My best friend in high school loved making mixtapes. She’d make a lot for her boyfriend, a couple for me. I like music, but I couldn’t get how she had the energy to put songs together so well, seamlessly playing one after the other.

I get it now.

There’s a song I hear and want to slow dance to with you, right in our kitchen while your chili cooks, my head on your chest, your chin on my head.

There’s a song I hear and want to make out to on our couch after a long day, wine glasses empty, with only our lips telling stories through dancing tongues.

There’s a song I hear and want to hold your hand to while we plan trips around the world, Paris being our first stop so you could show me around.

There’s a song I hear and want to listen to while we work side by side, it’ll be just through my earphones so I don’t distract you.

There’s a song I hear and want to cuddle to you with but it had the line “marry me” in it and it felt awkward to share with you because we hadn’t talked about marriage yet. Maybe now I can.

I get it now.
