i do wish people explored/cared about the fact nelly was also catherine's mother. catherine was 6 when heathcliff was first taken in, and nelly was already her caretaker back then, and unlike the book mrs earnshaw was already dead for a while back then... i think nelly definitely carries more animosity for cathy than she does for heathcliff (as does her book self despite heathcliff being. objectively a worse person) but she still is a child she raised all by herself. nelly's dialogue does heavily suggest that rather than having a historical contract like josephine she had a renewable contract, that every couple years she would sign it again and make a conscious choice to stay in the heights with catherine. that despite it all she was someone she cared about.
