I started this class with thinking that this class will be boring, but it was very fun! I like this class because this is not only a color theory class, but it is a color design class where I learned a lot of things. Starting with the first assignment where I had to use gouache for the first time in my life and experiment arcylic to learn how they reacts and how I need to use them was very informative. Throughout the quarter, the first assignments helped me to have all my works painted pretty evenly. Working with those paints that Im not used to was a fun experience with creating designs using the colors that Ive mixed. I learned how to mix color, what subtractive and additive colors are, how warm and cold tone underneath a color makes the color to look different and difference between RYB and CMYK color, munsell color systems and how to read value scale. I really enjoyed the last assignment which is the final inspirational pattern project, I learnd to read the painting and found a artist that I really like. This class was very difficult but it made me to get thigs done, challenged with time managements. This was a nice experience for me to think about color and its origin and how it works with art.

For my pattern I really liked the giant grape and curvy nudes and so I wanted to show them through my pattern.

This was pretty easy exercise to do. It is interesting to learn 360 degree of hue circle could be divide into number of pure colors as many or less as we need. It is definitely easier to understand when think about the colors as degrees of the hue circle. This was very simple and easy but very informative and fun.

Entropic Graphomania Value Pattern This was very difficult. I had difficult time seeing value but it was very fun to create unique pattern and working with picsart was very fun. It was confusing to see the value without focusing on the colors. I would like to try more projects like this and learn more about it.

This was a great project to do. It is very interesting to see how one color can look like two, and two colors look like one. I really liked working on these especially using the colors that I like. It was difficult to make two different color to look like one more than the other problem. I thought the complementary colors around the other color makes that illusion, it was the tone that makes the illusion. Warm and cool tone of the surrounded color made the middle piece to look different.

Color wheel I used Acrylic to do this assignment and it was difficult as always. Acrylic dries darker so I struggled a lot. I could not get the perfect color of the red violet and the green from RYB chart even tho I tried like hundred times. Except for green and the red-violet from RYB chart, RYB chart was easier than CMYK chart. Compare to the color chart assignment, this took me longer. I really like to work with gouache than acrylic because gouache is more bright and forgiving than acrylic.

Color Charts As always, it was difficult to mix colors to get a perfectly matching color to the color wheels. Even tho I had few colors that were very close to perfection, the result came out darker because I did a lot of layers of paint. I feel more successful on painting them evenly, but my colors needs to be fixed more.

This was very difficult for me. Ive never used magenta, cyan and yellow to mix color with and it took a long time to get the color that is close to what I wanted. I learned that tiny bit of color to the other makes the color very different and it is crucial to work on it with some good lights. I thought I knew how to paint evenly since I had the other assignment, but it was more challenging since it is larger. It was time consuming, but was very interesting and fun.

It is not easy to find something that can match perfectly to the color wheel we have especially blue and blue green. When I think about finding a color blue in nature, I can only think about the sky, something that I can not physically hold on to. It is interesting how it is easier to find some colors in nature than the others. Red, yellow and green are much easier to find in nature since Ive seen a lot of flowers or plants in those colors.

After reading “Red” from Color by Victoria Finlay, I immediately thought about the famous painting of Edvard Munch, “The Scream.” I think that the red sky of the painting is very symbolic and I could make connection to where the book talks about “what does the red symbolize.” I never thought that the red color will be more meaningful than just a color that is bright and catches your eyes. The book itself was very interesting and was shocking at some point with the facts that Ive never knew.

It was fun to experiment those paints. I’ve never used Gouache before and I was excited to use something that Ive never did. I really liked how Gouache paint applies smoothly. I found that acrylic paints were darker than gouache paints and gouache dries very matte. For me gouache was more easier to paint a even layers when mixed with water and easier to manage smooth stroke without leaving a harsh streak. For this templet, it was much easier to paint evenly with flat #8 brush than others.
