Shawn Washburn for #tbdArt
It was a humid weekend in New York City, and Steven used the time it took his layers to dry to chat with the many passers-by who wanted to know more about his project. "I am so grateful to have this amazing opportunity," Steven said. "I can't wait to hear peoples' reactions to the finished piece!"
Dubbed "Lady Liberty 2.0" by the staff of Andaz 5th Avenue, this piece will be up until November, when Claw Money returns to leave her mark on the doors to the bar downstairs.
Steven Cogle has begun his installation for #tbdART.
We're happy to announce that Steven Cogle (see above with his "4 Monks") is our next Artist in Residence for our #tbdART series. Born in Brooklyn, Steven would visit the New York Public Library to look at art and sketch books so he's especially touched to be part of our series. He begins work on the doors tomorrow through Monday, August 12th. Please stop by and visit Steven while he's working and if you snap a photo to post to the interwebs, please tag it with #tbdART and the hotel's handle: @Andaz5th.
For his piece, Steven will draw upon the time he spent working at The Statue of Liberty where he'd meet visitors from all over the world and ask them to write notes for him in his journal. He'll be painting a representation of Lady Liberty and will screen print phrases and notes from his journal on top of the image. The notes, all in different languages, will highlight and celebrate the cultural diversity of this city. Attached is a photo of Steven with his piece, 4 Monks.

Aimee Cavazzi completed her piece for tbdArt on Earth Day and was joined by students of Metropolitan High School, the public school in the Morissania section of the South Bronx where she's taught for six years.
Our next Artist in Residence is Aimee Cavazzi. She'll be working through the weekend and will finish her installation on Monday - Earth Day.
When asked about the inspiration for her piece, she said "This image will capture the energy and inspiration of NYC in the spring. As a teenager, I would take the train into the city in the spring and early summer and felt inspired, overwhelmed, and in awe of the immensity and intensity of the city. People have created this city, yet as New Yorkers, we can often feel removed and disconnected from the natural world. I want to illustrate the human form as an organic system, vibrantly alive with fluid and organic patterns and energy that contrasts with the angular and geometric skyline of Manhattan.”
If you’re in the area, please stop by and say hello!
Mister Cartoon’s mural is really coming together during day two of tbd Art. Many people stopped by to ask him about his work and wanted to know the meaning behind it, so Cartoon wanted to share the inspiration behind his work here on our Tumblr account!
“Much of my career has been inspired by the New York subway and graffiti artists that came before me, and I wanted to reflect the impact this powerful city has had on my profession. However, I also wanted to pay my respects to the recent tragedy the city endured and pay my respects to the people that were affected by the devastation of Hurricane Sandy.
"The subway car represents the “heartbeat” and history of NYC, while the graffiti art theme pays homage to the early days of underground hip-hop. The woman represents the beauty and innocence of my wife and daughters. The tattoo on the woman’s arm pays respect to Sandy and all the people affected by the storm. I also used warmer color tones to contrast this colder timer of year in NYC.”
We are thrilled to welcome back Mister Cartoon for his second year as our Artist-in-Residence for tbd Art. Mister Cartoon already drew quite the crowd during day one! We can't wait to see the final product.

Day 4
Today was the final day of working on the mural. I wanted to thank the staff at the Andaz, especially the curator of the tdb Arts resident program Rachel Harrison, as well as my personal friends Max, Tina, Scott, Eliot, Simon, Brendan and Andrew for all the help and support during the project. I was also able to attend fashion week at Milk Studios in support of designer Antonio Azzuolo and was featured in The Cut. It was an exciting day. We are going to have a launch party for the 2nd year of the tdb Arts and I wish all future artists the greatest luck as well as extend to them my support.
Day 3
Today I got to meet a lot of international tourists visiting New York as well as local New Yorkers showing support. The painting is almost done so please stay tuned for the final images from this sunday!
Day 2
Today was a great day of painting. I feel like we have made real progress in painting the mural. I really enjoyed everyone visiting as I worked on the mural. I’m excited about tomorrow and I hope to have the mural almost finished.
Day 1
Today I got up around 5:30am to watch the sun rise and meet Andrew in Soho to pickup the mask and start working on the mural at the Andaz hotel. We grabbed coffee and drove around Soho, stopping at New York Art Central to get a nice metal ruler. Once we got to the Andaz I was greeted with smiles. We quickly got to work laying coat after coat of the thick gold flake paint until reaching the maximum coats need. I’m excited about tomorrow as we get to start adding lines and really get the painting to start taking shape.

Hello, I would to learn more about the artists in residence program. What is the review process for artists interested in this program? Whom would I contact about taking part in the residency program?
Hi there, Please feel free to email me. Send a bio about yourself, what type of art your create, where you are from and where you are located now and a few examples of your work. [email protected]
