I feel like I haven’t drawn this dude in ages, even this sketch is getting kinda old
Interaction I had at work that feels very Akatsuki-coded to me:
Me: In the break room, which is seperated into two different sections by a half wall, thus making it so you can hear from both rooms even if you can't see anyone in the other
Me: Enjoying my lunch as I listen to a group of four thirty year old burley men talk about how "White girl music just hit different while your working", not thinking much of it
Me: Gets up to leave since my lunch is over, going into the other room since that's where the clock out machine is
All four men: Immediately fall into dead silence as their heads SNAP over towards me
A long minute passes. Then.
One of them hits me with the "Please don't tell anyone about this."
Their big, terrible, secret. Their love for White Girl Music.
It just. Idk. It was so funny to me. And also vaguely Akatsuki coded. Though I can't put my finger on who. Besides it definitely not being Deidara. Because I know his ass is blasting it in the breakroom.
Akatsuki's four horsemen of White Girl Music (a modest proposal):
Sasori (bc this clearly contradicts his definition of art)
Black Zetsu (white Zetsu puts up with him bc. Kaguya's will idk)
Obito (uses Tobi as an excuse to indulge in it)
Kakuzu. (bonus points if he's bought merch).
Bonus: Madara. (just because. his playlist is titled "eternal tsukuyomi (bumping that)" or smth)

Then i find out this is a canonical character.
and i'm sitting here like holy shit did kisame get itachi pregnant or is it the other way round. I'm baffled. That is their child. what the fuck.

My pretty boy
dead wife montage but it's a henchman reminiscing about da boss after he got put six feet under. picking flowers before hiding the bodies, wiping cocaine from your nose after a big night, that long drive down the beach to find the bookie who squealed. where did the days go
Kisame thinking about Itachi after he passed LMAO
I'm sitting and drawing pages with Shizuma and Kagura and I realize that I'll soon have the whole sketchbook in them
Dear Shizuma Appreciators, what type of clothes do u guys think he would wear?
Grunge type? Sports style? Lazy "i'm not even trying" Oversized or Professional? Band shirts?
I have NO idea he kinda fits in all of them pls help
Inspiration hit me... Red Bomber Jacket....
Shizuma would def have red as his signature color tho. Red + White combo
Damn, White + Red will look just gorgeous on him, it will look gorgeous on everything
Red + White bomber jacket would look so damn good on him.
The go-to image I have of him in my head for a modern au is so 50/50.
Either very polished, all turtlenecks and perfectly neat shoes.
Or. So aggressively. Grunge y2k. With the helix + belly button piercings, layered t-shirt over a long sleeves, converse. The whole shabang.
b.. belly button piercing... yas...
may I add a tongue piercing as well so we can go full fuckboy mode. Shizuma totally would
I feel like a divine light was casted upon me thank u so much. my eyes are OPEN
Oh my god YES.
I can so clearly see either him and Buntan sitting at her house with a $20 piercing kit from Walmart, doing each other's piercings.
Or. Him at his aunt Konan's piercing shop going "No yeah I was surprised too but dad said I was old enough. No he's busy rn tho don't call him. No listen. Listen. I promise. I wouldn't LIE would I?"
I imagine Shizuma has a very strong physique, not as strong as Kisame's, but still strong. Perhaps clothing that accentuates his muscles, but is also discreet, ensuring he's always well-dressed, regardless of the occasion.
I can't imagine Shizuma wearing many accessories; like, I think he would only have one single accessory that he would wear all the time, everywhere, so I imagine a necklace with sentimental value (or not, maybe he just thought it was pretty).
I can REALLY picture him with that style of piercing.
It reminds me of small canines. I can imagine other types, like eyebrow or nose piercings, but I think his trademark would be the lip piercing.
Oh gods y e s that's so perfect for him
Unpopular opinion: The Boruto writers could have created an INCREDIBLY CUTE couple story with Buntan and Shizuma, but they were too lazy.
Buntan was loyal to Shizuma until the end, and even when they lost to Boruto and his team, she remained by his side as a good friend/girlfriend. She only abandoned him because of Shizuma's betrayal in trying to escape from prison (even I would have given up!), and that's when everything went wrong!
They could be villains, whatever, but the problem was never the couple; they just wanted to make Shizuma even more of a villain than he already is, without even creating a decent script explaining why he's a villain. Making a villain a son of a bitch all the time doesn't make him a developed character, it makes him a hateful character.
Okay, I would understand if Shizuma had difficulty showing feelings, since the Hoshigaki Clan abhors feelings and anything that makes someone seem weak, but Shizuma didn't seem (in my opinion) to have difficulty showing feelings, much less be a toxic boyfriend. I KNOW that everything he did, acted, and said to Buntan was fake, but if you ignore that detail, he was a caring person. He listened to Buntan, stayed by her side, was sweet, had all the characteristics of a good boyfriend, but the writers RUINED EVERYTHING!!!
I suspect the entire Naruto/Boruto franchise has difficulty creating truly good couples, I don't know why.
///////////////////
These two give off a shark-and-ray vibe. The shark symbolizes strength, protection, family, and ancestry, while the ray symbolizes spiritual protection, wisdom, adaptability, and emotional healing.
Buntan resembles the ray in her ease of adaptation; when she and Shizuma end their relationship, she easily adapts to life, leaving him behind and becoming a better person. Shizuma, representing the shark (obviously), has a connection to ancestry due to his plan to bring back the ancient times of the Bloody Mist Village and his physical and mental strength to withstand so much pressure.
(In my head, it makes sense.)
Spiritually, the ray-shark relationship is often seen as a balance between brute force and intuition (shark) and wisdom and fluidity (ray). Shizuma blindly follows his intuition and relies heavily on brute force, while Buntan is more intelligent and adaptable to the environment. Even after the fight with Sarada, both demonstrated mutual respect and good teamwork after the battle.
I like their aesthetic: boyfriend with long hair and girlfriend with short hair.
Instead of Buntan, it's Shizuma who spends more money on hair care, especially on her curly hair. Buntan would be too lazy to take care of her hair, so whenever she can, she cuts her blonde hair.
They give the impression of being a couple who listen to TV series theme songs, are fans of forgotten movies (like "The Thing" or bad comedies that only they find funny), like to talk badly about rich and privileged children, and are a passionate couple.
If Kisame or Itachi were part of his life, he would constantly ask them for love advice, telling him how he should act or asking if he had been a bad boyfriend for acting in a certain way. I think Itachi would be the one who would help him the most, giving advice on gifts, what to do, etc. Kisame, on the other hand, would only offer moral support, I think.
Kisame highly values loyalty, truth, and trust in a relationship, and I highly doubt Shizuma would think differently in that aspect. Shizuma would also be very loyal, just like Kisame.
(It's enough that boys treat pretty girls badly, it's enough that Sasuke does it!!)

What if i suddenly appear and show u guys this
Have anyone ever thought of this song but it's Shizuma and Buntan..
good night, "Headlock" by Imogen Heap but its Kisame and Itachi in the afterlife begging for their son to choose better and open his heart to love. So he doesn't grow with more hatred in his heart and end up like them. So Shizuma can break the cycle they couldn't. Oh i'm sick
“He would not fucking say that” except its the badly written source material so he did, in fact, say that
Side eyeing the "Actually, I AM evil and just wanna fight. Ignore all the interesting lore and world building we spent the last five episodes building up because I'm just an evil bad guy!" Moment with Shizuma.
Boruto didn't tell Shizuma's story well. They had all the resources at their disposal and chose not to take advantage of the opportunity. Shizuma's past wasn't well explored, neither his nor the team's.
Even though he said his clan (the Hoshigaki Clan) suffered a lot, I couldn't feel the weight of that suffering and I didn't feel any emotion during the scene where his chest is opened in that supposedly brutal examination.
(That scene seemed intended to generate more sympathy for Kagura than for Shizuma; I found it terrible.)
Shizuma seems to have a terrible past, but they didn't show it for reasons I don't know.
(This is my opinion, but I don't like his clothes or the team's; they're very ugly, it seems like the creators were too lazy to make nice clothes.)
In my opinion at least, it really feels like the writers didn't want to make him redeemable so they cut any of his actual motivations just to make him look evil. I feel like it could have something to do with how in his first couple episodes, he kinda had a point and I think the writers tried to overcompensate for that by ending the arc with him saying a ton of evil bullshit. But then again that's all speculation, and who knows if they even put any consideration at all into making that arc.
Personally, I like to cope with the arc's terrible ending by viewing it through the lense of, "The story is being told by the Konoha kids + Kiri government, and as such, is missing a lot of relevant information as far as the rebels go."
It makes things fit just enough that the arc at least feels like a poorly executed tragedy instead the half-drawn horse meme.
Because yeah. The sheer amount of half-baked information we get drives me up the walls.
It almost makes me think. Through the lense of it being a bias perspective. With the way Shizuma spoke about the wrongs delt to their clan and was immediately not taken seriously by those outside his group. Maybe the flow went something like this from his perspective.
Start explaining motivation -> No one even semi listens -> He is accused of just using his motivation as an excuse to be mindlessly violent -> He agrees sheerly because he doesn't believe they're willing / able to understand his motivation and violence gets him where he wants to go either way.
And yeah. I realize that's a bit of a stretch. But idk. I feel like anything is better than the shitty last minute switch we got.
That actually is such a good way to look at his actions, that makes so much sense. I’m totally going to steal that headcanon. The idea of him trying to explain only to then get his motivations assumed as him just being blood thirsty has so much good angst potential.

And that's the only time Shizuma appears, as if he weren't a villain who could make a big difference in Boruto's story. It ends with Shizuma being defeated and that's it, Shizuma disappears off the map. In my opinion, it was a waste of a character.
;-;
Dude he could have had so much potential it's insane. Like I think that if he wasn't a filler villain he could have effected Borutos world view in such interesting way. I would have loved to see him interact more with boruto and just generally see how it affects the two of them. Like I feel like shizuma has a lot of wasted potential for some sort of redemption arc, and boruto definitely has some room for understanding other people's experiences outside of his own.

I was thinking about Shizuma's possible mangekyo abilities and I was worried he might be too OP if: the more chakra he drains, the more he can mentally control his victim.
Then I remembered we had fucking Obito who can move in space and had a pocket dimension
Shisui who could change an entire person goal and thoughs without them realizing
And Itachi with freaking Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu.
Alright Shizuma you can be OP all you want, the mangekyo is meant to be random bullshit go
Imagine if he developed some kind of Sharingan ability related to the sea, you know? A psychological aquatic terror seems to be his type. It would be similar to what Itachi has, but related to thalassophobia.
Let him resort to the psychological aspect, he's cooking up ideas.
He's definitely ruthless like Itachi. I like the idea of psychological terror. Shizuma's character revolves around lies and manipulation after all
