A mistake repeated more than once is a decision.
Paulo Coelho (via munstersandghosts)
Gone Girl AU: Disowned for falling in love with a muggleborn? There was no chance Andromeda would leave her family better off. Disappearing and framing Druella Black for her murder, it was time for her mother to understand all those years of torment Andie endured while at Black Manor.
Pureblood girl is classy. Pureblood girl is game. Pureblood girl is noble. Pureblood girl never gets angry at her family. She only smiles in a chagrined, loving manner and then presents her hand for arranged marriage. Born into the Black family, I knew they wanted a pureblood girl. And for them, I'll admit, I was willing to try. I attend all the galas, I drank champagne while gossiping, I kept my appearance in perfect shape. I lived in the moment. I was fucking game.
...
You think I'd let them destroy me and end up happier than ever? No fucking way. They didn't get to win. My cute, charming, rich-as-hell, pureblood family. They needed to learn. Grown-ups work for things. Grown-ups pay. Grown-ups suffer consequences.
"If you love me, wonāt you let me know."Ā
As much as he wanted to tell Andromeda that he was fine, it was a universal truth that there were more eyes on him than there were on her. The Death Eaters knew him, and they knew him as a mudblood who they needed to get rid of right away. Andromedaās sisters were even more eager to see him go, yet all that danger meant nothing to him when he thought about Andromeda getting hurt. He supposed that was why some people thought him stupid. He thought himself stupid, at times like these. Always too emotional, always too impulsive. For her, he was willing to do what Sirius had done in front of him, all those weeks ago, and it scared him more than anything else. Would he betray his own friends for her? Would he betray what he had been fighting for all these years, for one person that didnāt care for him like he cared for her?
When he had first signed up to be a part of the Order, Ted was willing to put his life on the line. He knew that he could ā and most likely would ā die out in the battlefield, and he was happy to go that way. But now; now he wanted more. āI know how to take care of myself, āDromeda. Iāve made it all these years, havenāt I? Iāve been in plenty of situations where I couldāve died and Iām still here. I donāt need you to worry about me, I need you to worry about yourself.ā It was selfish, wanting a happy ending for himself and wanting her to be there with him, and all he wanted to do was ignore the fact that he would be the first one to go. What he hadnāt realized, though, was how anxious she seemed with each word he spoke.
She yelled, and Ted flinched. It was completely unexpected, especially from someone like Andromeda. He knew he was almost asking for it, the way he was pressing her and asking her to choose, but it hadnāt occurred to him until now that sheĀ was afraid. Even as someone who had all the power in her hands, she was bound ā by her own family, by herĀ blood, and this was the first time he was seeing her like this. Carefully, he took a step forward to get closer to her again, and shook his head at her apology. āIām not your enemy,ā He began, only wanting to make sure she knew she wasnāt alone. āAnd you shouldnāt have to hide anything from me. If youāre angry or frustrated or scared, I want you to let me know. I want to be there for you. I was there when you first got the mark. I was there when we were graduating from Hogwarts, I was there when the war began. Christ, Andie, I lo ā ā The words stopped there, and he looked down at the ground. Not now. Not now. He couldnāt do this now, because he it wasnāt fair to either one of them.
If he could get inside her head, he'd see a discombobulated mess. Thoughts and memories rallying against the strict restrictions she put in place. Andromeda didn't loose her cool, never in front of other people. She was a bit shocked herself at the yelling, nerves tensed up and spilling through the cracks in her composure. She was used to beĀ that girl: too poised, too quick witted to let anything slip through her hands, let alone get a rise out of her. To taking everything with a smirk and making it seem like she was never bothered because she was already one step ahead of the situation. Her whole life, she'd wanted one thing: more. More status, more power. Andie was sure she could get it, she'd never been one to say no. Her entire person was based on it, a fragile compilation built on the strict teachings she'd learned growing. Years of playing it cool and it was Ted fucking Tonks that was chipping away at her. For the first time in a long time, little bits and pieces were coming undone. Yet, she was adamant at keeping herself together. Andromeda Black did not fall apart so easy.
He came closer, hesitant, like he didn't want to press any of her buttons. Ted wasn't the enemy, no, he was always there for her. Andromeda took a deep breath, closing her eyes. "I know." Of all the things to remain constant in her life, Ted Tonks was one of them. No matter how many times she pushed him away, or he'd tell her they couldn't see each other, they always came back full circle. She really expected the Dark Mark to be the final straw. The moment she'd shown up on his doorstep, Andromeda was sure it would be the last time they talked. But, instead of slamming the door in her face, Ted actually invited her inside and tried to help with the pain from the burn. Same was said for graduation. About an hour before they took off, she'd gotten a howler from her mother saying how she couldn't be bothered to attend the event. Andie had gone to find Ted, she needed a distraction... they'd almost missed the ceremony. The morning after the mansion, she'd met with Sirius. Identical words came out of his lips: you kept him. She was in too deep. This was a mistake.
"Christ, Andie, I lo ā"
Her eyes shot up, the knot in her stomach tightening. It didn't take much imagination to assume what he was going to say. This... this was never meant to happen. It couldn't happen. Not with the things that Andromeda wanted. She couldn't afford to be soft, especially in the position that she was in. Power meant ignoring any weakness, at all times, and feelings were weakness. She wasn't sure what it was Ted made her feel, but she was scared of it. There was too much uncertainty. "Ted...?" Maybe she was making it all up in her mind, maybe she'd misheard him.

Run Ins || Andromeda & Valerie
Valerie nodded, rolling her eyes in their direction before glancing back at Andromeda. āEven before that. Think they run the bloody world.ā One only had to look at Alice Fortescue or Mad Eye Moody to know how controlling aurors tended to be, thinking they were above everyone else. She didnāt think it would last, though, theyād fall when the ministry did, when Voldemort was in power, and everything would come into place. āOr who theyāre dealing with.ā She doubted aurors would do much good when faced with giants again, or even some other Death Eaters.
There would be no mercy, and there was a part of Valerie that was thrilled by the thought. Where blood failed her, cruelty ruled and though sheād never admit to it, her own ruthlessness was an escape from the isolation from her family and from a society sheād been working her way into. It was an excuse to release all the anger and rage she had at the world, the bits that she kept concealed under the mask of a Bulstrode daughter.
She scoffed slightly at the thought of the aurors buying quills, agreeing with Andromeda, they were clearly searching for trouble, people to arrest or write up. And, unfortunately for them, both Valerie and Andromeda were prime candidates. So when the other witch spoke, she pursed her lips, setting down the quill. āAgreed.ā She wasnāt about to be caught up in some avoidable fight and if she was, well, two was better than one with the group of aurors shifting slowly in their direction. Her own hand fell to her wand, holding it at the ready before she raised a brow at Andromeda. āShall we?ā Either way their leaving would look strange, so she figured it was worth the risk to leave at the same time.Ā
As her hand reached into her coat pocket, pages of parchment greeted her touch. The Dark Lord had entrusted her with keeping them safe, and she was too paranoid to not carry them on her person. Ministry business. "Sadly true." The day the ministry fell to the Dark Lord was going to be the opportunity she was waiting. A shark feeding frenzy for power. Andromeda would find a way to place herself into the top, like she always did. The laws were going to be written by them, for them. Stupid things like curfew wouldn't exist for the Death Eaters... the Order members would die. Her mind briefly jumped to Ted, the conflict about joining him resurfacing before she buried it away. This was no time to be sentimental. "There's no pleasure in being king of shit mountain." Andromeda smirked, her eyes not leaving the aurors for one second.
This was not the day she was going to get caught. Not the day where she was going to be stopped and searched... not with the letters still in her pockets. Little details here and there about the Ministry, all written by the Dark Lord himself. If the aurors got their hands on it, they she would definitely end up on the chopping block. She was willing to kill these three men in order to stay in the clear. "Let's move." Andromeda carelessly brushed back her hair, with her fingers firmly wrapped around her wand. This was not going to be the night she died, or was captured. Not a chance in hell. With one of the big blokes hunkering down the aisle, she brushed past him, pulling Valerie along with her. The door was only a few feet away when the auror's voice called out.
"Now what are two witches like yourself doing out so close to curfew?"
Andromeda rolled her eyes, turning on her heel. So it looked like the neanderthals were competent enough to speak. How lucky. Putting her hand in her pocket, just to make sure the papers were still there, Andromeda looked over at Valerie. Her eyes moved back to the auror. "I'm certain that's none of your business, but if you have to know, purchasing quills... unfortunately they were all out of the ones we needed." The words were smooth, the work of a practiced liar. "Correct me if I'm wrong, but supply shopping doesn't qualify as a crime, does it?"
It wasnāt just Sirius who always put on a brave face. It became sort of a necessity for a lot of them these days, even Ted himself. Granted, heād never have a good pokerface, and heād never been good at hiding his thoughts, but since Hogwarts, heād learned to grow a thick skin. The war only made it worse. Somehow, they found themselves here again. Comfortable one second, alert and uncomfortable the other. Ted could say that he was tired, that he wasnāt thinking straight and he couldnāt control what he was saying to her, but he knew that would all be a flat out lie. He wanted nothing more to than bring her to their side, offer her protection that had nothing to do with protecting her blood line. But as he should have expected, she did not take kindly to his words. Heād never meant to upset her ā he just wanted to let her know.
What we? Her words cut through like knives to his heart. She couldnāt help him, and he didnātĀ want her to help him. That wasnāt what he was asking her, and he was sure that she knew. Protecting the people he loved was something he took on as his own job, and Andromeda happened to be one of those people he wanted to protect. She could laugh in his face about anything else if she wanted,Ā This, though? This was a matter of life and death, and the choices they made now could ā and would ā affect them forever. What we. There was no we. There was no them, and Ted knew that. It didnāt have to be them, though. She didnāt have to keep entertaining whatever this was, as long as she made the right choices and did the right things for herself. If he had to let her go, he would, but only under those circumstances.
"I only bring it up because I know you know Iām right. Where you are is dangerous." Ted replied, and shook his head quietly at the words that followed. "That ā That canāt be true. People know what happened at the Ministerās party. There must be someone out there who wants to fight." He wasnāt sure if he was trying to convince her or reassure himself. His tone certainly wasnāt entirely convincing, but at least the words were getting out there. "I didnāt ā Iām not trying to pressure you. Or make you angry. Iām really not, and I didnāt even want to have this conversation here, but āDromeda. Even now, theyāre watching you. All of them. The aurors, the Death Eaters, everyone.ā
>Ā "Dangerous isn't anything I'm not familiar with." No matter what side she was on, things would be dangerous. She was either going to die at the hands of an Order member, or find her end from a Death Eater for being a traitor. By staying with the family, she could have the protection of her name and position in society. Voldemort knew he'd made a mistake with Orion Black's death, that spilling pure blood wouldn't help his cause. It was the vaults of the Sacred 28 that were supplying him with galleons, with an army. The Dark Lord couldn't afford to kill off another Black. This was about as safe as she could get in the war, unlike Ted. They were targeting muggleborns now. If where Andromeda was fit the description of dangerous, then Ted's situation was catastrophic. "I don't know why you're worrying about me when you're in more danger than I am."Ā
Ted constantly came through, seeing if she was alright, how she was doing. He had to know that someone like Andromeda didn't respond well to that. In fact, she didn't know how to respond at all. To lean on somebody like a human crutch? Lessons from her childhood made that whole concept look weak, and Andromeda was not weak. Andie's eyes dropped from his to the ground, feeling the tension in her body grow. "You're a muggleborn, and on top of that, an Order member." The target on his back was glowing bright red. Too many Death Eaters wanted him dead. It was hitting her nerves that he was too preoccupied with her to keep an eye out for himself. "The two of us are queuing in line for the guillotine Ted, but you're farther ahead than I am." She didn't have to go far to hear the death threats against that 'mudblood Tonks'. Bellatrix or Narcissa would kill him on the spot if they ever had the pleasure of running into him. She stayed quiet when she he talked about the Minister's party. That night had only solidified the fear the Dark Lord induced. A look of doubt cast on her face, but she didn't let one word leave her lips.
The more he talked about people watching her the more her irritation grew. She was being careful in everything she did, but what if it wasn't enough? Andromeda was keen on surviving the war, doing it was proving to be a bigger challenge than she expected. Maybe it was the build up of paranoia, the sleep deprivation or how bloody caring he was but she felt that steely composure snap for a second. "Do you think I don't know that?! My own fucking sister was following me to keep an eye on what I was doing-" Andromeda bit back her tongue, her voice straining. She took a step back, leaning against a nearby wall. Ten years of pent up anger were threatening to burst through, the result of her expertly bottling away anything that set her on edge. Ten years that he definitely didn't deserve to hear about now, not when he was only looking out for her. Andromeda closed her eyes, gritting her teeth. She never yelled at him, usually too coy to display any sort of frustration. "Sorry... I don't know what that was..."
make me choose - anonĀ asked: Raven Reyes or Octavia Blake
Andromeda looked worried, to say the least. That much was expected, of course, what with Death Eaters being hunted down for the sake of safety. He worried for her, trying to reason himself that he was allowed to worry about her because she hadnāt reallyĀ done anything bad, like the rest of them (even though he knew that couldnāt possibly be true). Even the pouch that she never commented on continued to linger on his mind, wondering just what she might be doing here. When she mentioned Voldemort, though, a shiver ran up his spine and he shook his head. āYouā¦We shouldnāt talk about that here. Thereās too many people listening.ā With everyone on high alert and aurors guarding every corner of the Alley, it was dangerous even mentioning the āDark Lordā. Merlin knew Ted could never support the Death Eaters, never mind their actions, but Andie, he had to keep out of trouble as much as he could.
If even Andromeda was saying that Voldemort would attack again, and soon, Ted had no doubt in his mind that it really would. There was not much he could do about it by himself but to prepare for whatever might be coming their way next, āSirius isā¦Heāll be fine. We all know how strong he is. I didnāt do much, I just went by to make sure he was actually keeping himself alive.ā And that really was how he felt about it. There wasnāt a whole lot he could do ā it was Siriusā own battle, after all. It was easy to tell that Andromeda was worried about a certain auror, as she kept looking back, so Ted placed a small hand on her back to lead her away from that particular area to a quieter one, even though there really were guards every step of their way.
"Weā¦We need to start protecting ourselves better. Thereās too much at risk here. Not just Sirius." He continued, as they walked, his hand now back by his side. We, like Andromeda was already a part of that we. He could only hope ā but if she didnāt want to join them, he would still have to move on. There was Molly, who was pregnant and was about to have a child in the middle of a war; there was Mary, a friend Ted knew he could never stand to lose. Alice, who always managed to keep the team together selflessly, and Gideon and Fabian, Dorcas, Lily and Jamesā¦It made him cringe even thinking about any of the Order members being hurt. Everything was risky. āI need to find people to be on our side. Like you-know-who found the giants. We need that sort of protection.ā He was sure he was saying too much ā he always did, but he was never one to keep anything bottled up inside for too long, especially not in his head.
"Sirius acts like he has it all together... he's always been like that." They were so similar, Sirius and herself. Products of their environment through and through .Even with Diagon being less busy than normal, there were too many people to be discussing business. If the wrong person heard, they would be done for. Andie nodded. She knew they were an unlikely pair to be seen out in public. Bellatrix could still be following her, Death Eaters could be keeping tabs... Ted was picking up on her paranoia, and she was certainly grateful for the change of scenery. His hand found its way to her back, coaxing her into moving. She was too high strung, any kind of contact wasn't welcome. Still, making their way to an emptier lot was a smart choice.Ā Linton wanted to eradicate anyone that had some sort of connection to the Dark Lord. Her hands were soaked in blood, from the murders to the interrogations. If Andromeda found herself on the stand, shed be sentenced to Azkaban within a heart beat. Left there to rot for the rest of the war. Discretion, in a moment like this, was key.Ā
There it was again: we... our. Andromeda hadn't made the decision to join the Order, she was still bearing the dark mark on her arm. Whatever Ted was thinking, it certainly wasn't the case. Andromeda stopped, a mild look of confusion crossing her features. "We? Ted, what we?" She raised an eyebrow, taking a step back. As far as she was concerned, her name was synonymous with the opposition. She attended Voldemort's meetings, she was willing to kill for their cause like usual. Yes, the talk with Ted was resurfacing questions about her loyalties, but she didn't bring herself to make a choice. She couldn't do that. Not yet, at least. The words spilled out of Ted's lips, only making her more anxious. Her fingers tightened around the pouch, knuckles white. "I can't help you..."
She shouldn't have asked him to stay with her. The signals between them were mixing dangerously, waiting to spill. Andromeda's brain was signaling red flags, over and over. "I don't know why you're bringing it up when you know that." Andie was starting to feel like she was backing herself into a corner she couldn't get out of. She needed her options. The moment they were encroached on, she starting drawing into herself, switching over from any emotions to pure calculation. Andie looked away, rubbing at her temple before she figured out what to say. "Besides, there's no one left for you to recruit." Her tone was careful. The giants, the werewolves, even the dementors... Voldemort dug his claws into everyone, leaving only the weak willed behind. The odds were stacked against the Order, the Ministry couldn't help them either. As admirable as it was for Ted to protect his friend, he had to know, deep down, that he couldn't save everybody.
Run Ins || Andromeda & Valerie
Valerie might have had a different reaction had she realized it was Andromeda from the start. And a Black was a Black, despite age (the second thing that popped into Valās mind after blood status) and getting annoyed at one wasnāt really conducive for her own goals. So instead of saying something else that might have been perceived as rude, Val sighed slightly. She knew that if it had been reversed Andromeda probably would have had something to say about it too, but she didnāt feel like a confrontation right now, and certainly not with this witch. āI wasnāt.ā She didnāt think there was anything unreasonable about getting annoyed with someone bumping into her but chose to drop it, pushing some hair aside. āJust slightly on edge. Not a fan of them really.āĀ Them being the aurors casually walking through the shop.
She set down the quill sheād been looking at before using her wand to gather up the other scattered ones, floating them back to their original positions, more or less. āBloody annoying.ā The checks (which sheād managed to avoid somehow) and the watchful eyes bothered her. It was overbearing and she knew that if they spotted the two of them, a Bulstrode and a Black together, even just talking as they were, it would look suspicious. She suspected most of the other Death Eaters found the new laws annoying, and those implementing them even more so.
She picked up some parchment beside the quill display, feeling it with a light graze, glancing over at the aurors once more before raising a brow at Andromeda. āThink they just fancy a new quill?ā It wasnāt an incredibly crowded store and the more she looked around, the more Valerie saw that there were probably only a handful of people they could have come in for, themselves included. But it wasnāt curfewā¦yet, so there was still time to avoid a direct violation of the laws.Ā
"Who is?" Andromeda scoffed. "The aurors have been walking around like gods ever since the laws came into place." It was the truth. She'd seen her far share of aurors abusing their power, checking people simply for the hell of it. That was what happened when unsuited wizards were granted a longer leash than they were used to. For people like herself, those who knew the weight of power, they were careful with when they used it. "It's going to a rude awakening when they realize exactly where they are." Andromeda smirked, brushing back her hair.
She couldn't disagree with Valerie. The new laws weren't so much as an inconvenience as they were annoying. People were paranoid left and right, even those who had nothing to hide. If Linton was attempting instill fear amongst the masses, he'd missed the mark. Witches and wizards would begin to resent him, and it would only further the Death Eater's cause. Lately, everything had been quiet. Neither sides made any significant moves, waiting for the Ministry to either fuck up. The more silence there was, the more an attack would be unexpected. Something was bound to happen. "Doubt it." She said, eyes looking from Valerie back to the aurors. Three men, tall and as burly as they came, spread out across the aisles. Even with them acting inconspicuous, it was obvious they were out of place.
Ever since Linton came into office, the aurors were given different sets of rules- to be a bit rougher than they had before. Andie tugged at her sleeve, it was becoming a habit to conceal the Dark Mark rather than proudly wear it. Slowly, she slipped her wand into her hand. There was no harm in being prepared. Just in case the aurors tried to pull anything. Turning to Valerie, her voice was barely above a whisper. "I don't know about you, but I'm not staying in this small space any longer than I have to." Andromeda tilted her head to towards the door before her eyes flickered over to Valerie. If the two of them left together, it'd be suspicious... but the two of them could put up more of a fight than if they went alone. It was a trade off she was willing to take.

Run Ins || Valerie & Andromeda
Valerie was aware the curfew was in nearly half an hour but she wasnāt ready to call it a night just yet. Recently, for some unknown reason, sheād found Diagon Alley an escape of sorts, at least the less popular shops. She supposed it was due to the fact that she didnāt have to talk to people as much as she would have to at home and, really, Valerie had always been quieter if given the choice. So she wandered from shop to shop, not making any significant purchases, just enough to give her some purpose.
She been walking through the aisles of Scribbulus Writing Instruments, for no reason in particular, when someone jostled her, causing Val to bump into the small display of neatly arranged quills. They scattered from their organized structure and she mumbled under her breath. āMerlin.ā Valerie gave an exasperated sigh and glanced over her shoulders at the person, rolling her eyes slightly at the familiar face. āReally? Was that necessary?ā Even if it had been an accident, she felt it could have been easily avoided with additional caution, something people rarely seemed to use these days, even with the new restrictions and laws.
Andromeda was really pushing her luck with Linton's laws. She was too familiar with post curfew stress, more often than not having to disappear from Diagon in the nick of time. Somehow, she was certain she'd never get caught. Andie didn't make mistakes. It was just the way her world worked. Making her way into Scribbulus, she intended to get some new quills, some parchment. Nothing special, only the usual purchases. The owner promised her that he had Egyptian Ink, 'the finest for the Noble House of Black' before he lead her into a mostly empty aisle. It was ridiculous to drop galleons on pen and paper, but it wasn't like she was having troubles with money. Not her family.
As her fingers picked up one of the tester quills, she heard the door open. Two or three aurors walked inside; they must've seen her or someone else of high profile on the street before entering the store. Staking out personal was the perfect way to catch someone after hours. Instinctively, Andromeda backed away. She didn't notice another figure behind her, bumping into the person who was sent into the displays. Turning around at the voice, Andie lifted an eyebrow. People didn't have the nerve to talk to her like that. Not now, not ever. Valerie Bulstrode came into sight, and Andromeda shrugged it off. The girl was a Death Eater... barely. "The quills are intact, no broken bones I assume? Cut the dramatics."
Ted hadnāt seen Andromeda since that night. The events of the giantsā attack didnāt seem any less vivid than it had been on the night of, but time had inevitably passed, people had moved on. Some, anyway. Some were still living with the consequences (he thought of Sirius and Molly for a moment), and some were trying hard to forget. For Ted, much to his dismay, he found himself worrying more about Andromeda than anything or anyone else. Of course, that wasnāt to say that heād forgotten about his friends. It just didnāt help that everything reminded him of her and how they had left things. Sheād taken care of him, even with her broken wrist, and he couldnāt be more thankful for that. Sheād asked him to stay, though, and he had stayed until the sun started coming up and he knew he had to go. Rushed goodbyes, uncertain promises, and he found himselfā¦here. He had thought countless times about sending her and owl or dropping by to visit, but it all seemed much too risky.Ā
So what an ironic coincidence it was to run into her here in Diagon Alley, casual like nothing much had changed. It was half a relief to see her face again, allowing Ted the reassurance that she was at least alive, and apparently safe. āAndie, oh.ā He blinked, after he walked up closer to her, āHere. I think this is supposed to be yours.ā Carefully, he dropped the pouch into her hand, though he made sure to look around and make sure no one was watching them. At least with the new laws in place. Ted could assume things would be relatively safe, at least in such a public space like Diagon Alley. Surely even Voldemort wouldnāt be so bold to launch on attack on the new Minister, right after heād killed the old one? But he could never be too careful. No one could be, anymore.
"Iām really glad Iran into you," He told her, as honest as ever. Although heād left her with difficult questions she couldnāt answer, and he was sure she didnāt need the reminder, he would be lying if he said he was still counting on the day sheād realize she had to leave her choices. However that would work. "Iāve been worried. Thereās no news on either side. No one knows much, or at least thatās what I keep hearing."
So it was Ted. The meeting in Diagon was definitely unexpected. His proposition from their last evening was taking root in her mind, a place where she normally blocked him out of and seeing him in the flesh only brought it forwards. Andromeda eyes fell on the pouch in his hand, nerves prickling with the realization that she'd dropped it. She had to be more careful. "You could say that- thanks." Her fingers wrapped around the bag tightly, before mirroring his action. She glanced over at Knockturn's entrance. There was always one auror on duty there, though he seemed a bit more preoccupied with the Daily Prophet to notice anything peculiar. She really hadn't been paying much thought to her surroundings, it could be a costly mistake. Folding the letters in half, Andie turned her attention to him. Little reminders of the head wound were there, but Ted looked fine for the most part.
There was a small twinge of relief in seeing him. They hadn't spoken since her apartment, and so much had happened. Andromeda was partially trying to avoid him, though life was proving a good enough distraction for that. The Blacks were a hot mess, Bellatrix was following her, Sirius was taking Orion's death terribly, both of her parents were grief stricken. On top of that, that Daisy girl told her she'd seen Andie helping Ted at the mansion. It was all a bit much. The last time she'd properly fallen asleep was when they'd been together. Dark circles, messily kept attire; it was starting to show in her appearance. Ted talking broke her out of her head. She'd be a liar if she said she wasn't happy to see him, but Andie's mood lately was more cynical than usual. She nodded, "What are the odds?"
It seemed like she wasn't the only one that was worrying these days. Ted mentioned the lack of activity, it was dangerous. "If the Dark Lord was planning anything, I doubt he'd tell us until the moment came." There was a hint of anger coloring her words. Andromeda's expression turned dark. She was the type of person who took to misinformation, or no information, badly. Meticulous planning for every circumstance was a high priority, and leaving her out to dry like Voldemort had with Weymouth picked away at her control. Andromeda brushed back her hair, looking back at the auror while she spoke. "Still, it's getting too quiet. Something has to happen." Another attack on the Ministry, infiltration, muggleborn murders? They were all on the table at this point. Andie let out a breath, bottling away her irritation. Her voice dropped, just so the two of them could hear. "Sirius told me you went to see him... thank you- for checking up on him."
Ted wasĀ sureĀ there was a better way to handle the recent attack than to check every single person who came into Diagon Alley. Granted, it wasnāt the worst idea the Ministry had had in the past few years and hopefully it would weed out anyone potentially dangerous. But they all knew better than that. It would be impossible to know and catch all the Death Eaters walking around, especially with how anxious and nervous everyone seemed to be.
His point was only proven when someone bumped into him, and passed right by without saying another word. Ted was almost annoyed, until he noticed that the person had dropped something on the street. Quickly, he walked over and picked it up, immediately somewhat curious what was inside. It was heavier than it seemed, but it didnāt seem like it was holding any coins. Call it paranoia, but he was momentarily concerned that this would have something to do with dark magic. And if it did, he would be ready to take action.Ā
āHey ā hey! You dropped this.ā Ted finally called out after a moment of hesitation, and held the pouch up.
Things in her life had been extremely strange lately. Be it the Ted and Sirius' propositions, the laws following the attack or finding out Bellatrix had been following her- Andromeda's brain felt like it was working overtime to keep up. Rifling through papers, a package was loosely wedged under her arm. She'd picked up a few letters from the post, and her bag... well, Gringott's was paying out in full. Her eyes scanned across her mother's handwriting, catching the occasional word about Orion or how disappointed Druella was with Andie's choices. A casual reminder of how the Black family was coping with the loss of their patriarch. She bit down on her lip, too busy trying to sort out her thoughts to notice any details about Diagon.
People normally stayed out of her way. It was just something she'd grown used to. Diagon was no different than Hogwarts, no one wanted to cross her. Especially now, with the whole wizarding community knowing about the Black's loss. Wounded Blacks reacted like dangerous animals, unpredictable in their actions. Venomous tongues cut through skin, and in the heat of the moment, they caused a boat load of damage. Andromeda shrugged into her coat, willing her greys to pay attention to the paper. As much as she hated her mother, Andie could learn a lot from one of her letters. How Cissa was doing, if Bellatrix was still going off the deep end- she'd promised to try and coax the environment between her family, but Andromeda was never good at that. From what she'd seen, both with her visit and through the mirror, everyone was wearing the same dark circles and angry expressions.
Her frame hit into someone else, but Andie didn't even glance up. She usually made a snide comment or shot a dark look. Instead, she kept on walking, kept on thinking. There wasn't any time for talking, though the sudden lack of weight threw her off. A voice called out after her and Andromeda turned around, taking down her hood. Who she saw surprised her, "Ted-?". Her voice was tired, lacking that Andromeda charm. Just her luck to bump into the very person that planted a load of confusion in her thoughts.
"I promise it wont happen again," Pius answered, his lips pulling into a small smile as she spoke. It was true that he was a little.. rough around the edges, and usually didnāt find much room for joking in his conversations, but the situation was so outrageous that Pius couldnāt help but feel like laughing. His boss murdered by his other (much scarier) boss, in a room full of his enemies? It was practically a soap opera. "Donāt want the end to come any sooner than it has to." As the words came, all Pius could think of was the election. Which man would make or break his life?
āIts a little off putting toĀ beĀ out of the office,ā he agreed. āYou imagination is spot on. The entire staff is running around like chickens.ā Of course, there were safety nets set in place, little buffers that would keep the ministry from falling apart when travesty struck. And naturally, three men were already ready to campaign to be Minister; their speeches already written before Weymouthās body hit the ground.
It wasnāt soothing, knowing that each new candidate was building their campaigns off of how they would end the war; how they would sniff out the Death Eaters in the ministry, namely himself. āNow more than ever. Iāll probably be nursing a pot of coffee until the new Minister is decided.ā A pot of coffee, and little to no sleep. But that was the life heād signed up for.Ā
"I sure hope so, for everyone's sake." Andromeda shot the man across from her a smirk. The banter was nice little change from the weight she'd been carrying. She was sure he could say the same. Everyone that came in contact with Andromeda either mentioned Orion or asked if she was alright... It was beginning to get on her nerves. Still, she took a sip of her coffee, the dead pan snark returning within seconds. "My traumatized mind can't handle this kind of change." As much as she wanted to be joking about the 'end', the attack on the mansion reminded her just how close they all were to straddling the line between life and death. All it took was a good push for someone to end up dead.
The corners of her lips pulled up into a grin. There was nothing she loved more than an unnecessary chaotic scene. Politics was the perfect place to find it. Through his validation, she knew the Ministry was hit harder by the death than they were letting on. Scrambling about to find a new minister was a messy ordeal. "I have to say, it's impressive to see the candidates so... ready to campaign." There had to be someone, like her, who thought the event to be a little more than convenient. She was curious to see which minister-in-waiting was going to be on there side. If the election was actually rigged in their favor. Although they all promised to eradicate Voldemort once elected, you could never actually trust a politician. They were talented liars.
"If it's ever decided..." Andie nodded, grey eyes studying Pius. " Now if your luck is terrible enough, all three could 'mysteriously' drop dead before the ballots are counted." There was a teasing edge to her voice, but who really knew? Voldemort wasn't one to explain his choices to the Death Eaters, the mansion was proof of that. He could be plotting another attack and they wouldn't find out until the moment of.

"Even if that money really was for rent," Bellatrix started, sneering across the alleyway at her sister, "This just proves that you still need the family. You still need us." Really, she knew Andie would never agree, half because she was so stubborn and half because the two never agreed on anything, they could argue over the color of the sky for hours.
For a moment, Bellatrix had felt guilty for following her sister. Werenāt they supposed to be making peace? Werenāt they supposed to be growing close again? Maybe so, but it had always been a one way street, only Bellatrix had tried to stay civil.
Civil, of course, meaning being over protective and smothering her younger sisters, holding them so tightly ever since Sirius left that both Andie and Cissa avoided her like the plague. Surely, it had been a bad idea to even follow Andie at all, but Bellatrix was desperate to see her again, only to be so disappointed with the outcome.
"Most families make an effort to see each other. Or send an owl to let you know theyāre alive. Whatever."
From the other end of the alleyway, a burst of light appeared from the tip of a wand. Someone was coming.
Andromeda shot her a dark look. Bellatrix was right- she just wasn't willing to admit it. The family's money was important in keeping her lifestyle, but Andie was sure she could manage without it. She'd always been crafty, and what were a few galleons? Gritting her teeth, Andie leveled her gaze at Bellatrix. It was difficult to keep the venom out of her voice. "You're reaching a new state of delusional, Bella."
There were so many worse things she was itching the say, all of them threatening to escape her lips. And she would've done so if it her promise to Cissa didn't exist. Instead, her fingers wrapped tightly around her wand... just in case one of the minster's puppets was to appear.
She should've sent word. She really should've thought it all through. Everything had its consequences, which was something Andromeda was unfortunately finding out. Taking care of Ted, and him doing the same for her took more time than expected. She should've written a note. Still, it wasn't like she could tell Bellatrix the truth without being burned alive. "I broke my wrist- writing a letter would've only been problematic."
As much as she wanted to bicker with Bellatrix, the sudden light caught her attention. Andromeda reached out, her hand wrapping around Bella's forearm. "Well don't just stand there, move-" She hissed.
Save your breath|| Andromeda and Emmeline
The sun had already set a few hours ago and Emmeline was in no hurry to leave her safe spot.Ā She could hear a voice nagging in the back of her head reminding her that curfew was probably nearing.Ā She tried to push down the annoyance that the thought gave her, but she sighed.Ā She didnāt want to abide by this stupid curfew but she also didnāt like the idea of being held overnight in the ministry being questioned.Ā She wasnāt doing anything risky, she was just enjoying herself outdoors like she always did.Ā
She pushed herself off the trunk of the tree and was about to make her way back to her house when she noticed some large figures on the outskirts of the forest.Ā āShit,ā she muttered quietly as she ducked behind a bush.Ā Was it already 10? She thought to herself.Ā She couldnāt risk making it past the men, no matter who they may be so she hurried back into the forest and made her way towards Diagon Alley.Ā It was a long roundabout way back to her house, and if she had gotten caught it would look more suspicious emerging from the forest to Diagon Alley rather than her town; but she ignored her gut and made her way anyways.Ā
When she emerged into Diagon, she noticed that she had a clear haul down the stony road to make her way back towards her house.Ā It would take 20 minutes to get there from here, but if she ran in the shadows she had a better chance of making it without getting caught.Ā Emmeline looked up and noticed someone nearing her.Ā Of course I know itās ten, the real question is do you know that itās ten? She thought.Ā Responding to a stranger in Diagon wasnāt the smartest idea though, so she just muttered a quick āyes, Iām getting right home.Ā I lost track of time,ā and tried to brush her way past the girl. She looked so familiar, Emmelineās curiosity slowed her.Ā Donāt talk to her, Donāt do it.Ā You donāt know who she is, just keep walking Em, She thought but her mouth opened before her mind could shut her up.Ā āIām sorry, do I know you?āĀ She blurted.Ā Shit.Ā Good luck getting home tonight dumbass.
If the girl had been smart, she would've gone on her way instead of asking questions. Then again, curiosity was cruel thing. It tugged away at you, leading you to more trouble that you originally intended on getting into. Andromeda couldn't help but laugh upon hearing her speak.
"Everyone knows me." It wasn't meant to be smug, simply the truth. Anyone with magical blood was well aware of who the Blacks were, and Andromeda had a reputation for causing mischief. The introduction was cut short, however, when she heard a crack. Someone appeared across the street, a broad figure. No doubt the Minister would cast a spell to prevent apparition, so that anyone stuck in Diagon would be caught. Smart, inconvenient but smart. Andromeda's hand shot out, grabbing the girl and pulling her away from the light. She wasn't someone who looked out for others, Andromeda always saved her own skin. Still, this stranger could be useful to place the blame on... or at least keep her close so she didn't rat on Andie.
With her wand slipping into her hand, Andromeda's words came out quiet, on the defensive. "Unless you want to get caught, try to stay hidden, yeah?" She backed away. Her eyes looked over to the main street; the Minister's man didn't seem to notice the scuffle. It was going to be a long night. On the other evenings she'd been stuck post curfew, aurors scattered about, plentiful in numbers. And she hadn't taken on any dead weight. Glancing at the girl, she smirked. "As for 'knowing me', I'm Andromeda... Black." Her voice lingered on the last word
