no dying on my watch!

A recent onslaught; Overwatch against Talon, claws dragging down flanks, rending skin and flesh and letting warm maroon flow freely. Baptiste, alongside the myriad of other doctors and healers, were left to deal with the scraps - those who survived, most riddled with wounds that required immediate attention. He’d been working tirelessly for over twelve hours dealing with the fallout of this clash.

Finally, when everything seemed settled, he flopped against a chair.

“Can I recommend that people just - stop getting shot? I know we’re in the middle of a war but please,” his head sunk, dramatic. Baptiste knew that they couldn’t help it for the most part, but it didn’t stop that everything was then burdened upon his shoulders.

Baptiste rejects the syncretism of Catholicism and Vodou; although he can’t fully snip out catholicisms’ influence over the latter due to the one of many lasting effects of colonialism, he tries

he knows someone’s been looking out for him, especially during tough times. he equates this to being protected by Èzili Dantò; a lwa / senior spirit in his faith.

Èzili Dantò is a woman of anger. a woman of vengeance. her possessions are known to be quite violent. while she’s angry, while she’s vengeful, she’s also extremely protective of her own.

while Baptiste escaped Talon, as he country- and city-hopped, he made makeshift altars to Èzili Dantò and prayed to her on tuesdays; her reserved day of worship.

he wouldn’t always remember to practise worship on tuesdays, sometimes forgetting for weeks at a time, which he does feel guilt over. especially since he knows she’s been looking out for him and he’s trying to show that he won’t put that to waste; that he’s worthy of her protection.

he does believe he’s been possessed by her in critical times, and that she’s saved his life.

after finding stability in Overwatch, he sets up a stationary altar to her in his room in the major Overwatch base. it’s coloured in bright greens, blues, and red; it sports a small, commissioned crosshatch metalwork of Èzili Dantò’s vevé, a statue, candles, and various offerings / sacrifices for her. these sacrifices often consist of dislodged, petite jewels or golden rings.

these offerings can also spur guilt for Baptiste. he doesn’t have the time nor money to make consistent offerings, so he’s hoping that being more consistent with his solitary prayers will suffice to show that she hasn’t chosen ill.

It was a warm day. Perhaps a bit too warm for some; many Overwatch agents had opted to linger indoors, where air conditioners quietly whirred. Baptiste had been cooped up in the local office space, powering through his reports when... sheer, gooseflesh-inspiring coldness spilled out from above, spurring a shudder to ripple up his spine and into his shoulders.

Grumbling quietly to himself, he shut off his interface and made his way outside.

The sky was a bruise of pink and orange, swirling, melding into one another; colour on colour, becoming one in the most beautiful, intimate way possible. Despite the fact that it was closing in onto sunset, the last vestiges of the day’s warmth rapidly ebbing with the sun, it was still balmy. Pleasant. He’d been so focused on completing his reports that he didn’t realise how great the weather was. 

He felt a pang of regret well up. While not nearly as humid as his homeland, it still felt like a missed opportunity to reconnect with lost roots.

As these thoughts gradually petered away, he spotted someone out of the corner of his eye. Ray! How long had he been out here? Likely longer than Baptiste but... Regardless, it wouldn’t do to simply ignore the man. He needed to walk over and say something: but what?

A sudden burst of inspiration. Sure, it was wild and maybe a bit out of the blue, but he felt like Ray could handle it.

Baptiste waltzed on over, slinking behind Ray’s person. He waited one beat, two, before a single finger tapped Ray’s shoulder.

It’d been a busy day. He’d been flitting here, there, and everywhere performing tasks for a variety of individuals. Replenishing supplies, writing mission summaries, reporting to superiors... All in all, a good day’s work - albeit a tiring, mundane one. He felt a slight ache permeate through his heels and fingers. 

Relief washed over him the moment he flopped into a chair, nestled adjacent to Mamun’s own. They were in the dining hall, where a steady, funnelled stream of agents began to flow into. It was that time of day where the idea of food and eating framed everyone’s thoughts. 

Quite unplatonic, huh? Ya Rab… Though, it was quite the big relief to know Baptiste knew him better than to think he actually would mean it that way. It was enough to coax a little chuckle from Mamun. 

“A milkshake sounds good,” Mamun confirmed with a cheery tone, having almost immediately perked up at the suggestion. Well, more than he already had.

“And I’ll try to not say anything that could be misunderstood this time,” he stated, which he accompanied with giving Baptiste a small nudge with his elbow. “You might choke if I’m not careful.”

After a very brief pause, in which his smile dropped, he added, “That is not a suggestion.”

Baptiste squeezed Mamun’s shoulder gently, before patting the bulb and pulling away. The moment skin and fabric pulled from the other, he felt a niggling need to continue the embrace; a compulsion he managed to quell.

He didn’t wanna come off as clingy or pushy but - man, he missed physical contact. Acquaintances or friends, partners or lovers - he just really enjoyed the warmth and comfort that that connection drew.

🍒  :  how much does my muse value companionship?  do they constantly keep people around them,  or do they prefer to be alone often?  do they have or desire to have many friends?  do they see every meeting as an opportunity to make a new friend?

Baptiste highly values companionship; he’s very relationship-driven. While he does appreciate time alone, he generally prefers to be around the company of others. This is a far cry from how he was when he was very young, where anger festered amid being violently orphaned and having to survive in the streets prior to being swept by an orphanage. 

Baptiste has a strong desire to have a multitude of friends, although he’s found this difficult in recent times. This is due to having to country- and city-hop because of Talon, and in even more recent times, since having been inducted in Overwatch where he’s constantly being micromanaged and scrutinised by peers and superiors. This has made his time in the latter even more stressful, because it feels like he’s tried to reach out to others only to be swatted away.
