Me: He got the gay panics.

During the final fight between Haruka and Rin.

Mom: Kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss *Rin cries* Boo, they didn't kiss.

...

Rin: I'm going to follow my dream. What about you Haru?

Mom: He is going to be free.

Me crying inside because he hasn't reached happiness nor freedom since 2013.

...

Me: And?

Mom: I like it. It's simple. Just a bunch of teenagers doing stupid things.

Me: Did you hate someone?

Mom: No. I like them. Rin is my boyfriend. Why would I hate them?

Me: I don't know. Rin is a drama queen. Makoto just worries about everything. Nagisa is a small boy full of evil.

Mom: He is not evil.

Me: He teases everyone.

Mom: He is just funny and easygoing. I like everyone.

Me: Even Haru?

Mom: My God, he is a stick (meaning he is stoic and boring) but I don't hate him.

Me: Okay. Some day we will see season 2.

Between a break before season 2.

Mom, comes to my room: What does it mean chan?

Me: Is like... Uhm... An affectionate diminutive.

Mom: Is like Harucito? Like Marianita or Juanito?

Me: Kind of, yeah. They're mostly for girls, I think, that's why he doesn't like it. It makes his name sound even more girly.

Mom: What about semi...

Me: Senpai? Is like superior. Rei uses it because Haru is a year older than him in the school.

Mom: And san?

Me: Is more respectful. Almost like sir, sometimes.

Mom: I see.

A couple hours later she sends me a WhatsApp.

Mom: Can you please email this to your father? Thank you haruchan.

Some days laters she sends me gifs of Makoto.

It's because she thought with my friends I act like Nagisa, but I told her they think of me like Haruka, so she started calling me that. And she knows I love Makoto so...

Does Taehoon use eyeliner or they’re just his eye bags? At first I thought he did makeup (eyeliners and lipstick) but after his backstory I headcanon him to frequently have nightmares about Dowoon, hence the lack of sleep.

One of my favourite aspects of Lookism is character relationship, and since there is a large number of male characters, it’s inevitable to see some sweet sweet bromances (and romances) blooming as the story progresses. Below are some of my favourite bromances in Lookism:

5. Vin Jin and Logan Lee (Jin Hobin and Lee Taesung)

This is the pairing I didn’t expect but needed. Two antagonists (a bastard and another slightly better bastard) reluctantly teaming up to fight a common enemy is one of my favourite tropes. I always crack up at the scenes where they hold hands. They also share striking similarities: prideful, violent, artistic, easily jealous of others (Duke and Daniel), unhealthy anger management, use grappling martial art styles (Jujitsu and Judo), and only soft for their loved ones (Mary and Zoe). 

Personally, I don’t like Logan, but Vin is okay, especially after Jace exposed both of them to be tsunderes. I kinda understand where they’re coming from, and I’m still patiently waiting for Vin’s backstory, because I know for sure it won’t be sunshine and rainbow. 

4. Zack Lee and Daniel Park (Lee Jinsung and Park Hyungsuk)

When it comes to protagonist’s bromance, it’s very difficult to choose because many relationships are wholesome. But Zack and Daniel’s bromance made it to my top 5 because of these reasons:

Just look at them! Look at how compatible a fighting duo they are! Zack started off with his inferiority complex (still has it btw) towards Daniel. He transferred this negative perception to anger and violence. But thanks to Mira and Daniel’s good-natured personalities, Zack has gone through a massive character development. He’s loyal, confident and considerate. Now Zack’s using his skills to help others and fighting bad guys like a true protagonist.   

Tiny interaction like this one showcases how precious their friendship is to one another. 

Sometimes I feel like Zack’s slightly attracted to Daniel (what are you looking at, Zack?), but who wouldn’t? I don’t blame you, Zack. 

3. Gun and Goo (Park Jonggun and Kim Joongoo)

Alright, I admit that I have a weakness for bad boys, so it’s not surprising this duo made it to top 3. 

Yes, the two of you can conquer the world… I mean the Lookism world. I’m a bit disappointed most of their fights are off-screen, but I can imagine everything would be a warzone. 

Their dynamic is fascinating to read. These two guys have this strange camaraderie, not exactly hating each other’s guts, but also not very close. Sometimes they’re buddy-buddy enough to work well with one another (like in Jake Kim’s arc), but overall they’re just teenaged human disasters who act like adults. Goo’s an atypical happy-go-lucky psycho/gangster who doesn’t smoke or have tattoos, while Gun’s the opposite. Goo doesn’t care about appearance while Gun’s very picky with his successor. 

See? They’re disasters, but loveable disasters nonetheless.

2. Sinu Han, Jake Kim, Samuel Seo (Han Sinwoo, Kim Kimyeong, Seo Seongun)

Surprise! Yes, this time it’s a trio bromance. At first it was very difficult for me to decide which one is the second best bromance, Sinu and Jake or Jake and Samuel, but then I was like… “Screw it, let’s just put them together. They all deserve love.”

Sinu and Jake! Oh my, such a heartbreaking backstory! I love Sinu’s chivalry and righteousness that match perfectly with Jake’s lawfulness and charisma. I feel like they’re two sides of the same coin, so no wonder Jake looks up and sacrifices so much for Sinu. Sinu is like a closest brother to Jake, who’s an only son in a neglected family. Sinu also makes the right choice to favor Jake’s characters and leads him to greatness. I just hope for a peaceful reunion, but knowing PTJ, everything will be a big mess.

Sinu and Samuel! They clash, of course, different ideologies and all that, but during the Golden Age of Big Deal, Sinu also cared about Samuel and vice versa. The rescue from Black Bear gang, the promotion, Sinu was there for him. During the battle with Goo, it’s shown that both boys stepped up to protect their leader. Although Samuel might be selfish, he was still a valuable asset of Big Deal.

Boys protecting each other, true bromance right there! I love them all.

Jake and Samuel! My gosh, how interesting a duo can be. In the beginning, PTJ set them up to be “brothers”, but in the end, I’m truly glad they’re not, because the trope is so cliché. Tropes aside, Samuel not being Jake’s half-brother allows us to see a completely different dynamic, especially Samuel’s mental instability and inferiority complex. Like Gun and Goo, they’re polar opposite but complement each other very well. Even Samuel admitted it and invited Jake to come with him to Gangnam. Jake’s level-headed, caring and selfless, while Samuel’s hot-headed, brutal and selfish. After prison, Jake’s mindset aligns more with Samuel, so I can totally imagine them working together again in the future.

Forehead touch before a fight is kinda their thing I guess? To assert dominance? To smell each other (I know both of them smell really good)? To compare heights? If I spar with someone I always make sure to keep my distance, so I don’t really get them here. If anyone knows the answer please help me.

1. Vasco and Jace Park (Lee Euntae and Park Beomjae)

This bromance deserves the top position. Unless future plots change my mind, this duo will remain the most wholesome bromance in my book.

Their love is so profound that they’re each other’s “ride or die”. Childhood friends who are attached at the hips, as if they’re soulmates. 

To be completely honest, Vasco is one of my first favourite characters in Lookism. I was so proud of myself for looking past the beard, the tattoos, the weirdass uniform of Burn Knuckles (I love them now) in the first few chapters, and gave him a chance to prove himself. He didn’t disappoint me one bit. The badass yet naive cinnamon bun, the “Robin Hood”, the defender of the weaks. After reading his backstory, I love him even more. I mean, who wouldn’t love him?

For Jace, I couldn’t take him seriously at first (because of Jay Park), but then he became the most relatable character in the series. I used to be a bystander to bullying, not because I was weak or scared, but I was so self-centered and introverted that minding others’ businesses was unthinkable. Like Jace, I went through the exact character development, both physically and mentally (except the One Punch Man’s training routine). I’m so glad PTJ let him to have bigger roles with the 4 Major Crews, and his budding friendship with Johan.

Jace is that overbearing mom friend who installs tracking app, brings toilet paper and puts laxatives in his friend’s food. He’s also someone who happily endures Vasco’s overexcitement and simplemindedness (I headcanon Vasco to have ASD, in the mild spectrum). Vasco, in return, gives out his love in the purest form - absolute loyalty and protection. In recent arcs, Vasco has started to be less dependent on Jace, which is a good thing. However, I miss their shenanigans and hope that they’ll be together again someday. 

Honourable mention:

The entire Big Deal gang (Golden Age). Believe me, I’d totally join Big Deal if I was in Lookism universe.

Hostel B. I wouldn’t mind joining Hostel B either, because they’re as wholesome as Big Deal.
