TINY FEET PATTER AWAY next to his thundering leather clad steps, little hand gripping tight to calloused fingers, hands swinging as they walk. His son talks gushes happily about what was done at playgroup that day, backpack bouncing. Theyâre cutting through the park to stop for some ice-cream before heading home. When his son elaborates on art hour, in which he decided to draw grandpa, Aiden chuckles, makes to ruffle his sonâs blond locks, AS GOLD AS HIS FATHER, before stopping to point to the woman seated at the park bench. âThatâs great, bud, I canât wait tâsee it. Thereâs Mommy over there, yâsee? Youâs wanna run ahead anâ Iâll get the ice-cream? You wanted chocolate, right?â But his child doesnât answer, already sprinting âcross neatly trimmed green grass to meet his mother, and Aiden can only laugh, ââŚI guess thatâs chocolate fâeveryone, then.â
âOh hello, little man, whereâs your Daddy?â Anna quickly takes her little golden son into her arms and plants a big red-lipped kiss on his little cheek. The boy giggles and cuddles up to his mother, happily discussing art class and his picture. When Anna sees it, sheâs not sure if itâs Aidenâs father or hers but both would love it anyway. Let the two old men argue over who is their grandsonâs favorite, Annaâs more concerned about where the bigger ray of sunshine known as Daddy went.  âDid Daddy go get you ice cream?â A nod, a point. âOh now I see him. Be sure to thank Daddy when he gets here, okay?â Another nod as he cuddles up to his mother even more.
⍠â... A wealthy wolf likes to buy his toys But he really is just one of the boys. If you've got something for which he's cravin', It sure is good that he's been savin'. Be a fan, give his cheek a peck But get his autograph on a cashier's check!
Yeah, I never met a wolf who didn't love to howl! No, I never met a man who wasn't on the prowl. Even if that wolf's just a grey old goat He still will make a nice fur coat! Yeah, I never met a wolf who didn't love to howl! â âŞ

That moment when a Thomas Sharpe follows you and you donât understand whhhhhhhy.
Eyes TWINKLE as soon as the woman takes her first sip. She imagines the crimson spreading from her lips and down her chin. Never once has Rebecca felt so compelled to watch someone DIE since her MOTHERâs last breath; one she heaved with the axe encrusted into her SKULL. She wishes Anna would chug large gulps of the brew and ASK for more. But of course she wonât. Sheâs DIFFICULT â the little bitch. Rebeccaâs never felt threatened by Aidenâs concubines until Anna and she HATES this feeling tugging into her belly; how it urges her to reach out across the table and wrap her fingers around her throat and squeeze squeeze SQUEEZE until her eyes budge and her lips go a sickly shade of BLUE which Rebecca would be glad to lay a kiss of death upon.
Instead Rebecca remains cold even in her smiles. Sweet but sickly sweet. The kind which infects your teeth with cavities and kills your nerves. âItâs been left to its ownâ, Rebecca admits with a sip of her own; a delicate gesture.
âI admit, Iâm slightly embarrassed you have to see my old home like this. I hope that, in time, it will be repaired and brought back to its former glory. Once Aidenâs inventions take off, it will only be a question of time.â She does believe this, at the very least. That is, sadly, the only truth sheâs let slip past her lips since sheâs entered the room.Â
And so she returns to the lies, lets them slither upon her serpent tongue: âA new manuscript? Aiden has told me youâre quite talented. Would you mind I take a peek?â
Anna bites her tongue to keep from spilling her actual thoughts on the house. that it was a rotten fester on the landscape and should probably just be left to sink. From what sheâd seen of the places that needed repairs... it would cost much less to soak the house in kerosene and set it ablaze, and arguably there was the insurance money. Did the English even have insurance? Surely so...
âIâm sure it will soon be on par with itâs former glory.â Anna smiled, all potential sarcastic tones or the sweet stink of a lie absent from her words.
When Rebecca inquires after her manuscript, something in Anna gets utterly defensive and her body tightens. It was something she only shared with Aiden and her work-in-progress was one of the rare few things Rebecca hadnât, for lack of a better term, butted her way into when she was uninvited. Like a child who is unwilling to share, Anna swipes up the few pages sheâs been working on and though she doesnât bring them to her chest, she keeps them out of Rebeccaâs grasp or eye line. âI... you wouldnât understand whatâs going on in the story. And itâs still very rough. I was hoping to get Aidenâs opinion on it when he gets tired of tinkering upstairs.â
Speaking of upstairs... âSo... the attic was your nursery? I suppose it was much nicer then than it is now. Though Aiden has shown me all his toys and inventions. Theyâre wonderful.â

Rain pellets. A rumble in the distance. It amuses Rebecca how sombre her home thrives in storms â for it has not once been bathed in glory or happiness even in the sun but for HER moments with Aiden. Moments she is obliged to share with his new wife. Rebecca is usually unphased by the prospect but in this particular case, thereâs a volcano within dictating she should take Annaâs death to a new level. Fast. But painful. Aiden never once reacted so vividly to the concubines and his sister is most certainly unhappy at the prospect.Â
She is the perfect picture of civility as she strolls into the library with a silver tray upon which rests two steaming cups of tea and a kettle. One porcelain cup for her, one for Anna, laced with a little Thallium. Tasteless. Odorless. Sheâd be none the wiser, and the chemical not so quick to act as arsenic, although Rebecca HAS pondered.Â
She takes a seat across from her guest, offering the cup before crossing her leg and taking a sip of her own, all sunny smiles and absolute kindness in contrast to the darkness around them. â Here you are, darling. I trust youâve settled down comfortably by now?â
She finds the house to be cold and inhospitable, which mirrored so well in Rebecca in just the slightest of moments. She can see the edge of irritation when she asks for things or tries to pull Aiden from his machine or workshop for quality time with her new husband. The moments are short, but the stiffening of her frame or the coldness in her eye is noticeable and worrying. If it were all the time, at least she would be a little less suspicious, but the kindness... and her motherâs warning...
âMy child, when the time comes... beware of Crimson Peak.â
The words echo in her head as she looks down at her manuscript, making it hard to focus on the characters and the story. Sheâs just as dedicated to her art as Aiden is to his creations. It was something they bonded over during their courtship, and she wanted to finish these last few chapters to have his opinion. He seemed to be the only man whoever read her work -save her father- and gave it the chance it deserved. The chance she deserved. Her work was slow though, with the creaking and groaning of the house distracting her,
And now Rebecca. Annaâs lips tighten for a moment as Rebecca invades with tea -always damned tea- before she accepts it with an easy smile and takes a single sip before placing it aside in exile. âAs comfortable as one can be in a house that makes more noise than Aidenâs machine outside... I suppose Iâm used to a quiet home, one that hasnât been around long enough to come to life as this one has.â
âYouâre a bad banana with a greasy black peel.â
âI love How the Grinch Stole Christmas, donât judge.â
âItâs not even Thanksgiving yet, Miles.â
He may aswell be a dog with the way his ears prick up at the sound of skinny dipping â Aiden finds himself following her like a lost puppy, ever obedient, and his leather jacket with all itâs pins and studs, something heâs so RARELY seen without, is shedded like a snakeâs second skin, dropped almost instantly, and he begins to remove his white t-shirt underneath it. âWhat, anâ leave you tâswim all on yâown? What if yâneeded someone tâcarry yâout? You always need someone keepinâ an eye on yâwhile youâre in the water.â Excuses, excuses! Of course heâs coming in after her, heâs just trying on a little humor, and throws in a wink for good measure. âAnyway, I heard the oceanâs not so cold this timeâa year.â
She giggled as she watched her boyfriend strip off his signature jacket and make excuses to not sound so eager to join her in the cool waters. She hadnât thought of skinny dipping when she put on her outfit for this date, but she was thankful a date with Aiden usually meant wearing the least amount of clothes possible. If only for convenience. She learned long ago trying to keep track of all her clothes after a night with her tall Texan sweet-talking greaser was far too difficult to bother with. Shedding her dress, she balled it up and threw it at her boyfriend to put with his clothes, and when his back was turned she shed her undergarments and slingshot them at him as well. Quickly she submerged herself in the water and nearly instantly regretted it. âFffffucccck.â Her teeth shattered and she wrapped her arms around her chest. âAideeeeen, âm cold. Itâs cold! Warm me up!â
