
The place Lexa led her to sat on a hill overlooking Polis. It wasn't grand or impressive. If anything, it was surprisingly ordinary for a Commander. But as Lexa explained that she had come here as a child to learn the stories hidden among the stars, Clarke found herself looking at the sky with renewed curiosity.
She knew the constellations. She knew the stories people had told long before the bombs fell. What she didn't know were the stories that had survived after.
Lexa laid out a large fur and laid down beside Clarke as the stars danced before their eyes in the clear night sky.
"See those seven stars?" Clarke asked, pointing toward the sky. "That's the Big Dipper. It's part of a larger constellation called Ursa Major. The Great Bear."
"A bear?" Lexa asked, continuing to study the stars above them.
Clarke laughed softly. "I know. It doesn't really look like one. But people have been seeing a bear there for thousands of years."
Lexa followed her finger. "The Seven Watchers."
Clarke glanced over at her. "The Seven Watchers?"
Lexa nodded. "Seven warriors who gave their lives protecting the clans during a brutal winter. The spirits placed them in the sky so they could continue watching over the living."
Clarke looked back toward the sky, searching through the stars until she found the familiar shape.
"That one is Cygnus," she said, lifting a hand toward the heavens. "The Swan."
Lexa followed her gaze. "The Wayfinder."
Clarke smiled. "I should have known you had a different name for it."
"We have different names for many things.” Lexa replied simply
"I've noticed."
A small smile tugged at Lexa's lips before Clarke pointed again.
"The stars form the shape of a bird if you know where to look. Wings stretched out on either side."
Lexa studied the sky for a moment. "I can see it."
Clarke turned onto her side to look at her.
"So what's the story behind the Wayfinder?"
The smile faded into something softer.
"A traveler left her village to see the world beyond her people. She crossed forests, followed rivers, and wandered farther than anyone thought possible."
Clarke listened quietly.
"When she finally decided to return home, she realized she no longer recognized the paths she had once known."
Lexa's eyes drifted toward the constellation.
"Each night those stars appeared above her. She followed them until she found her way back to her people."
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
"So it led her home.”
Lexa glanced toward her. "No, it led her to the person she was meant to find. That became her home."
Clarke looked over at Lexa, who was still staring up at the night sky. There was nothing to suggest her words had meant anything beyond the story she had been telling.
That didn't stop Clarke's heart from pounding against her chest.
The warm summer breeze shifted around them as Clarke looked back toward the stars.
CLEXA: They're caught in a storm halfway back to Polis. By the time they find shelter they're both soaked through, shivering, and entirely too aware of how close they're sitting.
"There isn't a chance we make it back to Polis before this storm hits!" Clarke yelled over the rising wind.
Lexa glanced back, dark hair whipping across her face.
"Then we find shelter until it passes!" she called, pointing toward a clearing where the dark mouth of a cave cut into the hillside.
Clarke followed without argument as the first heavy drops began to fall.
Thunder cracked overhead. By the time they reached the cave, the sky had opened completely.
Rain hammered against the forest outside, turning the path behind them into a blur of mud and water. The cave wasn't deep, but it was enough.
Clarke stepped inside and pushed damp hair from her eyes as another roll of thunder echoed through the trees.
Clarke's jacket was soaked through. She shrugged it off and draped it over a large rock near the entrance of the cave before wrapping her arms around herself against the chill that immediately settled over her skin.
Across the cave, Lexa was already crouched beside a small pile of twigs and leaves, flint in hand.
It only took a few strikes before tiny embers appeared among the tinder. Clarke watched as Lexa carefully fed the flame until it began to dance, casting a warm orange glow against the cave walls and pushing back some of the cold that had followed them inside.
Clarke walked over and sat close to the fire, holding her hands out to reclaim some warmth in her fingers.
Lexa watched her from the opposite side of the fire. The light made her green eyes look like gems that had been hidden for centuries in the cave. Despite the growing warmth of the fire, water still dripped from the ends of her dark hair and Clarke could see the slight tension in her shoulders as she tried to ignore the cold.
"Just come here."
Lexa crossed the small distance between them without question and settled at Clarke's side. Clarke slipped an arm around her waist and pulled her closer.
“Body heat.” Clarke said simply, resting her head on Lexa’s shoulder.
“Clarke,” Lexa’s voice could have been lost to the storm outside, but Clarke felt it like a shock through her spine right to the base of her skull.
She looked up into those green eyes and smiled softly, despite the chill still lingering under her skin.
Lexa leaned in and pressed a soft kiss against her lips. It lasted only a moment before she pulled back, close enough that Clarke could still feel her breath.
