hey i’m sorry if that came off condescending! i didn’t mean to imply anything about your training. i also went to school for fine arts originally, and had plenty of classmates who were never told what the point of gesso is because they didn’t work with oils often and they happened to get unlucky with their professors in required classes. in my conservation program, one of my conservation classmates who had a BFA actually brought in oil paintings she made on uncoated paper as an example for the professor because at the time she made them, nobody told her it was a bad idea. it turns out that even among trained artists, material knowledge can be wildly variable, so i like to mention it when i can, just in case. sorry again!!

While we are on topic, the best and cheapest paper for painting (in my experience!) has always been the Fabriano oil paper. Its textured like linen canvas and it resists layers extremely well, so if you ever want to try oils this is a great paper for that. Its also very easy to frame which is a huge plus

hey!! first off I want to say i love your work. but I did notice that a lot of your traditional work is oil on paper, and i wanted to ask, are you coating the paper beforehand? i’m a conservator and unfortunately, putting oil paint directly on paper will eventually cause the paper to degrade. the oils will eat through it and cause stains, which will eventually lead to the paper becoming brittle and falling apart. not everyone is taught why gesso is important and it’s hard to tell if your paper is coated from photos, so i thought i would give you a heads up just in case!
