“Adoration of the Queen is something really we can't have sense of now, because our royal family is almost like a tabloid joke, but Elizabeth was seen as this semi-divine being.”

The Virgin Queen (2005) - Directed by Coky Giedroyc.
“ to be a king and wear a crown is a thing more glorious to them who see it than pleasant to them who bear it. For myself, I was never so much enticed by it as humbled that God chose me as His instrument to defend my kingdom from peril, dishonour, tyranny and oppression. There will never be a queen with more zeal and devotion for her country and her subjects, but it is my desire now to reign no longer than for your good. . “
John Dudley made a beautiful carving on one of the walls of the Beauchamp Tower: the bear and ragged staff of the earls of Warwick and the double-tailed lion of the Dudleys (of Dudley Castle). Beneath the heraldic beasts he inscribed his name: “IOHN DVDLI”. Around this heraldic shield he carved a rebus in form of a flowery border, the meaning of which he explained in an (incomplete) verse below:
Yow that these beasts do wel behold and se May deme with ease wherefore here made they be Withe borders eke wherein [there may be found] 4 Brothers names who list to serche the grounde
The plants shown in the border symbolized his younger brothers’ names: roses for Ambrose, gillyflowers for Guildford, honeysuckle for Henry, and oak leaves and acorns for Robert, from the Latin word for oak, robur (x).
…And, to this day, there may be seen the beguilements of the three brothers in their misery. Lord Guildford carved the name JANE. (..). And around the badges and the name they signify are wreathed symmetrically; roses, acorns, geranimus, honeysuckles. The initial letters of these flowers stand for Robert, Ambrose, Guildford, and Henry. But other meanings lurk within the blossoms. The rose suggest Ambrose, and the oak Robert. A sprig of oak -the device of Lord Robert- with the letters R.D. appears also on the wall. (J.D. Richardson).
Preparatory sketch by Richard Burchett of Lady Jane Grey and her husband Lord Guildford Dudley. Full paintings now in Parliamentary Art Collection.
