Last Saturday was my final presentation of 'Fragile Bodies: Broken Bonds & Traumatising Treaties' in the Body Architecture course by Studio Filippo Nassetti at PAACADEMY, for which I have been exploring Rhino & Grasshopper and Midjourney & chatGPT. These 3D-modelling practices feel like the artisan craftsmanship of my research project, wherein I can totally dive into the emotional complexities of bodily integrated systems from a 'maker' perspective. #phd #bodily #integrated #systems It was a very steep learning curve for me during weekly classic 4-hour trainings online, and another discovery that I am not a person made to follow design briefs made by others. Still, that doesn't matter now anymore, I am not a designer pur sang. This course has given me the confidence to continue with mixing & mashing up 3D-programs in my spare time, and in a way another return to practices of making. I even miss my online classmates a bit, who are spread all over the world, and with whom I shared quite some Saturday evenings in the last few months. Today, I enjoyed original ideas from students on bodily interactions, when they explored the idea of dancing in XR. Starting off with a mini-lecture on Game Feel (by Steve Swink), I let them explore & prototype and presentations led to doing a pirouette, crawling (a little bit) with the body, sweeping arms, exchanging body parts, silhouette & postures playing out. #digital #physical #craftsmanship #design #space #bodily #integrated #systems #VR #AR #XR It’s nice to see them & me evolve towards a design space that supports the exploration of interactions with the body, something that is not easy to create amongst students. I need to open up as well to them in order to make them feel safe in moving around with their bodies, and I think that is one of the best things I learn by doing. The quality of bodily interactions is essential for designing future products that deal with body enhancements and pervasive forms of technology. It is nice to have these kinds of educational practices besides my phd-efforts. It’s enjoyable and experimental and comfortable now most of the time. And I get to play 90s music videos again ;) which shows the history of the 'digitally every thing'. I love music videos!
