Once I realized who Batari reminded me of, I looked forward to her missions, ha.
I decided to finish Far Cry Primal last night and most of the missions were about the rival leader Batari. As I was playing, I was like, man, she's really reminding me of someone-
Oh. Apparently I like a specific type of antagonist, lol.

Chapter 14 Excerpt: Eywa Did Not Come
Incendiaries streaked across the dark forest and slammed home into the support areas Jake and Varang had identified. All of the Na'vi's annoyance turned to awe at the sight. Jake felt the hard grip of her hands as she clutched at him, her eyes wide as she watched each hit cause more fire to bloom in the night. His own heightened emotions gradually softened as the adrenaline left him. His hands steadied. He could feel the opposite happening in Varang. Her glee climbed for the sky as another barrage of incendiaries struck the tree. "Move back, everyone." Jake helped Varang stay steady as the gunship beneath their feet moved. The massive ship retreated back to the secondary firing position. When the ship slowed to a hover, he heard the colonel's voice order that all call signs switch to missiles. This was it. The metal beneath them shuddered once, then twice. The missiles struck home into the support structures.
Weakened by fire, the columns cracked. Movement from the corner of his eye momentarily made Jake look to his left. One of the smaller gunships rose above the others and turned back the way they had come. Had there been mechanical difficulties? Varang's gasp drew his gaze back to the tree. The gunships had stopped their firing. He watched, feeling her rising expectation, as the columns began to collapse. The Na'vi covered her mouth, her eyes wider than Jake had ever seen. Her tail stilled behind her. A groan echoed through the air as the colossal tree began to lean back wreathed in flames as the mountain spat more fire, as the heat and smoke choked Varang even from the distance they were now at- He shook his head and blinked away her memories. The tree slammed into the ground. Its massive branches knocked down the smaller trees around it. Varang stared at the destruction. When she looked at him again, he saw tears trickle down her cheeks.
"At last," she said, "they see." She grinned so widely that he felt her cheeks hurt. "Eywa did not come." The woman reached for him. She gripped the nape of his neck and pulled him down into a kiss.

Chapter 13 Excerpt: Failsafe
"The RDA decided we wanted a failsafe for if the natives ever got too hostile- for if they ever managed to push us off planet." Selfridge tapped the bio-bed. "I hand-picked soldiers on base who hate Na'vi the most. We scan them periodically with the beds," the man explained, "transfer their memories and personalities to-" he then tapped the screen next to the bed. "If things ever look like they're going south, we'll load these up and send them back to earth. They'll be uploaded into the avatars-" what, what?" "-that we're holding, and then five years later?" The man parted his hands to mimic a small explosion. "We hit Pandora with its worst nightmare- Na'vi soldiers playing for Team Humanity." That was possible? "I've been doing some thinking," Selfridge continued, "and I want to add you to the team."
"What?" Selfridge chuckled at his expression.
"Jake, we're about to hit the motherload of unobtanium thanks to you. The shareholders are gonna love it; Earth is gonna keep spinning for years. Win-win. You're the best asset I've had in years." The RDA leader smirked at him. "I'd be a god damn idiot not to do this. So, are you in?" If only the RDA had been able to make a backup of Tommy, Jake thought. He'd take his brother in any shape or form so long as he had him back. He paused at the thought. He'd never get the chance to truly save Tommy, he could only mourn what could've been. "Sully?" He wasn't going to make the same mistake twice. If there was a way to preserve what he held closest... "Hello, earth to Jake. Is this a yes or a no?"
"Do you think it could work for a Na'vi, too?" he asked. Selfridge stared at him.
"Ugh, maybe?" The man shrugged. "We've never thought about it. Why?" How could Jake spin this so the man would accept it? Because this was going to happen. Jake had already lost part of his heart. If he lost the other half of it now...
"You wanna protect your assets?" Selfridge leaned back against the bio-bed to listen. "Varang's clan is the only one that's on our side. If she died in battle and we brought her back?" Jake smiled up at the man. "They treat her like a goddess, Selfridge. We'd have Na'vi allies for life." The RDA leader rubbed his thumb over his lips as he considered it.
"You said this woman hates her own species, right?"
"She'd burn them all if she could," Jake replied.
"Well," Selfridge slowly said, "she'll get along great with our Phoenix scientists. She's on base, right?" Jake nodded. "You know what?" The RDA leader shrugged. "I'm in a good mood. Bring her in- we'll have a chat with the head scientists and see if they can whip something up." Relief made Jake sit back in his wheelchair. Selfridge hadn't said no. There was a chance. He regrouped, sat straighter, and gestured with his thumb and closed hand back at the sealed doors behind them.
"I can go get her right now." The RDA leader walked to the door and scanned his hand. When the doors opened, they both exited.
"I'll wait here," Selfridge said. Jake's rising hope let him double-time it through the crowded halls. People parted in the face of his obvious determination to keep going forward no matter what. He'd reach the bio-lab, hop into Tommy's avatar to explain things to Varang, and maybe, just maybe, he'd be able to keep the other half of his heart safe.

Chapter Thirteen Excerpt: I Still Remember
Varang's hand closed on his chin. She forced him to look up at her. "You cannot be soft! Not while your People struggle!" He glimpsed a tall man, father, speaking in hushed tones to sister.
"The other clans will not trade with us," he said. "They say we are already Unseen, that our actions have-"
"Then we take!" A young Varang's voice sounded in his ears as their lips moved, hands clenching in frustration. "Our People starve! We cannot be soft!" Father ran a hand over his face.
"Our clan is not strong enough-"
"Then make us strong!" Still father hesitated to do what was necessary! In that moment, as she looked at her sister's increasingly thin frame, she hated him. He was weak! Afraid! She would not be like him!
"You must be strong!" Varang raised her hand toward the early morning sky. "You crossed the stars! You did not die! Choose! Your people," she pointed deeper into the forest, then toward the Hometree, "or theirs!" Her ears were back, her grip on his chin tight. The man swallowed. He met her gaze.
"I still remember which team I'm playing for," he told her. She watched him. The woman finally let go. She offered him her hand and he took it.

Chapter Ten Excerpt: We Turn Our Backs
"We don't have an Eywa back on Earth," Jake told her. "We've got-" God, how to explain it... "People have a whole bunch of gods and goddesses. Some of them only have one god or goddess they believe in. Some have hundreds, thousands, even." She tilted her head, curiosity flaring through their connection. "I don't know what I believe," he confessed. "I thought, you know, maybe there was something, but..." Then Tommy had died. And any thoughts Jake had had about religion had died with him. It had been replaced by the cold certainty he'd just told her about.
"They did not answer your Peoples cries?" Her gaze went from his to the forest floor. A dawning understanding spread through their connection from her end. "Your people are strong. You," she met his gaze again, "are strong. Like us." She got up. Even offered him her hand. Jake accepted and stood as well. "I See you," she said. His heart missed a beat at the phrase. "Once we burn the Forest People, we will be strong. Our fire and yours- as one. Your People," she stretched her hand out above her, "will come from the skies. My People," Varang then reached out to take his hand, "will welcome them." She drew closer. In the dark shadows of the night, he could only see the faint light in her yellow eyes and glow of the spots on her skin. They looked like tiny stars spread out across a deep blue night sky. "Our gods did not turn their backs on us. We turn our backs on them. Together." Jake took a breath. What she was offering him, offering humanity...
"I See you," he whispered back.
   This time, he kissed her.

Chapter Ten Excerpt: First Flight
Varang had been vague about what was required. All she'd told him was that one of the beasts would try to kill him and that he'd need to join his kuru to that one. He huffed. Of fucking course it'd be the animal trying to kill him. He wondered if she'd found her nightwraith that way. Man, he couldn't imagine having to fight off that massive thing to bond with it. He was so lucky she hadn't fed him to that thing when they'd first met. Among the aggravated hisses around him, he heard a different snarl from behind. This one sounded pissed off. He turned just as a blue ikran lunged forward. He leapt out of snapping range but the animal followed him, snarling and flaring its wings. Jake risked a glance at Varang. The woman's grin told him all he needed to know. "Okay, okay."
The ikran lunged forward again. Jake crouched, letting its head go by above, before he wrapped his arm around the beast's neck and leapt onto it. The animal shrieked and twisted. God damn it! Jake scrambled to stay on the pissed creature. His heart hammered in his chest as it jumped and shook itself, trying to fling him off. The man dug his nails in and wrapped his legs around the lower part of its neck. The ikran tried to snap at him. He flinched at those sharp teeth, then his fear turned to frustration. If this god damn overgrown bird was the thing that killed Tommy-! He clenched his fist, swung his right arm back, and punched the thing right in its face. The ikran shrieked as it swayed, giving him the precious few seconds he needed to grab his kuru and ram it into the animal's. "Stop!" he shouted at it. The beast's flared wide wings immediately slumped the rock below them. "Sit still!" The ikran did as he'd commanded.
"Good," Varang said. She strode forward to their side. Jake heard a familiar howling call from down the mountain. The other ikran scattered into the wind, fleeing as Varang's mount swept up the mountain side to join them. Her huge beast settled beside them and lowered itself so that Varang count climb up onto it. "Now, we fly." Jake's ikran shuffled back as the Na'vi's ride spread its wings. Jake could feel its barely controlled terror at the sight of the nightwraith.
"It's okay," Jake murmured, trying to send reassurance through their new connection. "It's friendly." And that's how he discovered that the overgrown birds could, in fact, feel doubt. The Na'vi gave a shout as her beast took to the skies. "Come on," he urged his ikran. "Look, she's gonna be mad if we don't go." He pictured her many, many attacks on him. "You want that thing joining in? Then fly! Go!" His new ikran full body shuddered before it crouched and sprang into the air. Jake clung onto it for dear life. He felt an expectant blankness through their bond. Was it waiting for something? For him? "Follow her!" The ikran angled its wings to climb through the skies after the nightwraith. Varang twisted to look down at them. She raised a fist and gave a celebratory shout. He mirrored her. As they flew through the air, Jake following Varang's lead, everything finally felt right. This? He grinned at the wind in his hair and the sky above them. He'd been born to do this.

Chapter Nine Excerpt: You Defy Her Laws
Jake pressed his hands to the ceiling and pushed it up. He squinted as his eyes readjusted to the light. The man pushed himself up. Varang leaned down into his personal space and- Uh. Wow. She was tall. Way taller than he'd expected. Jake had known that the Na'vi towered over humans, but knowing it and experiencing it firsthand was... Well. Wow. He forced a smile. The woman leaned even closer. Her huge eyes felt like they were taking in every pore on his face.
"Hey, Varang." Jake greeted her. She finally drew back to give him some space when he grabbed his legs and hauled them over the edge of the machine. He maneuvered himself down into his wheelchair. He turned his wheels so he could face her. She spoke in Na'vi as she touched him. Her fingers traced his ears, his nose, then his eyebrows. Jake stayed still as she ran her hand through his hair and then- Varang crouched. She touched his right wheel and rolled it forward. Jake let himself go with the motion. When she let go, he wheeled past her and did a small circle around the room to show her what his movement looked like. She watched him with those wide eyes. "So, yeah. This is me. And you can't understand a word I'm saying, can you?" The woman cocked her head at him. Yeah, that was a no.
Jake wheeled himself back to the side of the machine. He locked his wheels and pulled himself up into the squishy science bed. The man took a moment to readjust his legs into the right positions before he glanced in Varang's direction. She didn't look pitying or frustrated. That was already better than most of the reactions he got from strangers back on Earth. Jake leaned back into the bed. He reached up, pulled the top of the device down into place, and shut his eyes. It took a couple of seconds for him to quiet his mind enough to return to Tommy's avatar. When he opened his eyes, Varang moved to his side. She connected their braids and- He was a little better prepared for her fourth kiss. Less for the emotional heat he received from her as she moved to straddle him. His back hit the machine. She kept him pinned there with her weight as she put her hands to his cheeks.
"Your existence..." Varang began. She stopped. Her pupils were wide, the yellow rings of her eyes going thin.  "Every breath you take defies Her Laws. You..." She wrapped her arms around his shoulders and pulled him to her. Her fingers curled tight in the fabric of his worn shirt. Jake hesitantly hugged her back. "You are everything I have ever wanted."

Chapter Six Excerpt: Introductions
He closed his eyes as the darkness descended-
And opened them to the dark animal skins stretched across the ceiling of the Na'vi woman's yurt. He took a moment to push the feeling of disorientation down before he looked around. The woman had laid him out on a woven mat. His jacket was missing. The woman stood before a fire in the center of the yurt. She rubbed her fingers along the fabric of his jacket, her ears up as her tail flicked against the ashen ground.
"Hi?" She dropped his jacket and spun at the sound of his voice. "Hey." Jake gave a small wave. "I'm back." She spoke more Na'vi words at him as he got up. "Look, I'm sorry, but I really can't understand you. I'm Jake." He tapped the avatar's chest. "Jake Sully." Tommy, he really wanted to say, because this was Tommy, was his face and voice, but he knew he didn't have the words to make her understand his unique situation.
"Jakesully," the woman spoke his name like it was strange.
"No, it's-" You know what, he wasn't going to argue with the person who had saved him. "Yeah. Sure. Jakesully. And what're you called?" She gave him a blank look. "Me," he pointed to himself, "Jakesully. You?" He gestured to her. Understanding gleamed in her yellow eyes.
   "Varang." No last name?
"Varang," he repeated. "Jake. Varang." At least they knew each other's names now. That was something. "Thanks, by the way. I don't know how much longer I was gonna last out there." The woman gave him another blank look. "Thank you." How did Na'vi express gratitude? He'd have to ask Norm when he got back.
I See The Fire In You
Relationships: Spider & Recom Quaritch, Spider & Varang
Pairings: Recom Quaritch x Varang
Chapter One
At Quaritch's words, Spider turned in confusion. Why would he say-? The Sky Person Na'vi let himself drop backward, pushing off the floating rock to fall out of their reach. Spider's breath caught in his throat as he grasped for large blue hands. It wouldn't do any good, he wasn't strong enough to hold up a fully grown Na'vi, but his fingers closed on empty air. No! The boy crouched. With the sound of Jake and Neytiri's frantic shouts in his ears, Spider pushed off the rock and extended his hands out before him. He saw Quaritch's eyes widen as the boy hurtled down after him. Again, the man reached for him. Their fingers brushed, then locked together, and the Na'vi yanked him down into a strong embrace.
"Are you stupid, son?" Quaritch yelled at him with bared fangs and flattened back ears. "You-!" Spider wrapped his legs around the man's waist. The Sky Person's yellow eyes darted about to passing clumps of floating land. When Quaritch pulled at him, trying to lift him with the clear intent of tossing him onto the land clumps they passed, Spider snarled and shoved at the man's hands. He held his arms and legs rigid and tight around the man. "You're gonna die if you don't let me toss you, kid!"
"We won't die!" Spider had faith in that. Eywa would save them! Not for Quaritch's sake, but for Spider's! She would provide him a way to live- Spider just had to drag the Sky Person along with him. The swirling air around them cleared. The ocean below burned with Sky People machines. The waters were bloated with fire and the floating forms of wounded Tulkun. Spider swallowed at how quickly the waves approached. He shut his eyes and buried his face in Quaritch's chest. "Eywa," he whispered, "see me, hear me! Save us! Save-!"
He felt something scaly wrap around his back. The sudden change from falling to moving forward left him gasping. He opened his eyes and turned his head to look up at Neytiri and her Ikran- That wasn't Neytiri! The fire witch grinned down at them. Quaritch reached up to grip the nightwraith's leg. He kept his other arm tight around Spider's back. The witch bared her teeth in an expression that was fury and defiance.
"Your life is not Eywa's to claim!" she shouted down at them. Quaritch laughed as if the crazy woman had said something funny. Spider clung to the Sky Person for entirely different reasons now. The woman guided her nightwraith down to the next larger floating rock. It was right above the flaming water. They landed and her beast dropped them to the ground. Spider grunted at the small impact. He rolled free from the Sky Person Na'vi and quickly got to his feet. He crouched, wishing he had his knife. Quaritch pushed himself up, dusted himself off, and then walked to the edge of the land mass. He looked down at the water.
"We didn't get them," he said, "but we struck a blow against their forces. They've seen our might now. And... thanks."
"Our fire still burns," the woman agreed as she smoothly slid off her nightwraith. Quaritch nodded like the witch was talking anything that made sense.
"We need to regroup. Your people will help mine make it to land. I'll have your riders search the waves for survivors. There's something more important I need you to do." The woman cocked her head at him. "My son. Take him back to your home and make sure no Sky Person sees him. I'm trusting you with him." Quaritch rested his hand on Spider's shoulder. Wait, what? "No son of mine is gonna be some science puke's newest frog to dissect."
The witch turned her yellow gaze on his. He held his shoulders rigid so he wouldn't shiver like he wanted to. Him? Be alone? With her? She'd held her weapon to his throat! But she wasn't the most recent Na'vi to do that, was she? He shook his head to push away that thought. Spider looked uncertainly up at Quaritch. Was the man really going to send him away with her? Quaritch saw his look and smiled.
"You're tough, kid. She'll like that."
"She's crazy!" The Sky Person Na'vi laughed.
   "They're all crazy, Spider."
"I could wait here," Spider began to reason. "The Sullys will come. You live. I live. I like that idea." Quaritch turned to eye him. Those blue ears went back and forth before the man squated down to be eye level with him.
"We're at war, son." And whose fault was that? The Sky People should've never come back. "You've got to start thinking strategically." What did Quaritch mean by that? "You're smart as a whip. I know you are. Now think. The military wants to crush those Na'vi. The suits wanna stick you under a microscope. They both get what they want if you stay with Sully. Now, what if you vanished?" Spider dropped his gaze from Quaritch's. He tried to see the picture the Sky Person Na'vi was making.
"They'd look for me," Spider said.
   "And?" Quaritch asked.
"They... They won't find me with the Sullys." The Sky Person Na'vi nodded for him to continue. "Which means they'll have to look in different places for me? Like how you looked for Jake?"
"And you'll be where they'd never expect." Quaritch gestured to the crazy woman. "Safe with my allies. My equal." The woman's ears flicked up at that. "Now, will you go with Varang?" Spider eyed the Na'vi witch with no small amount of suspicion. How had she gone from wanting to roast them in a fire to standing at Quaritch's side? He didn't trust her. But... he did trust Quaritch. Kind of. It was really hard to doubt a man who'd immediately jumped from such a high place to catch him.
"Fine. But I can change my mind if I want to! And you won't stop me!"
"Son," Quaritch laughed, "you wiggled your way out of an RDA cage. I couldn't stop you for long even if I tried." Spider let himself relax a little bit at that. If Quaritch was lying, then he'd just escape again. He was getting good at that. The man gave him one last smile before turning and diving into the waves below.
"Come, son of Quaritch." The woman, Varang, ordered. She mounted her nightwraith and extended her hand toward him. Spider glanced down at the waves. If he jumped he was sure she'd pluck him from the water like a bird would a fish. He took a breath, still feeling amazing that he could do that, and turned toward her. The woman pulled him up onto her nightwraith. She settled him before her and then urged the winged beast skyward.
This was fine, he told himself. It was okay. Quaritch was still alive. Jake, Neytiri, and his brother and sisters were still alive. He'd have time to wonder about the weirdest thing of today. Na'vi working with the Sky People? These Na'vi had been tricked somehow. The humans had poisoned them against Eywa and their own people. Maybe if he could figure out what had gone wrong, he could help them. Spider closed his eyes at the harsh wind around them. The Na'vi witch smelled of smoke. He could feel her eyes on him. That was okay, he told himself. Everything was okay.

Chapter Four Scene: Their Different First Meeting
He froze at the rustle of something across the grass. Something had snuck up on him. He shuddered and tightened his grip on his spear. If it was the panther, he was dead. Jake turned and found himself looking down the burning point of an arrowhead instead. The man sucked a startled breath in. His eyes went from the arrow to the Na'vi woman aiming it at him. She looked so different from every other Na'vi he'd seen. Her skin was paler than the avatars back at base. The pictures he'd seen of the natives always showed them wearing yellow, green, and blue paint, not this stark red. He met her gaze. She spoke Na'vi at him, her words sharp and curious.
"Um. Okay." Jake swallowed. "Please don't shoot me?" The woman gave no indication that she'd understood his words. She stepped closer instead. The tip of the arrow hovered right before his eyes. The flame flickering there was warm, almost like the heat of the flames engulfing Tommy, as as he blinked and shook his head, looked into yellow eyes and watched as the orange, purple, and blue flames mixed. Every breath he took was warm. Something in him relaxed, sank down into the remembered realization that Tommy wasn't there anymore. That he'd never get to talk to his brother again. Movement pulled his eyes from the small flame. The woman cocked her head at him. Her long braid swayed with the motion. He stared at the flame reflected in her eyes. She said something again in Na'vi.
"I-" Hearing Tommy's voice made him shudder. "I don't understand you." Tommy would've. His twin would've probably been happily chatting this woman's ears off if he'd gotten the chance. If that dirtbag hadn't shot him. The woman looked from him, to her flaming arrow, and back again. She unstrung it from her bow and snuffed the fire out with a downward flick of the arrow.
Looking back on this part makes me wonder- do we think there are buyers of this book who couldn't read this letter? When I went through college a decade back, the professor's assistant and half of my fellow classmates in an English class couldn't read or write cursive. They had never been taught how to and it never really came up in their daily lives. So, if a reader doesn't know cursive and doesn't have anyone else around them who knows it either, would this part just be mostly indecipherable?
