âWhat happened?â I asked. âWhat happened?â Jamie, pouring water into a cup, stopped and stared over the rim at me. He knelt down again beside me, snorting, and raised my head for a sip of water.
âWhat happened, she says! Aye, what indeed? I tell ye to stay all snug below wiâ Marsali, and next thing I ken, yeâve dropped out of the sky and landed at my feet, sopping wiâ blood!â
âDâye ken ye came damn close to dying?â he demanded. âYeâve a bone-deep slash down your arm from oxter to elbow, and had I not got a cloth round it in time, yeâd be feeding the sharks this minute!â
âDamn ye, woman! Will ye never do as youâre told?â âProbably not,â I said meekly.

Jamie and Claire edit: Begin Again by Taylor Swift
âSheâd said she thought of cutting her wrists when she believed him dead. He didnât think heâd do it that way, if she died.â
âPerhaps this was purgatory, he thought, and gave a wan smile at memory of himself, waking on Culloden Moor so many years ago,â
âBut to live without herâhe watched her breathe, obsessively, counting ten breaths before he would believe she hadnât stoppedâthat would certainly be his purgatory.â

this passage is one of my favorite Jamie and Claire conversations in all of the books. more than anything else it shows how much they love and understand each other. how thrilling to see this so wonderfully adapted in 7x16 "A Hundred Thousand Angels"!
âSassenach? Are ye all right?â A segment of the darkness on the floor moved suddenly and resolved itself into a Jamie-shaped shadow.
âYes. Are you?â
That got me the breath of a laugh.
âIâll do, Sassenach,â he said softly, and I heard the rustle of his movement as he got his feet under him. âIâm glad ye feel well enough to ask. Dâye need water?â
âEr . . . rather the opposite, really,â I said.
âOh? Oh.â He stooped, a pale blur in his shirt, to reach under the bed. âDâye need help?â
âIf I didnât, I wouldnât have waked you up,â I said, a little testily. âI didnât think I could wait for Mrs. Macken or Dottie, though.â He snorted a little and got me under the arms, lifting me into a sitting position.
âNow, then,â he murmured. âItâs no like yeâve not done thisâand a good many worse thingsâfor me.â
While this was true, it didnât make matters easier.
âYou can let go now,â I said.
âPerhaps leave the room?â
âPerhaps not,â he said, still mildly, but with a tone indicating that his mind was made up on the subject. âIf I let go, yeâll fall on your face, and ye ken that perfectly well, so stop talkinâ and be about your business now, aye?â
It took some timeâanything that put pressure on my abdomen, including the act of urinating, hurt remarkablyâbut the business was accomplished and I was eased back down onto the pillow, gasping. Jamie bent and picked up the chamber pot, clearly intending to hurl the contents out the window in customary Edinburgh fashion.
âNo, wait!â I said. âKeep that âtil morning.â
He paused.
âWhat for?â he asked cautiously. Clearly he suspected I might still be unhinged from fever and be contemplating some grossly irrational use of the potâs contents, but he didnât like to say so, in case I had something logical, if bizarre, in mind. I would have laughed, but it hurt too much.
âI need to check, once thereâs light, to be sure thereâs no blood,â I said. âMy right kidneyâs very sore; I want to be sure thereâs no damage.â
âAh.â He set the utensil down carefully and, to my surprise, opened the door and glided out, moving soft-footed as a hunting fox. I heard one squeak as he stepped on a stair tread, but nothing more until a glow betokened his return with a candlestick.
âHave a look, then,â he said, picking up the pot again and bringing it to me. âI kent yeâd just fret about it did ye have to wait for daybreak.â
He sounded resigned, but this small thoughtfulness brought me close to tears. He heard the catch in my breathing and leaned close, alarmed, bringing the light up to my face.
âAre ye all right, Sassenach? Is it bad, then?â
âNo,â I said, and wiped my eyes hastily on a corner of the sheet. âNoâitâitâs fine. I just âoh, Jamie, I love you!â
-- Written In My Own Heart's Blood
I loved this scene and Claireâs being sassy to cover up her feeling vulnerable.
My thoughts on the showâs adaptation of Claire getting shot:
After a few rewatches I am actually impressed with how they handled this storyline. This was one of my favorite storylines from the book because we rarely see Claire hurt or sick and itâs sort of a switch of Jamie and Claireâs typical roles.
As like most of this season, it did feel a little rushed with the time jumps, which do happen in the books. If they had more time I would have liked to see the parts with Jamie taking care of Claire right after her surgery and through her fever.
They managed to keep the most important scenes which I was pleasantly surprised by with the little time they had. I didnât like that they rushed Leckie helping Claire in the show. While he isnât able to do much in the books either it does explain that he stays until the bleeding slowed and he says that he would come back.
Jamie shouting out Leckie is from the books, but he says it in Gaelic. Iâm sure the change to English was so everyone would know what he was saying, but itâs one of those things that I think that doesnât really carry the same meaning when translated and wouldâve made more sense if the kept it in Gaelic and just added subtitles.
I found it interesting that they left out Jamie being the first to ask for Denny in the show, but he was probably just in shock and wasnât thinking straight.
One of the interesting changes the show made with the cheese is Claire tells Denny to make a poultice out of it. In the books she tells him to pack the wound with cheese. Iâm no doctor so I have no idea which way would work if either. The show skipped over showing the actual surgery, but itâs not important to the overall story so I get it.
Jamieâs monologue about Claires blood loss is from the books, but it was his internal thoughts. The show leaves out him remembering Claire saying she thought about slitting her wrist when she thought he was dead. He decides that he wouldnât do that because there are too many people who need him, but he believes that if he had to live without her that would be his purgatory.
I loved that the show included Jamie helping Claire when she had to use the chamber pot. It was such a vulnerable moment for her and I loved them bickering like the old married couple they are.
A Vicious Game by Melissa Blair: I feel like this series should have been a trilogy. I liked that we saw Keera struggle with her addiction and finally open up to Riven, but I felt that it was resolved too quickly and easily. There are many great moments with Keera and Riven, but I just donât feel the spark with them for some reason. The plot twist towards the end was so unnecessary. The side characters are my favorite out of this series and I especially have loved Geradaâs growth
In honor of Outlander 7x16 here is Chapter 28 of Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Galbaldon. Jamie finds Claire after being released from prison.
âDo you everâwell, no. I know you do.â
âLikely,â he said, smiling a little. âWhat do I do?â âSee the ⌠the void. The abyss.â
â I meanâitâs always there, always yawning at your feet, but most people manage to ignore it, not think about it. Iâve mostly been able to. You have to, to do medicine.â
âItâsâitâs just ⌠nothing. And so much endless nothing ⌠Itâs as though nothing you do, nothing you are, can possibly matter, itâs all just swallowed up âŚâ
âI canât explain,â I said, defeated. âIt wasnât thereâor I wasnât looking at itâafter I was shot. It wasnât nearly dying that made me look in, see it yawning there. But being so ⌠so bloody frail! Being so stinking afraid.â
âNot death,â I said at last, sniffing. âFutility. Uselessness. Bloody entropy. Death matters, at least sometimes.â
âI ken that,â Jamie said softly, âItâs why a warrior doesna fear death so much. He has the hopeâsometimes the certaintyâthat his death will matter.â
âDâye see the sky?â he said, a little later. âIs it not a void there?â he said quietly, still looking up. âAnd yet weâre no afraid to look.â
My voice was hoarse, and I swallowed. âThough I suppose even the stars are burning out, according to the Second Law.â
âMmphm. Well, I suppose men can make all the laws they like,â he said, âbut God made hope. The stars willna burn out.â He turned and, cupping my chin, kissed me gently. âAnd nor will we.â

Outlander ~ Jamie & Claire | A Hundredweight of Stones
I didnât know where my blood had gone. Every drop had left my head, and flickering lights danced before my eyesâbut none of it was supplying my legs, which had abruptly dissolved under me. Jamie was holding me up and kissing me, tasting of beer and his beard stubble rasping my face, his fingers buried in my hair, and my breasts warmed and swelled against his chest. âOh, there it is,â I murmured. âWhat?â he asked, breaking off for a moment. âMy blood.â I touched my tingling lips. ~ An Echo in the Bone
