Polycauliona ignea (syn.Β Igneoplaca ignea)
Flame firedot lichen
Lichen scientific names change all the time. And when looking up info on P. igneaΒ β¦Β I. ignea β¦ sometimes Caloplaca igneaβ¦this lichen, the name changes from source to source. Makes it hard to even do a quick google search, and I canβt imagine how hard it must be to cross reference from collection to collection and between papers, and I can understand how this would be beyond off-putting for anyone trying to learn about lichens casually. So good luck out there to anyone trying to learn more about lichens on their own, and I hope these posts are a decent source of consolidated info for yβall. This particular crustose lichen has bright red-orange, elongated, convex lobes and concolorous, lecanorine (shaped like a rimmed plate) apothecia. It grows on acidic rock in the southwestern USA and northwestern Mexico.Β

why is deciding what to eat so exhausting. I JUST figured that out several hours ago and now I have to do it again?? why canβt I be like a gila monster and eat a large meal and be good for a few months
it is not a failure to have a difficult time taking care of yourself or advocating for youself. it is not immoral to struggle.
Thank you for this. Today was a struggle:/

Ramalina menziesiiΒ
Lace lichen
Honestly, Iβve been resisting posting this lichen. I have made a number of posts which I then deleted and started over because I just could not find the right images to perfectly capture all the incredible aspects of R. menziesiiβthe delicate beauty, all the scientific research, the geometric complexity, the giant swarms it forms as it covers and tree from top to bottom enshrouding it in darkness, the colorβitβs just so amazing!
R. menziesii is fruticose, pendulous, and can grow over 50 cm long. It forms those very distinctive branches with net-like fenestrations along the flattened lobes. The color is a silver-green when dry, bright yellow-green when moist. Linear pseudocyphellae (pores in the thallus where medulary hyphae poke through) are common, as are lecanorine apothecia which are the same color as the thallus. R. menziesii grows exclusively on wood, and can form long, dense, conspicuous colonies. Sadly for me, this lichen only grows in North America (it is the state lichen of California [the only state with a state lichen]), so itβll be awhile before I can go out searching for this pal. Indigenous people (such as the Kashaya Pomo people) have historically used lace lichen for fiber, baby diaper filling, and sanitary products. It is also an important food source for coastal deer, and is used as nesting material for birds. Basically, this lichen is super important. And stunning. And amazing. I canβt say enough, so I will stop here.Β
Follow for more incredible lichens!Β

i cannot stress enough how much of an impact changing the way you talk to yourself can have on your mental health. swapping out self deprecating jokes and changing unhealthy sentiments like "i hate myself" and "i want to die" to kinder, more forgiving ones like "i need a break" and "i'm trying" can make such a difference to how you view yourself. the things we say to ourselves become a part of our lives and so we deserve to me kinder to ourselves in our heads.
THIS THIS THIS THIS! The loudest voice you will ever hear in your head is your own. Your conscious self may understand that you're being ironic or joking, but your subconscious does not have a sense of humor and will take that voice at face value.
The only voice you will hear for the entirety of your life is your own. Please put the same effort into learning to speak kindly and compassionately to yourself that you put into learning how to speak kindly and compassionately to others.
I use the word "learning" there intentionally. It's a skill you will be developing, not an activity that you can immediately do and excel at. Which sucks for a lot of people and, speaking from experience, definitely sucks for ADHD folks. If you've spent decades learning how to speak sarcastically and bitterly to yourself about yourself, that skill will be better developed than speaking kindly and compassionately, but you can absolutely learn how to do this. And you are worth the effort to learn and develop that skill. I promise that this is so!

My cat: *realises that sheβs hungry, hops down off my desk, and goes to eat*
My cat: *finishes eating, hops back onto my desk, and once again sits on my parcel scale*
Me: Yes, thank you for that information.

Had to repost due to a technical issue...
I drew this cute little wolf spider the other night really quickly after reading WAY too many "kill it with fire" comments... sometimes they get tiresome. I'm sure many can relate.
I know this isnt my typical style but this was done quickly to convey an important message.

"Oh, he's transgender?"
"No, Transformer."
I think that the absolute worst thing, hands down, about long distance relationships, platonic or otherwise, is when your friend feels bad and you can't just be like "I'll be there in 20 with a pizza and a shoulder to cry on"

The rather large (by mosquito standards) elephant mosquito, Toxorhynchites rutilus, with jack-in-the-pulpit plants. Designed for a fellow lab member that works with mosquitos. Though you may not be a mosquito fan, you might like this one - as larvae, they eat other mosquito larvae. As adults, they donβt bite but instead both males and females feed on sugary substances.
Those jacks are lovely!
You deserve to have your boundaries respected.
