It was so incredibly rare that Dorian was able to walk around without someone tailing him, be it crazy fans or his father, and it was honestly pretty boring. It would've been more interesting if his father had given him money to buy snacks and drinks with, but he wasn't trusted with literally anything so he was just sitting on a bench staring out into the ocean.
He wanted to go for a swim.
But his clothes would get wet, and he has a concert soon.
But the water looked so inviting and cold.
Damn now he wanted something cold to eat, like ice cream.

"Are you lost?" A voice came from behind the boy, muffled yet mechanical all at once.
Briar wasn't much of a socializer, preferring to stay within his home with his wife. It was just meant to be a quick grocery trip, he even intended to buy Raven a few flowers to liven up her workshop, but at the sight of the smaller boy, he couldn't help but feel nagged by the voice of his wife in his head beckoning him to talk more.
And now here he was.
"You shouldn't sit too close to the edge of the shore. The water levels are too high for a swim, unfortunately. The currents will sweep you away."
Probably not the kindest thing to say to someone who looked like a child, but he was trying his best; awkward as Briar is.
“I'm not lost, I assure you. And the water levels aren't too much of a problem for someone like me.” What siren couldn't swim in unruly waters, after all? But still, actually swimming might be an issue.
“I was just taking a break from walking. I didn't think it'd be so hot out.”
"The weather does feel a little unnatural today, doesn't it?" Briar shifted the bags in his arms, feeling stiff and awkward. If Raven were here now, she'd surely laugh at him. He cleared his throat, attempting to dislodge the lump he felt forming.
"Would you, uh...care to come with me and find some shade? I know of a place that sells frozen custard, if you're a sweets person." The suggestion felt forced in a way that was also sincere. He really needed to go out more.
“Sweets and shade sound delightful right now actually. Except I don't have any money.” He really didn't want to explain that he was not allowed financial freedom, so he just kept quiet about that part
“Do you want help with those bags?”
"Don't worry about money. I'll pay." Briar glanced down at his groceries, adjusting his weight on his legs. He shook his head, his gas mask giving a quiet, mechanical whir.
"No need, I can carry them. I'm just restless, talking isn't my strong suit. If you're interested in that frozen custard, I suggest you come along, before the afternoon sun decides to vaporize the earth."
Dorian looks hesitant, looking from the shoreline to Briar before standing up and clasping his hands behind his back politely.
“I'll try to pay you back someway, I promise.” Maybe a scale or two? Or maybe he could just scrape off an entire section... Father did say that his scales were invaluable.

If the Headmage were to find out about it, I don't even want to imagine what he'd have to say for how irresponsible it is. Would you like to elaborate on what happened? Or do you want me to start guessing?
“I had a horrible dysphoric episode and punched it. I cleaned the glass afterwards don't worry.”

Of all the things Vanitas expected to run into today, Dorian was not one of them— or more specifically, this version of Dorian. He remembered this stage of his friend, mostly from before those two years he underwent the shifting.
As Vanitas studied him, he noticed that he looked incredibly confused— frightened too. Perhaps whatever magic had done this, had returned Dorian's mind to what it was at the age too...
Vanitas made a split second decision, shifting himself to be younger, smaller— the version of him that this Dorian would find familiar. He could ease him into the changes.
Safe to say, Dorian looks so relieved to see Vanitas, running towards him and hugging him like a barnacle clinging to the side of a ship.
“Vani! I dunno where I am, why is this place so big? Why am I on land?” The Dorian of today would never be this chatty, he'd had his talkativeness trained out of him, but ten year old Dorian still had that childlike innocence that made everyone around him coo.
Vanitas hugged him back, wrapping his arms around the little Dorian comfortingly. "Its a really long story..." How could he even break the news properly? "Can you tell me the last thing you remember before you appeared here?"
Despite the odd circumstances, Vanitas thought it was rather nice to hear Dorian talk so freely once again.
“It's all kind of fuzzy? I remember that Father was talking to me about something and now I'm here.” Dorian clings on a little closer. He's always been afraid of his father.
“I'm going to be in so much trouble when I go home.”
"No you won't" Vanitas promised "You'll be okay, you don't need to go back to him anytime soon. I can protect you- I will, okay? I know a few new tricks now"
Dorian didn't look fully convinced, but nodded nonetheless.
“Okay. I trust you. But, won't people be looking for me?”
"Ah... not really. We don't need to worry about that while we're here" Vanitas assured, though he kept his words vauge. "Just... follow me"
“..Okay.”

While Pierre is minding his business, likely studying or something else, a tap on his shoulder directs his attention to one of the other Pomefiore second-years. Dorian Auclair, if he remembered right? A mer who was sorted into Pomefiore alongside Pierre and Hatton.
"Can I bother you for a moment? I just have a question about something." He asks softly, head slightly tilted as he waits patiently for Pierre's reply.

*His notebook sat wide open on his lap, the page half sprawled with barely legible cursive writing, as he shifted himself to face the other second year. He couldn't quite pinpoint where in particular he recognised him from other than being in the same year and dorm.* Hm? Hello, Dorian, right? *He smiled at him. It wasn't every day that someone came to ask him something, or talk to him at all, really. Mostly... Poisyn would. No, no, do not start thinking about that right now.* You wouldn't be bothering me at all, don't worry, this *he gestured to his book* is just scribbles, nothing important- ask away!
“Can you pretty please help me on today's assignment from professor Trein? Most of the lecture went over my head and I can never seem to grasp what he's saying.” Useless siren, indeed. The only thing Dorian was good at is singing and breaking mirrors. Hopefully Pierre didn't see the shattered mirror in the bathroom this morning or notice the bandage wrapped around Dorian's left hand.
“I'm horrible at History of Magic. I never know what is going on.”
Hm? *Pierres eyes seemed to light up a bit at the subjects mention, instantly reaching for his bag.* You came to the right person, then-! I've had this chapter studied before Professor Trein even introduced it, haha... Though I don't blame you. *He said while taking a heavily filled notebook onto his lap.* It can be hard to follow along with so much information, and sometimes Professor Treins expanded discussions can be confusing when following the chronological timeline- We were studying the past relationships between human and fae and the effect it had on the expansion of magic through genetics, remember? He said we would be spending a few lectures on it since we would have to go through the entirety of the war in Briar Valley between them and the Kingdom of- ah, would you like to sit down? I can show you my notes and try to talk you through it as much as you need-! *He gestured to the space beside him, still smiling at the other student.*
“Right, I do remember that bit, at least. Your help is quite appreciated.” Dorian sat down in the space offered, rather dainty now that he and Pierre were sitting side by side.
Would you ever believe that an undersea celebrity didn't know any of the curriculum? It was more likely than you think, really.
No need to be so formal about it, I love talking about this stuff. I hope to study it when I graduate so it's always good to revise these things regularly for me haha... *He laughed awkwardly before flicking open his notebook.* We should probably get started, I'm sure you don't want to hear me babbling about that... *He settled on the page, quickly scanning it and turning to the other student.* Right, so we start here in Briar Valley in... *He pointed to the cursively written timeline on the page, motioning his finger over an area of dates to signify the period he was discussing.* Around this time, there had been many rumours that the reigning Queen, Queen Maleficia's, daughter, Princess Meleanor and the power that she possessed in the kingdom. Specifically when it came to magical abilities, the Draconias were - and still are, by demonstration - very powerful people and held some of the highest status' for magic in the entirety of Twisted Wonderland. Briar Valley at the time, and from what I've heard it's still very much like this today, ran largely on the magic sources of the people rather than the more industrialised ways of living that non-fae predominant countries had embraced. And hence, more magic equalled higher status, and the Draconia's ruled over and were highly respected for that reason. However a rumour spread among neighbouring countries of the Princess' power, not only in what would now be considered a political sense, but in a magical sense too. Her power came from a magestone that was known to be incredibly powerful and that was believed to be encrusted somewhere to her - possibly her armour or a weapon, though it's not quite known for certain. All we know is that the magestone looked a little something like this. *He pointed to a printed out photo of an emerald green orb.* Pretty cool, right? You wouldn't think that it would be so desirable by just looking at it...
“Maybe not to most, but I greatly enjoy collecting shiny rocks and treasures from the water. It's just an odd little hobby I have. But again, every rumor has some level of truth.” Dorian could really only think of a few things right now and it was mostly "wow Pierre is really pretty" "fuck my hand hurts" and "I kind of want to steal the gem."
He was in fact paying attention, just a lot of things were happening at once for him.
Is that so? *He looked over at him, intruiged at the sudden fact.* That's cool, I was always more interested in seeing physical places than the smaller aspects like that, but surprisingly you're the second person I've met to have an interest in that sort of thing... well, a bit different, but not majorly-!
“Hatton too, right?” Dorian asks with a slight tilt of his head.
“Sometimes I bother him to give him shiny things I find and polish. I think he's gotten tired of me doing it.”
Yeah, I'm not surprised you two know each other! *He laughed awkwardly, brushing his hand along the side of his notebook repeatedly in an odd change of motion.* He's just like that with people, or at least I think he is, he's the same with me, except a lot less tolerable, depending on the day...
“I think he's convinced I'm trying to flaunt something. So I've kind of been giving him space.” Dorian wisely doesn't comment on the change in Pierre's tone, instead he redirects the topic back to the assignment.
“Anyway, you were saying something about the rumors surrounding Princess Maleanor? The magestone, is there anymore information about it?”
Flaunt something..? Huh... I can't say I'm too surprised... *Pierre snapped back to focus, slamming his hand against the book and turning to his study partner with a smile. He wasn't used to people asking him questions about history, much less to keep interest in it, and his excitement may have shown through a bit too much, but he didn't have it in him to pay any mind to it right now.* Oh- right! I'll get to the rumours aspect once I've answered your question-! There are some ideas of where it may be, if it still exists. Some historians seem to think that the Draconias have it, others think that it may have been lost or taken during the war, but ultimately no one of our time would be able to recognise it even if it were found, at least not easily as the Princess Glow. It's complicated, no one really knows... As for Princess Meleanor, rumours spread of what this magestone could do and what she planned to do with it. She was next in line to rule Briar Valley, after all. And a kingdom that relied on magic along with a Princess who supposedly held such high amounts of it, it would have in theory made the kingdom a powerhouse against others. And so, a neighbouring human kingdom began questioning the uses of that magic and how it could be used for their own benefit. Their king was unwell, you see, and they wondered whether or not the magic in this magestone would be able to heal him.
“I'm not at all surprised. Do forgive me, but humans have usually been the instigators in most historical wars. It is unfortunate that the magestone can't be found, though.”
No need to apologise, anyone who has even touched a history book or has any ounce of common sense could see that it's almost always a human issue... it is though, unfortunate, I mean, I've always wondered what it might look like had it survived....
“It's all we really can do unless someone magically finds it.”
I suppose... I can't help but wonder though, if it did survive, where would someone even begin looking for it? I mean surely once it left Briar Valley, it could have been handed around anywhere, and the kingdom thats royal family took it no longer exists, so it would be like finding a needle in a haystack...
“But more obsure things have been found, right? Even so, it may be best for the magestone to remain lost. Who knows what will happen to it.”
That's true I suppose, I guess it just depends on who is searching for it and where they're looking... *Pierre looked at him curiously, not having thought about that part.* That... actually makes sense. If they took advantage of it so easily back then, who says they won't do it again if it's found? Even the people looking for it... yeah no you're right, as interesting as it is to think about, it would probably be better left unfound...
“A lot of the times, it's better for lost things to stay lost.” Dorian nods his agreement, before tilting his head a little.
“It is a very pretty gem though.”
It is... I know it's better left undiscovered but a part of me still wants to see it at least once... if they could keep it well preserved and properly taken care of... *He sighed, turning back to the book.* If it means it's better kept, then I think I'll be fine without seeing it, but it's like one of those dreams you have that you know won't come true, y'know? It's still good to have them... Anyway, where were we?
“After the death of princess Maleanor, I believe.” Dorian offers a smile before jotting down some notes onto the journal he brought with him. He was glad to have found Pierre, his help is wonderful.
Ah- right! Thank you! *He smiled in return. He was happy to see Dorian writing... not that it was any of his concern, of course! But he had never actually spoken to someone who was willing to pay so much attention to what he was talking about, much less when it came to history and even more to engage so much, too, it was much different than others he had attempted to study with before, enjoyably so.* So, after her death, it's believed that the Princess Glow was taken by the Knight of Dawn on behalf of Prince Henrick- they were the son and son-in-law of the ill King, by the way. The Knight of Dawn was married to the Kings daughter, Princess Leia. They took the Princess Glow and somehow it was used to heal the King, there are rumours of how it may have been used but nothing is set in stone, in our time they're purely myths. But with all of that inbetween, there was something important that came of the war besides the Princess Glow, or the loss of it. They wanted to use him as a pet to ride on... *He started looking around a bit frantically.* I am sincerely hoping that no Diasomnia student is around to hear this right now considering who I'm talking about is their Housewarden... Regardless, they failed because the egg was saved in an escape of the Castle, I believe it was General Vanro- *He groaned, an awkward tension filling him at the use of such familiar names around the school in such a formal setting.* When he was a General, it's believed to be Vice-Housewarden Vanrouge who managed to help the prince get out of the wreckages, trusted by Princess Meleanor herself, and some people theorise that that's the reason he's here in Night Raven College now...
“I see. I can see why that might be the case, and it's quite sweet if you think about it. Taking care of his princess' son...” If only all families were like that, huh?
“It's horrible what they wanted to do with Housewarden Draconia, and I'm glad that it didn't happen. And ah-” Dorian gets up for a moment to look around the library, there are a few Diasomnia students, as well as a weirdly pale boy sitting with a wolf dressed in pink at another table.
“There are a few Diasomnia students, but they're all absorbed in their own conversations. The closest one to us would be the short guy with the flowers. I don't remember his name. He's with that wolf who really likes pink.” He says once he returns to his seat, smiling a little.

And hence, more magic equalled higher status, and the Draconia's ruled over and were highly respected for that reason. However a rumour spread among neighbouring countries of the Princess' power, not only in what would now be considered a political sense, but in a magical sense too. Her power came from a magestone that was known to be incredibly powerful and that was believed to be encrusted somewhere to her - possibly her armour or a weapon, though it's not quite known for certain. All we know is that the magestone looked a little something like this. *He pointed to a printed out photo of an emerald green orb.* Pretty cool, right? You wouldn't think that it would be so desirable by just looking at it...
“Maybe not to most, but I greatly enjoy collecting shiny rocks and treasures from the water. It's just an odd little hobby I have. But again, every rumor has some level of truth.” Dorian could really only think of a few things right now and it was mostly "wow Pierre is really pretty" "fuck my hand hurts" and "I kind of want to steal the gem."

She was next in line to rule Briar Valley, after all. And a kingdom that relied on magic along with a Princess who supposedly held such high amounts of it, it would have in theory made the kingdom a powerhouse against others. And so, a neighbouring human kingdom began questioning the uses of that magic and how it could be used for their own benefit. Their king was unwell, you see, and they wondered whether or not the magic in this magestone would be able to heal him.
“I'm not at all surprised. Do forgive me, but humans have usually been the instigators in most historical wars. It is unfortunate that the magestone can't be found, though.”
No need to apologise, anyone who has even touched a history book or has any ounce of common sense could see that it's almost always a human issue... it is though, unfortunate, I mean, I've always wondered what it might look like had it survived....

I mean surely once it left Briar Valley, it could have been handed around anywhere, and the kingdom thats royal family took it no longer exists, so it would be like finding a needle in a haystack...
