you’d promised yourself you wouldn’t look for him.
it was embarrassing, really. every party on figure eight ended the same way- too many people, too much alcohol, and somehow rafe cameron always managed to find his way into your line of sight. you told yourself it was coincidence. that you weren’t scanning every room hoping to catch a glimpse of him.
then you walked into the kitchen.
leaning against the island with a beer in one hand, laughing at something topper had said. he looked up for half a second, caught your eye, and that stupid grin spread across his face like he’d been expecting you all along. he didn’t wave. didn’t come over. just held your gaze long enough to let you know he’d seen you before turning back to his conversation.
you rolled your eyes and headed for the back garden.
six weeks since you’d ended things. six weeks of ignoring his texts that always came after midnight. six weeks of convincing yourself you were finally done letting him walk in and out of your life whenever he felt like it.
you were doing fine. until he showed up.
the glass door slid open behind you. you didn’t have to turn around.
“didn’t think you’d still come to these.”
you leaned against the railing overlooking the water. “didn’t think you’d care.”
you laughed quietly. “sure.”
when you finally looked at him, he hadn’t moved much closer. hands shoved into his pockets, chain catching the light from the patio, expression as unreadable as ever. the smirk was still there, but smaller now.
“you’ve been avoiding me.”
“didn’t answer the question.”
he shrugged like none of it bothered him. “thought you’d have moved on by now.”
“so why’re you out here?”
that earned him a look. “you followed me.”
“nah.” he glanced back towards the house. “just needed some air.”
a grin tugged at his mouth. “see? you still know me.”
you hated that he sounded so pleased about it. “i know enough.”
silence settled between you, broken only by music drifting through the open doors behind you. someone cheered from the pool. neither of you looked away.
“you look good,” he said eventually.
“don’t act like we’re catching up.”
“you don’t get to do that anymore.”
his jaw shifted almost imperceptibly before he looked out across the water. “you always make everything harder than it needs to be.”
you stared at him in disbelief. “me?”
“no, you’re avoiding saying anything.”
he laughed once. “there she is.”
you folded your arms. “because if i didn’t, we’d stand here all night talking about absolutely nothing.”
his smile faded just enough for you to notice.
“you’ve still got that habit,” you continued. “you joke, you smirk, you change the subject… anything but saying what you actually mean.”
“you think you’ve got me all figured out?”
something flickered across his face.
“you know what the worst part is?” you asked. “i kept waiting for you.”
“every time you disappeared, every time you stopped answering your phone, every time people told me they saw you completely out of it somewhere…” you swallowed. “i always thought this would be the time you came back and actually let me in.”
“i would’ve stayed, rafe.”
“no.” you shook your head. “you don’t.”
he let out a slow breath, rubbing a hand across the back of his neck before looking anywhere but at you.
his mouth opened before closing again.
“you don’t get it,” he muttered after a long pause.
another silence. you almost laughed because this was so painfully him. you’d handed him every opportunity to tell you what was going on inside his head, and somehow he’d still managed to say nothing at all.
his eyes met yours again. “it’s not that simple.”
“no, rafe.” your voice softened despite yourself. “you don’t.”
he looked exhausted. not angry. not defensive. just tired.
“i’d get halfway to your house,” he admitted quietly, “and convince myself you’d be better off if i turned around.”
your brows knitted together.
“you thought leaving me alone was doing me a favour?”
“i thought” he laughed bitterly, shaking his head. “i thought if you stopped waiting for me, you’d find somebody who wasn’t” he gestured vaguely towards himself. you’d never seen him struggle for words before.
“you don’t get to make that decision for me.”
“you don’t get to decide what i can handle.”
“and you definitely don’t get to act like none of it mattered.”
he looked at you for a long moment before taking a step closer. “you think it didn’t?” the question was quiet. almost swallowed by the music inside “i spent six week trying not to come to your house”
“i drove past it more times than i’m gonna admit. the cockiness was gone now. no smirk. no sarcasm.
“i kept thinking” he looked away with a dry laugh. “one knock on your door and you’d take me back.”
“you sound very sure of yourself.”
the honesty caught you off guard.
“i just” he sighed, running a hand through his hair. “i hoped.”
your chest tightened. “you make this impossible.”
“you probably should.” his eyes found yours again. “but you’re still here.”
you hated that he was right. “you really are an asshole.”
a smile threatened at the corner of his mouth. “yeah.”
“you know that doesn’t make this okay.”
“and if you disappear again”
“you can’t promise that.”
“no.” he stepped close enough that your shoulders almost brushed. “but i can promise i’ll try a hell of a lot harder.”
you searched his face, waiting for the joke. it never came. for once, he wasn’t hiding behind one. you reached for the front of his polo, shaking your head as a small smile escaped despite yourself.
“i hate that it’s always you.”
“you don’t get cocky about this.”
“i wouldn’t dream of it.”
you rolled your eyes before pulling him into a kiss anyway. this time, when he smiled against your lips, it wasn’t because he’d won. it was because, for the first time in a long time, neither of you had walked away.
i wrote this ages ago. kind of hate it but i’m trying to be consistent with posting so enjoy 🫰
