Hey, guys, remember that intro scene in Speed Racer when Speed is about to break Rex’s record on a track then he images him riding beside him, starts crying and slows down at the last second so that Rex’s record will stand?

The twist with Racer X / Rex Racer in “Speed Racer” (2008) is SO tragic and I need to talk about it. SPOILER WARNING!!! Plz watch this movie it’s weirdly amazing
From the very beginning of the movie, it’s told to us that Rex Racer, Speed Racer’s older brother, died in a car crash. From the very beginning of the move, it also makes us doubt this fact.
During races, a ball of foam encompasses the driver when they get into a crash. Why would this exception happen for Rex? Racer X, who we meet a little later on in the film, also sounds suspiciously like Rex Racer.
When Speed decided to race the Casa Cristo rally race, the race where Rex’s death took place on, he realized Racer X and him have good racing chemistry. They seem to know exactly what the other is going to do. So, Speed, like the viewer, starts to suspect Racer X could possible be his “dead” brother.
After Speed wins Casa Cristo and Taejo betrays him, Racer X, and Inspector Detector, Speed goes out on a drive to blow off steam. Racer X joins him after a bit to talk to him. Speed, being incredibly upset, accuses Racer X of being Rex, only for him to take off his mask and reveal his is not Rex Racer.
I really liked this twist and thought the movie did it well! But- at the end of the movie- after Speed wins the Grand Prix, we see Racer X and Inspector Detector talk.
Inspector Detector asks if Racer X feels like he made a mistake. Next, we see flash backs of REX RACER CLEARLY FAKING HIS DEATH, GETTING PLASTIC SURGERY, AND BECOMING RACER X.
I love this. The fact he literally got plastic surgery feels so obvious but unexpected at the same time. After these flash backs Rex/Racer X says “if I did, it’s a mistake I have to live with.” WHICH IS SUCH A GUT PUNCH UGH.
My first watch I just thought it was a really cool twist. Now- having thought about this way too much- I realize how TRAGIC this is. Not only does he have to LIE TO HIS BROTHER that his is not Rex Racer, but he can’t get too close to Speed or the rest of the family without seeming suspicious. Rex has to watch his brother win the Grand Prix, the most important race in any drivers career, from the sidelines. He can’t celebrate with them.
Not to mention that Rex will inevitably realize the IMPACT his “death” has had on his family, if he hasn’t realized this already. At the beginning, Speed is literally chasing Rex’s ghost, but Rex never left. And we as the viewer just have to live with this fact. That Rex will never get to properly tell Speed how proud he is, that he’ll never get to properly meet Spritle, and that he’ll never be able to tell his dad he forgives him.
Can you tell I’ve been thinking about this??
Bro I’ve got a whole damn playlist about Racer X’s angst, because I just keep rotating that man’s sadness in my head and making mental AMVs about it. The fact that the first time he’s meeting his youngest brother, Spritle is mortified to see him and is screaming for everyone to run for their lives?? I’m gutted.
YESSSS DBRKSOHD FRRR- I needa write a fic about that…
AND PLZ GIMME THAT PLAYLISTTTT I NEED MORE RACER X ANGST!!! /lh /nf
Here you go UwU
Forgive my man he did all of that but he had a good reason (he's in love with his brother)
feeling possessive of your big brother. he was yours first after all.

I don’t know whether Spritle was born before or after Rex left home but I’m totally not having feelings about how the first time Racer X is meeting his youngest brother, Spritle’s over here like “RUN FOR YOUR LIVES” and “What’s HE doing here?”
I always thought this moment was a reference to her being pregnant but I might have been reading too much into it.
Ohhh see you’re smart

In the original show, there is a 10 year age gap between Speed and Spritle, which makes sense in the context of the movie too if Speed is 10 in the flashback at the beginning (where Rex is 18) and there is an 8 year gap between when Rex raced at Thunderhead and when Speed does. Spritle is probably conceived right around the time Rex is leaving home, maybe it was before, but Mom hadn't broken the news to the family yet, or right after.
Rex would have probably heard the news that there was a new Racer boy while he was still racing with Uniron, before the trial and him faking his death. So, I think Spritle screaming and slamming the door in his face probably was the first time he ever met his youngest brother.
But think about this, Rex finds out his Mom had another child during the first year he's with his evil slimey sponsor team and is seeing the underbelly of the racing world for the first time, and all he can think is, "Oh no. Another kid set up for failure to follow him into this hell." Because of course he's going to, he's a Racer. If he's anything like Speed, if he's anything like Rex, of course he's going to end up right where Rex himself is right now. And it was already hard enough when he thought it was only one brother he had to protect from this fate, but now there's another, and he has to do something to create a future for his brothers where there wasn't one for him. So even if he know it will break his family's hearts in the end, he whistle blows on his team, goes to trial and rats out on all the crime he's witnessed. Then, he fakes his death to stop anyone from going after his family in retaliation, joins the CIB as an alias, and becomes Racer X.
Now years later, the racing world is much the same as it was for him, but now Speed's embroiled in it too, just like he knew he would be. How much longer till it gets all three of the Racer boys? He's still never met his youngest brother, but in his gut he knows it's only a matter of time before it gets him too.
He's standing on the doorstep of his old family home with the Inspector, knowing this is a bad idea, when a young boy and a monkey open the door. Before either of them can get a word out, the boy screams and slams the door in their faces. And Rex realizes, this is his youngest brother, the one he never met. They're invited in by Pops, and Rex is standing there silently as the Inspector explains why they're there. His eyes keep drifting to Speed, to see how he's handling the information and to etch into his brain the young man his kid brother has turned into. But in equal parts his gaze keeps turning to the young boy hiding behind the counter with his pet monkey.
He's not sure what he was expecting his youngest brother to be like, maybe a carbon copy of Speed at that age, but he's clearly not. He obviously likes sweets, is a bit suspicious and a lot dramatic, but he seems like a good kid. He's following the conversation as well as all of the adults in the room, like he understand the intricate working of the racing world, and of course he does, he's a Racer, it's in his blood. But Rex doesn't see that spark in his eye he recognizes in Speed and his own when being in a race is brought up. And something unclenches in his chest as he realizes maybe this youngest brother isn't a racecar driver like he and Speed are, maybe he'll still be safe from the underbelly that swallowed him and is attempting to swallow Speed now.
And when he brings up the Casa Cristo and witnesses first hand the grief and agony his family is still realing from because of his actions, he is shockingly please to see that Spritle doesn't seem affected like the rest. How could he be, Rex wasn't around for him to know, so why would he be touch by his loss like the others. As he leaves the house, it's almost refreshing to know that at least there's one family member he's never hurt.
Omg bars I love the angle you took with this! Like protective of this little goober who is, sadly, afraid of him

Does he have something built into his dark edgy sunglasses to catch his tears?

I defy you to give me an explanation for why they had Speed driving the Mach 6 (in three of the four races he drives in this movie!) that has nothing to do with the Shooting Star and Augury bearing the number 9, especially with imagery like this:
*I KNOW ONE OF THESE POSTERS FEATURES THE MACH 5, BUT THE LARGER POINT REMAINS.

Ghost Story by Cheat Code and Hate This Song by All Time Low are different sides of Speed’s feelings about Rex/X
The way this is the most accurate Mii I've ever made
(Having seen him on a 60-foot screen a few hours ago probably helps)
