Peggyâs hand tightens on the doorknob, but she doesnât move. This canât be real. Is she going crazy? She has to be going mentally insane. She steps back, letting him come in. Her eyes watch him, awaiting any wrong move to tell her this might not really be Steve.
Once he was inside, Steve didn't sit, he just watched Peggy watching him suspiciously. He knew he looked older than he had when last she saw him, maybe that was a good place to start.
"I know you have a lot of questions, but first, it's so good to see you, Peg."
"Peggy, don't freak out, I can explain everything."
Peggyâs eyes are open wide, breath quickening as she stands there in the doorway. He couldnât be here. Sheâs mourned his death. Sheâs grieved for him. He was dead. Steve was dead. But yet, here he was, standing on her front porch. However, even at his words, she canât bring herself to move or speak. Sheâs frozen in place, mouth agape.
"May I come inside? I don't think this is a conversation for the front stoop." Steve said when she said nothing, he half expected her to pull her gun any moment now, so he held up his hands to show her he meant no harm.
"Please, I promise I'll answer all your questions."
đ - kisses my muse gently

Peggyâs body aches as she watches Steve lean over the cot serving as a makeshift hospital bed, her shoulder bandaged tightly. âI feel so stupid,â she admits quiet. Though she knows Steve wonât judge her, she hates the idea that heâd had to bring her to safety, especially since it had disrupted the mission. But he simply leans down and kisses her so sweetly that she can add her teeth to the list of aches, though far more pleasantly that the bullet wounds in her shoulder. âThank you,â whispers Peggy.. âFor bringing me back.â
"Well, I couldn't leave my best girl," Steve said with a smile. This tender moment even if it's stolen is precious to him. Just like she is, seeing Peggy hurt always made Steve feel powerless.
"I just wish I'd gotten there sooner, could have saved you some pain."

â Touch the back of my museâs hand
@peggys-orders
The feather-light touch on the back of his hand, made him realize just how tightly he was holding on to her hand, Thompson had made some crack at Peggyâs expense and Steve saw read.
âIâm sorry,â he murmured loosening his hold on her hand, but not letting go.
âLetâs go home, Peggy. You donât have to stand here and listen to this.â

The staff get together was usually an all-boys club, save for once before when sheâd saved Thompsonâs arse in Belarus. The idyll had not lasted long at all. Soon he would be standing in a back alley, making cracks again.
Peggy knew the score. Jealousy was a terrible mistress.
Lifting her hand off of Steveâs, she took a careful drink from the whiskey she was nursing and turned to whisper in his ear.
âI put up with it every bloody day. This is nothing new, and Iâll be damned if I allow myself to be driven off by his childish antics.â She pressed a quick kiss to his cheek. âAnd darling? Donât get any ideas about tuning him in. I am quite capable of doing that myself if the need should arise.â
Instead, she smiled sweetly at Jack. It was enough to unnerve him. He nearly ended up wearing his drink for his troubles, for in those dark eyes, he saw a reflection of the man whoâd shot him in Los Angeles. Not even the admiration of his entourage was enough to keep him taking potshots at an easy target.
Peggy wasnât sure whether his alternate topic of conversation was any wiser than the prior barbs at her expense.Â
âWere you listening to that last game?â Jack crowed. âOur boys donât even need DiMaggio at full strength to get the job done across the bridge. Weâre bringing it home again this year!â
She carefully put her hand back on Steveâs in hopes that he didnât give in to the urge to sock Jack. Some days she wondered if Jack was meant to be nothing more than an irritant to both Steve and Peggy.
âIâm more of a Dodgers fan,â Steve grunted in response, he wanted to pummel Thompson straight into the ground, he had never liked the man and he liked him even less now.
Turning to Peggy, he shot her a look, why had he agreed to come to this thing in the first place? Peggy was a better agent than Thompson and the lot of them put together, she didnât deserve this.
âAre you sure I canât convince you to go home with me?â
The longer this particular outing went on, the more likely she thought the evening would end with one or both of them being arrested for brawling in public. Not that Jack would stand a chance. Peggy wanted very much to keep tempers in check lest they draw too much attention.
She rose and said, âWell, gentlemen, I think itâs time I take my leave for the evening.â Giving a meaningful glance to Jack, she added, âAnd as a thank you for your kind words earlier, we shall do you the kindness of letting you pick up our tab for the evening.â
With the challenge thrown down, Jack was not interested in backing off. Heâd mentioned the Dodgersâ at-home loss in Game 3 just to see how far he could push. âWhat, Carter? You afraid your boy canât handle hearing that the Yankees are gonna trample them trolley dodgers in Brooklyn?â
Steve helped Peggy with her coat, he wouldnât rise to the jab, for Peggyâs sake. Offering Peggy his arm he shot Jack a wilting look over top of Peggyâs head. Before leading her out of the bar to hail a cab home.
âIâve had just about enough of him.â Steve whispered to Peggy as they walked away. Even now, Steve didnât like bullies, and thatâs what Jack Thompson was.
âRemind me when we get home, to remind you just how special you are.â

"Peggy, it's me."
Draw, align the sight, then squeeze the trigger.
It had seemed almost a lifetime since sheâd first been trained to fire a pistol. Tonight she was reacting to the noise behind her. In the S.O.E., training involved firing first and asking questions later. Missions couldnât be completed by corpses.
Draw. The gun seemed to slip from her thigh holster into her hand easily.
Align the sight. She put the pistol at the right level, aligning sight and target while her non-dominant hand rose to stabilize her firing stance..
Yet she hesitated before squeezing the trigger. The hesitation had come before any conscious realization of why sheâd held off on firing her PPK.
âStop where you are.â The words were even, uttered a little more loudly than was perhaps necessary. She couldnât see the target. There were too many shadows cast by the trees in her backyard. âStep forward carefully. Slowly into the light.â
The hand which usually steadied her pull on the trigger was now trembling.
And there he was. The lights from the deck overlooking her backyard had cast enough light to take him in. Pointing the pistol upward, she engaged the safety and carefully slipped down to the lawn.
âIt canât be⊠Steve?â
americansentinelâ:
peggys-ordersâ:
It was a lot to take in. A world where half the life in the universe could be snapped out of existence. Of magic hammers and the men who wielded them. Friction with Howardâs son that culminated in his becoming a fugitive after heâd saved Bucky from the boyâs outrage.
Perhaps too much at once. No matter what doubts she might have about the story itself, she did not for one second doubt his conviction that heâd lived the life heâd told her about. Steve was no liar.
And he was here in her home, safe, if a bit grizzled by whatever heâd endured.
âDonât you dare!â she argued a bit too forcefully. âSteve, I donât know what youâve endured, but whatever it is, I want you here. IâŠâ
She paused and bit her lip. Declarations like this were the stuff of films, not her life. They did not come easily.
âYou are here with me now, and Iâll be damned if Iâm going to let you go.âÂ
The final notes of her voice hadnât yet faded when she was on her feet, practically leaping across the short space between their respective chairs to kiss him once more. She settled easily into his lap and let her tears run freely for the first time in years.
Steve let her kiss him and sit in his lap, trying his hardest to dry her tears with his thumbs. But even so, he let her cry, she probably needed it.
âThen Iâll stay, I donât know how weâll explain it all just yet, but weâll figure all that out later.â
Rather belatedly it struck her how many taboos sheâd crossed that would once have been unthinkable. Sheâd never flung herself into a manâs arms much less into his lap, nor thought to tell one that he would not be able to leave.
God help her if anyone ever found out the effect Steve Rogers had on her self-control. It had been sorely tested during the war. Now after years of doing without, she felt like sheâd just bought a large bag of real sugar without need of ration coupons. Having done without for so long had taken a toll. She would enjoy what was now available and be thankful that her years of privation were at an end.
Assuming, of course, that he wanted that too. The kiss certainly had suggested it.
âHow long have you been back?â she asked softly, pulling away just enough for air to pass between their faces. âDear God, I can hardly believe it.â
Then she stopped, looking more intently into his face. There were lines on his forehead that werenât there before. At the corners of his eyes. More than merely his confidence level had changed.
Perhaps it wasnât out of the realm of possibility that heâd truly traveled in time.Â
âOver twelve years in the future, Steve, did you truly think I might turn you away?â
âIt crossed my mind, I didnât know if there was anyone special in your life, I didnât want to get in the way of your happiness, Peggy.â Steve said cradling her face in his hands.
âSo if there is anyone, tell me now. I havenât been back long, but I can make a life for myself here, but Iâd rather it be with you.â
đ Crawl under the covers with my muse
@ofgunsandlipstick
Steve groaned when the blankets were lifted from his sleeping form and the cold winter air hit his body, but soon enough, he felt Peggy crawl into the bed beside him.
âHm... welcome home, Sweetheart.â He murmured wrapping Peggy up in his arms.

The use of the last Pym Particle was not an easy decision, all the stones were returned, each one in their proper place, but he couldnât bring himself to come back to the future.
For once in his life, Steve Rogers was going to be selfish. so he used his ticket home to really go home, to 1945.
He knew from reading S.H.I.E.L.D. files where and how to get into the SSR, though the stunned agent at the front may have helped. And so he entered the SSR head held high looking for her.
âOf course, wherever you want to go.â Steve said smiling at how her hand tucked into his elbow. Just having her here made him happy, he had never properly mourned her death, but now here she was, alive and willing to take him back to Howardâs.
âLead the way, Sweetheart.â
âItâs just one of his apartments, not the houses, so donât expect anything too fancy.â It was still fancy, but not fancy. âIâve got it to myself, so we wonât have to worry about being interrupted.â
After a quick walk and an elevator ride, they were in the apartment. Peggy locked the door behind them and set her coat and purse on the hall table.
After all he had seen, he was sure Howardâs apartment couldnât compare. it would be nice though to be surrounded by the old and familiar.
âI wonât, trust me, Peg.â He said as he walked beside her.
When they reached the apartment, Steve waited patiently for her to put her things away before he spoke.
âI know I have a lot to explain, but please listen to me, I want to tell you all of it and if I have to stop I fear I never will.â
That sounded like there was a lot more than just crashing a plane and apparently not dying to her mind. And that worried her.
Peggy nodded and led him to the sitting room so they could get comfortable for whatever this was about to be.
âAlright, Iâll hold my questions until youâre done.â
âI donât really know where to start, I guess with the plane is the best place. You know that about a year ago I crashed the plane.â
And so Steve told all about waking up in the future and Bucky, and the time heist that led him here back to her. Hoping thatâd sheâd believe him.
âAliens. Time travelâŠHoward having a child. I donât know which is harder to believe,â she murmured, running a hand through her long hair.
âIf youâre the Steve from the future, what happens when they find the Steve from now in the ice? Wonât that change the future? Or have I seen too many bad movies?â
"For right now, I'm still asleep." Steve sighed, "as far as I know it won't mess with the future as long as I don't change too much." Steve said, just happy she didn't think he was mad.
"I promise, Peggy I'm telling you the truth, every word of it."

She hadnât been ready to say the words out loud that heâd uttered. The shock was still too fresh, though sheâd done the rare thing of allowing him to direct her once sheâd locked the back door. The pair were soon sitting next to each other at her dining room table. Only a small light over the sink illuminated the space.
Listening carefully, Peggy thought heâd gone barmy. Seventy years? Preposterous. There were definite indications that heâd aged since 1945 though she was not ready to believe this. It had been barely four since sheâd laid eyes on him.
âOh, seventy years now?â she asked, her voice sounding more like she was indulging an imaginative child than hearing important information. âDarling, Iâm quite certain that whatever has happened, youâre likely not feeling very well. At least, I hope thatâs it, and that it doesnât look like thereâs seventy years showing on my face.â
âJust, please let me finish.â Steve said reaching out to take one of her hands in his.
And so he told her all about his life in the future and Thanos and the time heist to bring back all of those who disappeared in the snap, and how that had led him back to her in a moment of pure selfish desire.
âI couldnât go back there, Peg. The world wasnât the same, I wanted to come home. If youâll have me, if not then Iâll disappear and youâll never have to see me again.â

Peggy was in the middle of a dressing down from Thompson over something sheâd done without permission. Their voices carried and the whole office stopped to watch. Their arguments were quickly becoming legendary.
âI think youâll find that when I was in the field with St- Captain America-â
âYeah yeah, âthe fieldâ. Look I donât need Captain Americaâs bit of skirt telling me Iâm doing my job wrong. Go take the coffee order and for once in your goddamn life- do as youâre told.â
Peggyâs cheeks coloured red with impotent rage rather than embarrassment. She knew no matter what she said, as the only woman in the office, it was hopeless.
The raised voices were enough of a draw that she was easy to find, but the comment about her being his âbit of skirtâ made Steve see red, and it wasnât just the color of Peggyâs cheeks.
âExcuse me?â The words came out in the voice of Captain America, not Steve Rogers, this voice commanded respect.
The crowd of gawking agents parted so that Steve could approach, it was almost like the parting of the Red Sea. This wasnât how he wanted to meet Peggy again, heâd had another sweeter idea in mind, but this was how it was going to go anyway.
âWould you mind repeating yourself, Agent?â
Thompson gaped for a moment but then quickly regained his composure.
After clearing his throat, he spoke, âI apologize, that comment was out of line.â Though his tone implied âeven if it is true.â âWelcome back to the land of the living, Captain,â he held out his hand to shake.
Peggy had gone pale, shocked to see Steve in any form outside of a photograph. If she cried in front of the office she may as well quit on the spot. The same went for rushing to Steveâs side.
She settled for a small and slightly smug smile. âYouâre late.â
Ignoring the agentâs hand and his comment, he turned to Peggy and smiled.
âCouldnât call my ride,â Steve smiled, he knew better than to kiss her here, not where she worked, especially not when she was just yelled at by her colleague. But oh God, did he want to.
âHave you time to take a break, Agent?â He asked still smiling at her and drinking her in as if she were the most beautiful painting he had ever seen.Â
Thompson looked like he was going to say Peggy had work to do but the look she shot him could very well have killed.
âI think agent Thompson is capable of getting his own coffee for a change,â she replied, grabbing her coat and purse.
Heading for the door, Steve smiled at Peggy, waiting for her to join him. This was going better than he thought it would, theyâd go somewhere where they could be alone and heâd explain everything.
âAfter you, Agent.â He said with a respectful nod, letting Peggy take the lead, he didnât know if sheâd believe his tale, but he hoped that it wasnât too late for him to re-enter her life.
