2015/16 vs 2022. The first painting was done as an art trade with my best friend. They made me a blanket in return. Over the years I’ve wanted to try to redo the painting and I still want to, but I wasn’t sure I could. If you’re close to the painting you can see all the little white spots that never got paint because I didn’t know what an under layer was 😂 but it’s okay. I’ve always be proud of this painting and I’m happy to hold on to it while my friend is out of the country. But I’ve been looking between this painting and my most recent Ghostie painting and even though I stopped painting for years, I’ve still learned and improved. From watching other artists I’ve learned the importance of under layers and color theory. I’ve learned how to keep colors in the same palette so everything looks cohesive. I’ve learned to work through the ugly stage and I’ve learned to stop before a painting becomes overworked. All that just from watching other artists. So even though I stopped painting and drawing in general for so many years, I still learned. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished in the month of October. Do you ever get lost staring at the moon? Have you ever just taken the time to enjoy its light? The soft glow it casts on the clouds as they float past making the stars dance in and out of view? The moon brings me so much piece, that’s probably why I gravitate toward it in jewelry and home decor. It’s also a good reminder of constants change and that it’s okay to embrace that change. Healing part 2. There are things that I do that have come to light in the past year that aren’t totally healthy. Distancing myself from grief, pain, inconveniences, uncomfortable situations…because I’m afraid of anxiety/panic attacks, I’m afraid of disappointment, I’m afraid of failure. Like I said last time my art took a massive hit due to my depression and anxiety. Every single time I picked up a pencil or pen I would hear a voice in my head saying I failed. “Why aren’t you using your degree?” “Have you tried selling your art?” The list goes on. I’m not using my degree, that is true and I’m trying to figure out where to go from here. But my art was always meant to be a form of telling a story, I wanted to share my characters with the world, I wanted to tell their stories. I loved coming up with different characters, figuring out their histories, what they wear, how they act. But I lost that joy when everything suddenly had to be a way of making money. If I didn’t record it or share it to make money, it was worthless. I tried to just make stuff for content, but I couldn’t, it stressed me out. I told myself to set up a graphic design business and do that, but I would panic and shut down and I got nowhere with it. So in my healing I’m getting back to the basics of what I wanted to do. I wanted to share my illustrations and my stories. Even just little glimpses of what worlds my characters lived in. Do I still wish to one day live off of doing only art? Yeah, sure, who wouldn’t want that? But I have realized that in order for me to produce art for myself right now my actual job can’t be creative and that’s okay. I’m not stuck, I’m in a journey, and where that journey takes me is gonna be for the better. I’ve learned that it’s better to take a break and work on starting over than slowly feel like you’re losing your mind in an endless cycle. My brain has had scary thoughts lately, but now, now I feel freer. Process of Healing Part 1. Hello everyone, I like to think that I’m back, but I’m not sure if I am yet. I’m still taking things slow, but I did want to give y’all an update on life. Life has been crazy for a while now and mentally I have not been okay. I’ve gone through a lot of changes and everything since 2018/2019 and I haven’t handled everything in the best way and it’s been taking a massive toll on me. I’m not quite ready to go into detail, but incase you didn’t notice the one thing that took the biggest hit was my art. I lost my love for it, I lost my desire to do anything, it because a chore to do when I tried to do it for fun. I felt miserable already because of my mental health and even more so because of the lack of art. I tried so many times to pick it back up and get back into it, but eventually something would happen and I would go back to feeling miserable and worthless. But I’m healing now, I’m learning, I’m adapting. And I’ve learned that I can draw things that bring me joy and they can be easy to draw, it doesn’t matter if I draw the same thing over and over for now, because I’m healing and eventually I’ll branch out and draw other things. That leads me to today. I have been sketching a lot of ghosts. Floating ghosts. Ghosts with legs. Ghosts. And I love all of them. I’ve filled several spreads in my sketchbook with them. They’re perfect. But besides sketching I’ve also developed the urge to paint, so now I’m painting my ghosts. I have more ideas planned out for the rest of my canvases and they all involve ghosts.
