The Unsung Bromance of Petyr Baelish and Renly Baratheon
I was asked about this, so here’s a defense of my “Renly and Petyr were friends and allies” assumption.
When HBO!Renly started telling HBO!Littlefinger all the things he didn’t like about him, I got upset. Because that’s not their dynamic in the books. In the books, they are, at the least, amicable colleagues. Littlefinger would not loudly hint at Renly’s relationship with Loras. Renly would not flat-out insult Littlefinger, especially if he was there as an envoy. HBO…
Let’s take a look at some of their shared appearances and references in the books, shall we?
SPOILERS FOR THE FIRST TWO BOOKS
(I don’t know how to format, so I’ll just bold all my commentary. That should make it a little bit easier to read.)
First small council scene:
Lord Renly stood by the screen, talking quietly with a short man who could only be Littlefinger.
Ned: “You must forgive me, but sometimes you look the very image of your brother Robert.”
“A poor copy,” Renly said with a shrug.
“Though much better dressed,” Littlefinger quipped. “Lord Renly spends more on clothing than half the ladies of the court.”
“There are worse crimes,” Renly said with a laugh. “The way you dress, for one.”
Littlefinger ignored the jibe.
These are not actual insults. This is playful banter. Renly laughs at Petyr’s comment. Petyr doesn’t react to Renly’s. Nobody is offended. If they were modern teenage boys, high-fives would be exchanged. At the next council meeting, we get…
“And puts coins in many a pocket,” Littlefinger added. “Every inn in the city is full, and the whores are walking bowlegged and jingling with every step.”
Lord Renly laughed. “We’re fortunate my brother Stannis is not with us. Remember the time he proposed to outlaw brothels? The king asked him if perhaps he’d like to outlaw eating, shitting, and breathing while he was at it. If truth be told, I ofttimes wonder how Stannis got that ugly daughter of his. He goes to his marriage bed like a man marching to battlefield, with a grim look in his eyes and a determination to do his duty.”
Ned had not joined the laughter. “I wonder about your brother Stannis as well. I wonder when he intends to end his visit to Dragonstone and resume his seat on this council.”
“No doubt as soon as we’ve scourged all those whores into the sea,” Littlefinger replied, provoking more laughter.
Look at them. They’re adorable. And they hang out outside of work, too…
“A hundred golden dragons on the Kingslayer,” Littlefinger announced loudly.
“Done,” Lord Renly shouted back. “The Hound has a hungry look about him this morning.”
“Even hungry dogs know better than to bite the hand that feeds them,” Littlefinger called dryly.
“I wonder how I ought spend your money,” Littlefinger called down to Lord Renly.
Sansa said, “I knew the Hound would win.
Littlefinger overheard. “If you know who’s going to win the second match, speak up now before Lord Renly plucks me clean,” he called to her. Ned smiled.
“A pity the Imp is not here with us,” Lord Renly said. “I should have won twice as much.”
As Ned walked with Sansa to the archery field, Littlefinger and Lord Renly and some of the others fell in with them. “Tyrell had to know the mare was in heat,” Littlefinger was saying. “I swear the boy planned the whole thing. Gregor has always favored huge, ill-tempered stallions with more spirit than sense.” The notion seemed to amuse him.
It did not amuse Ser Barristan Selmy. “There is small honor in tricks,” the old man said stiffly.
“Small honor and twenty thousand golds.” Lord Renly smiled.
Later, Littlefinger’s suggested plan to Ned Stark includes Renly on the throne, if Joffrey doesn’t work out. Most people seems to take for granted that this is because Renly is easily manipulated, but I don’t know if there’s any real indication of that. Besides, even if that were true, he would only be easily manipulated by people he’s on good terms with.
Meanwhile, here’s what Stannis has to say about our pair:
“What has Renly ever done to earn a throne? He sits in council and jests with Littlefinger…”
While that’s already been demonstrated from our few council scenes, this is confirmation that the two of them do this enough to be associated with one another.
And that’s all there is, until reports of Renly’s death reach the small council. We don’t see Littlefinger react until several lines of dialogue later, when he’s smiling, but that doesn’t mean anything, considering how good a liar he is. However, during that scene, we do get one last possible hint…
Petyr: “I knew Ser Loras passing well when he was here at court, and gave him no cause to mislike me.”
That is it. There is no more. This has been every mention of the two of them interacting. There is nothing here to suggest that there’s any animosity between them. They exchange snarky comments, they associate outside of the council room, Petyr says he knew Renly’s lover quite well, and they both want Renly on the throne. Is it such a stretch to think they were friends?
