"OK - SO I NEED A WHITE CANE NOW" - Independence & Mobility by Amy Ryan
"OK - SO I NEED A WHITE CANE NOW" - Independence & Mobility
**Please read and share**
It is very tough it's not as simple as "oh I've got to use a white cane now". But it's your own perception of it that's the key not those around you... This will become a necessity for your independence - and when your sight has deteriorated that much to need a white cane the one thing you need to feel is INDEPENDENT - it's something you have to learn to adapt to and put the "people will be staring" to the back of your mind (for me in reality they could stare all they want because I can't SEE them! Lol it doesn't effect me, but it might family and that's something they have to deal with I can't tell them how to do that but they get over it too) it's easy for me to say all this now I know, it's a big step for someone blind or with a vision impairment to take...but trust me it's WORTH IT to have control of independent mobility especially when - if like me - you're sight has deteriorated that much.
I also found that I needed to develop a sense of humor and to see the funny side when using the white cane - you'll get people saying things / asking questions some of them reasonable and some that could be absolutely crazy! đ
"What are ye doing with the stick?"
Or my personal favourite I heard recently (which my friends who use white canes too have been asked but I never believed til it happened)
"Is that a metal detector?"
All the things I hear are part no awareness and the other ignorance unfortunately but it is important to find the humor in it at times.
For people starting to use a white cane it does take time like most things but stick with it (pun intentional đ)
Also on a side note - The cane is also great for tripping younger brothers up đđ see it can be useful for other things too! LOL

Sherlock + whoever you ship Sherlock with, this episode probably tried to give it to you
Sherlock was with the Serbians long enough that Mycroft felt that he needed to intervene, and had time to work through their ranks. How much of that took place before Sherlock was captured and interrogated? We canât be sure, but look at what we can see.
When Sherlock is running from his captors, they are well-preparedânight vision, assault weapons, multiple men on his trail, helicopters. The man who beats him mentions that Sherlock âbroke inâ. If Sherlock knew that the Serbians had this much power at their disposal, why was he careless with the break in? Heâs already looking bedraggled when he runs from them, and when they have him surrounded, he sags with defeat. Have we ever seen Sherlock face an enemy with anything other than defiance before? It makes me wonder how much he may have been broken in by them at this pointâwhether his run for freedom came directly after the break in or was an escape attempt after being captured the first time.
Sherlockâs back is gouged. A great deal of it looks fresh. Some of it looks as though the blood has dried. At this point the detail is not so great that we can discern possible scarring, so how long heâs been beaten or whether itâs happened before is up to us to decide. What we do know is that he has enough beard growth to suggest that itâs been some time since he was able to shave (and we know that Sherlock prefers to be clean-shaven) and his hair has had time to become significantly dirty and matted.
However long Sherlock was at the hands of the Serbians, we do know that he was gone for two years (more than, considering that his âdeathâ was June 15, 2011 and his return is days before November 5, 2013) and that Moriartyâs network was vast. This canât be the first time that Sherlock has run into trouble as he was dismantling it. Itâs possible that heâs been captured before and was able to get himself out of troubleâafter all, he seems very confident that he could have managed this situation without Mycroftâs help.
So is it any wonder that heâs not exactly the Sherlock that we saw two years ago when he returns? Heâs emotionally unstable, and that is why so much of his behavior in this episode seems strange. Heâs seen and experienced terrible things while gone from London, and all that he knows upon his return is that he needs John by his side again, and that heâs willing to do anything to make sure that it happens. Sherlock can recognize now that he is lonely, that he depends so heavily on John. The conversation that he has with Mycroft about loneliness is obviously a reflection of the one about sex in A Scandal in Belgravia, and just like Mycroftâs âHow would you know?â carried the weight of experience, so does Sherlockâs.
This is brilliant. And, on a rewatch, I wonder if Sherlock is suffering from a form of PTSD. Maybe not quite the same as Johnâs but we never see him sleeping or taking a break away from the case. Heâs always on the move, always thinking about something else. Maybe weâll see something like what John suffered from is Sherlock ever slows down to breathe.
Oh my God, THIS though. I canât emphasis all of this enough.
Really interesting thoughts here.
listening to your empty hearse podcast (fantastic, by the way. i've been meaning to listen to one of your podcasts for a while, and this is the first one i've heard). i was just wondering what code you referring are to when you talk about may 11, and the may wedding? thanks :D
First off, welcome! Hope you enjoy listening :)!
As for the code, Itâs the one that Moran enters to ignite the bomb.
Though it may have been my Americanness showing as the code also means November 5th, 2013 #duhrrrrrr
Welcome back Mr. Holmes.
