The other day on Instagram I shared an excerpt of Jessamine (who I still haven't introduced here)'s story, and I would like to share it here as well. It's just a short thing I wrote a couple years ago, but I think it is important to Jessa's story and character. I will post it under the cut!
Jessamine hadn't seen her cousin in a few long years, at least since the two were five. The years had fallen heavily on both of their young, small shoulders.
Arlene and her parents had once lived with their grandparents, but had moved out of town for work. Well, it looked like their work had finally fallen through. Jessa took a good look at her cousin.
Arlene seemed as tall, skinny, and pale as a birch tree, with her brown hair cropped closely about her head. Her big green eyes bulged somewhat out of her head. Honestly, she looked like she hadn't had a good meal in a long time.
"We just moved back down the road," Arlene said, wringing her spindly hands.
"Grandpa's house?"
"Yeah."
A silence fell upon the two. The house had been mostly empty since their grandfather had died. Arlene's family hadn't even come to the funeral. Why did they get his house now?
Jessamine pulled at the insides of her pockets.
"We'll, I'm glad it'll be occupied again. And it'll be nice to have a friend around" Jessa tried to smile through her bluffing. She wanted to roll on the dry ground and strike it with her fists, but she reminded herself it wasn't Arlene's fault. By golly, whenever was she going to know who's fault anything was? Who was she ever going to get to blame?
"Do you want to see my rock collection?" Arlene asked suddenly, "I've been picking them up everywhere we stopped since the City."
"Sure," Jessamine said earnestly, "I'll go tell Ma."
