The "bare minimum" will get you unbelievably far when visiting a foreign country. I've traveled to Spain, Norway, France, Greece, Croatia, a handful of Middle Eastern countries, and lived in Bahrain for 18 months. Most of these countries have a good grip of the English language (it's Bahrain's default for business), and while I might not have any or only know the "bare minimum" of theirs, I put forth the effort to speak it when I could. The natives appreciated my efforts, with one lady in France being actually impressed I, an American, had ordered my meal in French.
