it hurts.

it hurts a lot — that's what goes through her mind when he says it, when it spills from his lips like the prayers from hers and it stabs into her harshly, leaving her replete of emotion; so full she could burst. it makes her smile. this smile, so wide and so empty at the same time — fate was cruel, fate was disastrous and to love and be loved meant to leave a wound on your departure so wide and harsh and untreatable. aerith would leave a wound. it would be so big the whole world might collapse from it... or maybe she just thought so much of this person in front of her it felt like the world could end simply from the look on his face.

aerith looks up from where she was on her knees; seeing cloud made it harder, she thinks. harder to accept what might happen, harder to accept what comes. he loved her. he loved her. and by the gods, aerith loved him — in all his imperfections, in his mind and soul and body and everything he was, he had permeated her very core and left his mark strewn somewhere across her soul like hand marks dug into snow.

"cloud..." she murmurs at first, breaking up her prayers; she wants to say it back. she wants to love him back. to love cloud would be the finest thing aerith could ever do — she pictures their future, somewhere in midgar where the sun shines and the grass grows and her flowers bloom and she can slowly piece the broken bits of him back together with love and kindness — she envisions a cloud so content and at peace that she could love him forever. she would. she had to.

for a moment aerith thinks she could live. she could survive this for him.

she tilts her head to the side as the oncoming attack pierces through her stomach despite her wishes, despite her thoughts — the words she intended to say never quite pass her lips, leaving an echo empty and cascading off the water, so quiet and soundless the feeling it left behind was palpable. the could have. the should have. the wanted to. all lost. all empty. all empty.
