Amy Ledger - Communication Design Studies

Everyone and their work was so awesome to see displayed from the ceiling (plus the pizza was an excellent addition to the day). Hopefully we can see some more zines from everyone after this too!  

(Plus my zine collection feels more like a collection now!)

I was so honored to have my friend Remi allow me to pick at her brain and artworks with my questions for this zine. Going through high school with her she has always been a wonderful inspiration for me to improve on my own work and practice. So that’s why she became the perfect candidate for this interview, I hope I did her awesome work justice because IT IS STUNNING!! 

This is the first print I did on the zine with my crappy printer, and I really like the overall aesthetic but I think I am going to change a few small things to make it even more amazing!!

I really wanted to balance out the organic and naturalistic style of her artworks with a minimalistic bright colouring over the zine. So I can hopefully had a little bit of extra flair with embroidering the binding! Though I still need to decide the colourings of the thread to fully compliment Remi’s artworks (I'm thinking a pinky red/cool green combo?) 

I have had a little trouble with getting my interview together so hopefully, these little plans can get my zine ready until the official interview!   

We used Indesign to help make these wonderful designs along with some photos from a previous assignment of a feather duster! I was so excited to learn how to create a zine, not just for the Ask Me Anything assignment, but for me to make more generally and improve my skills to be the BEST. ZINE. MAKER. IN. THE. WORLD. It might take some hard dedicated years (cue Eye of the Tiger) but I know I can do it!       

I also wanted to share some of the groups work too, cause so many of these letters looked amazing!!! 

So this weeks workshop was using the visuals from magazines and books (I had a wonderful Good Health magazine) and create some lovely abstract letters. This task was a great way for me to do a little bit more physical hands-on work since this course generally uses so much digital work. It was a nice change of pace to work with college too since I haven’t really had the chance to just have fun and not give a crap about how neat the final letters looked.    

This week coming back from the holidays we were given a mission to find letters and numbers out of all the wonderful things in the RMIT campus. I wanted to share my little contribution because this was actually a really fun task to do! Especially the “5″ that I found on Bowen St because that was one of the harder ones to find and I was super determined to find it!! Though I am super duper excited to see the program come out (hopefully week 13 it was?) and play around with some awesome looking RMIT architectured words!     

Recently for this assignment I have been taking some time to work out what kind of people I want to interview for my zine. Particularly I would like to explore questions that are about the creative’s practices going into the future and technologies development. My five options vary in creative professions that both utilise modern technologies like photographers and more traditional practices such as painters and illustrators. The numbers on the side are based on how difficult they will be to contact but I am still a little unsure about who specifically I would like to explore this topic of traditional and modern technologies with!    

After exploring a bunch of articles I was drawn to George Nelson’s Good Design: What is it for?. While I was reading Nelson’s opinions on the idea it made me question what my own opinions were. So I decided to create a little mindmap of what good design means to me in my designs. Hopefully I can add onto this as I begin to learn more and more each day!   

So during our practical this week I worked with a lovely bunch of people to create a beautiful 10/10 font called “SUBWAY” (not the sandwich shop we all know and love but the railway train system). It was so amazing that everyone in the class shed a tear from its glory, but to be completely honest I enjoyed playing with the basic square shapes to make letters that were fancy but easy to read. Even the addition of the quarter circles was a cool way to improve on what we thought already worked. My lesson learned for the day, you can always make a design better by looking at it from different perspectives!
